Supporting Students Where They Are When They Need It: Scaling Instruction at the University of Arizona LibrariesKline, Elizabeth, Sult, Leslie 24 April 2012 (has links)
Poster presentation from the Living the Future 8 Conference, April 23-24, 2012, University of Arizona Libraries, Tucson, AZ. / Continuing on the University of Arizona Libraries' long history of leveraging technology to support students in attaining information fluency, this poster will highlight two approaches for supporting students where and when they need assistance. We will discuss how the Libraries selected, developed, and refined a scalable and interactive online approach to database instruction and suggest an approach other libraries can adopt to make pedagogically sound database tutorials. We will also share a local tool designed to push course-appropriate library content and services to all courses using a course management system and our plans for modifying the tool so that faculty and librarians can work together to efficiently and easily create customized, integrated course guides.

Writing for Educators Instead of Grade LevelsFey, Cass 24 April 2012 (has links)
Poster presentation from the Living the Future 8 Conference, April 23-24, 2012, University of Arizona Libraries, Tucson, AZ. / This session will focus on successful educators' guides written to encourage and facilitate interdisciplinary use of collections by K-12 and university faculty. This tactic for relating collections to classroom study bypasses the time-consuming methodology of writing for specific grade levels. The Curator of Education at the Center for Creative Photography will discuss her approach to writing for the educated individual to assess and present collection subject matter and interpretation strategies to students at various grade levels and across curricula. It will include samples of collection descriptions, discussion questions, and methods for interpreting photographs.

Jaunųjų gidų tautinės savimonės ugdymas neformaliojo švietimo dailės užsiėmimuose / National self-consciousness upbringing of junior guides in the classes of informal educationGrivačiauskaitė, Airida 25 May 2005 (has links)
After gaining independence in Lithuania (1990), the problem of retaining national individuality still remains a point at issue.
National self-consciousness is a distinctive aspect of social self-consciousness. It is related to national identity - an individual being with the same ethnic community, considering it his/her nation. In the view of structure, national sel-consciousness acts as the unit of three components - cognitive, emotional and controlling. Development of Lithuanian national self-consciousness is related to its upbringing. Especially favourable conditions for upbringing national self – consciousness are at the teen-age, by consolidating and defining national identity of a person. Historically, in order to form, strengthen and consolidate mature national self-consciousness, attention to the national language, culture and education was paid. Possibilities of upbringing national self-consciousness are pointed out in the contemporary educational documents as well.
National self-consciousness upbringing of junior guides by means of art works on national topics, is a scientific problem at issue. A guide is a person, that presents country, region, city, all the national history and cultural objects to tourists. Informal activity plays especially great role in upbringing self-consciousness of junior guides. Presumptions for national self-consciousness upbringing are laid in the art classes, by integrating principals of tourism and regional studies, stimulating... [to full text]

Curricular needs of immigrant women in orientational training programsChen, Lin 11 1900 (has links)
In training programs designed to help immigrant women adapt to Canada, drop-out
rates are frequently high and attendance is often low. Investigating some reasons behind this
observation was the motivation for this thesis. A literature review revealed that curricula used
in existing programs are often developed from experts' understanding of immigrants' needs;
research on immigrant women's curricular needs as perceived by themselves is virtually nonexistent.
An objective of this thesis was to address this knowledge gap.
This study inquired into what curricular needs immigrant women have, how these needs
differ, and what relationship exists between the women's backgrounds and their curricular
needs. A questionnaire was developed and validated by an expert panel, and then administered
to graduates from an orientational training program. Post-survey interviews were conducted.
Data were analyzed using frequency distribution, cluster analysis, multivariate analysis of
variance (MANOVA), factor analysis, and linear discriminant analysis.
It was found that the program, although well received, did not reflect the curricular
needs perceived by the immigrant women themselves. Life skills instruction was unwanted by
many students while English and computer lessons were in demand. A desire to regain higherquality
jobs partially explained the women's curricular needs.

Cauchy interpolation for multi-variate and multi-derivative dataKaufman, Jonathan, 1981- January 2007 (has links)
There is often a need to interpolate data that is obtained through experiment or computational analysis, because the data is difficult or expensive to obtain. An example is the scattering parameters of microwave devices, obtained through computationally intensive finite element (FE) analysis. Cauchy interpolation is an established solution to this problem. In this thesis it is extended to interpolate data over a multi-parameter space, when the data available includes not just the function to be interpolated, but also its derivatives with respect to each parameter. The finite element method (FEM) provides such derivatives. The new algorithm is applied to a simple RLC circuit test case, and to real data from a 3D FE analysis of a rectangular waveguide component, in a 4-parameter space. Results show the effectiveness of the approach taken.
