Using Style of Participation among Texas Inshore Fishing Guides to Understand Displacement Behavior due to Perceived Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) Population Declines

Characterization of distinct angler fishing styles (e.g., how, where, and with what) allows resource managers the ability to predict how perceived impacts or modifications to fisheries resources (i.e., decline of fish species population) may impact different user groups. Recreation specialization provides a useful framework for understanding participation diversity among recreationists in terms of unique styles of participation. Bryan suggested that within an activity distinct types of participants exist that demonstrate characteristic styles of participation. Fundamental to Bryan's development of specialization were contextual attributes that characterize participant engagement in a recreation activity. However, advancement in specialization has been accompanied by a departure from Bryan's original conceptualization describing activity context. I revisited how specialization is operationalized and developed a contextual style of participation typology and self-classification measure to investigate displacement and substitution behavior among Texas inshore fishing guides. Data were collected in two separate phases. In 2010, I conducted an exploratory investigation that included eighteen face-to-face, in-depth interviews with key informants spanning the entire coast. In 2011, I conducted a quantitative investigation that included mailing a 12 page self-administered survey to all Texas Parks and Wildlife licensed saltwater fishing guides (n=909). Thematic analysis drawing on grounded theory revealed that the salience of six contextual attributes (i.e., bait type, tackle type, fishing method, casting tactic, water depth, and fish species) that characterized four distinct styles of participation (e.g., Bait, All-purpose, Lure, and Sight-casting Guides). A unidimensional self-classification measure was developed based on my guide typology and discriminant analysis revealed it performed as well as a multidimensional measure of specialization. Ultimately, analysis of variance revealed significant differences existed among self-classification categories with respect to substitution behavior (e.g., targeting alternative species of fish, fishing in another location, and using alternative fishing methods or bait types) due to perceived spotted seatrout declines during 2010. In short, my findings suggest that anglers respond differently due to perceived spotted seatrout declines based on their preferred contextual style of participation. A contextual approach to understanding style of participation provides fisheries managers an effective method for understanding and mitigating social and ecological issues.

The propagation characteristics of a new coupled fin line structure, with asymetrical, rectangular, top and bottom housings, is evaluated by using the modal analysis technique. The boundary Green's function of the structure, relating the surface currents to the electric fields is derived by using this technique. The propagation characteristics, i.e. propagation constant and impedances, of the structure are determined by implementing Galerkin's procedure and the results are presented for a wide range of possible structure dimensions. A CAD compatible, quasistatic analysis based on conformal mapping of the rectangular housing structure and known coplanar waveguide results is also presented. The results of the quasistatic analysis are shown to be in good agreement with the fullwave simulation at low frequencies. / Graduation date: 1993

This comparative study of Girl Guiding in Malaya, India, Nigeria, and Australia examines the dynamics of engagement between Western and non-Western women participants. Originally a program to promote feminine citizenship only to British girls, Guiding became tied up with efforts to maintain, transform, or build different kinds of imagined communities—imperial states, nationalists movements, and independent nation states. From the program’s origins in London in 1909 until 1960 the relationship of the metropole and colonies resembled a complex web of influence, adaptation, and agency. The interactions between Girl Guide officialdom headquartered in London, Guide leaders of colonized girls, and the colonized girls who joined suggest that the foundational ideology of Guiding, maternalism, became a common language that participants used to work toward different ideas and practices of civic belonging initially as members of the British Empire and later as members of independent nations.

Development of youth leadership life skills of Texas youth as San Antonio Livestock Exposition school tour guides

Many youth organizations, including 4-H, FFA, and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), offer countless opportunities for their members to learn and further develop leadership life skills that are important in becoming contributing members of society as adults. The purpose of this study was to determine if Texas 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA members were developing leadership life skills as school tour guides at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. Additionally, demographic characteristics were evaluated to determine which of these characteristics affected leadership life skills development. Demographic characteristics evaluated included gender, age, ethnicity, youth organization membership, years of membership, years of experience as a school tour guide, and previous leadership skills training. The target population was Texas 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA members who served as school tour guides at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. School tour guides referred to the 4-H, FFA, FCCLA members who imparted their personal knowledge of agriculture to elementary-aged students from San Antonio and surrounding area schools that requested an educational tour at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. There were 1,691 school tour guides on the days of February 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, and 18, 2004. All school tour guides returning for the afternoon exit-meeting during the 2004 San Antonio Livestock Exposition were asked to complete the questionnaire. The questionnaire was a 28-item survey instrument that was based on the scales: Working with Groups, Understanding Self, Communicating, Making Decisions, and Leadership. Conclusions showed school tour guides had developed leadership life skills. The most influential demographic characteristics were gender, previous leadership experiences, and ethnicity. Females and those participants who had had previous leadership experiences had stronger perceptions of their leadership life skills. In addition, African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics, and Anglos all had stronger perceptions of their leadership life skills when compared to Native Americans. As a result of this study, the researcher recommends that youth should be encouraged to participate as school tour guides at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. School tour guides had developed leadership life skills. In addition, youth should also be encouraged to participate in other leadership-development activities through other programs to further develop and enhance their leadership life skills.
