Resiliency revised: Remediation and recreation in New Orleans water systems

January 2016 (has links)
In environmental terms, New Orleans is a city that should not exist. With the Mississippi River eager to escape its engineered confinement, the topography of the city sinking slowly due to subsidence, and the steady rise of sea level partnered with wetland and coastal erosion, the future of New Orleans is wet and it is fast approaching. Initial settlers built on the naturally elevated sediment deposits of the Mississippi River, but over time and as the city grew, swamps were drained and occupation spread into lower, more saturated ground. For over two hundred years, humans have interfered with water's natural authority over this area. We have contained, diverted, drained, and regulated rivers, lakes, and swamps to maintain a constructed version of the ground plane that subverts natural processes to the regions' detriment. Plans for the future of New Orleans have been debated since Hurricane Katrina served as an expose to our synthesized and extremely fragile system. From the Dutch Dialogues, a comprehensive u an redevelopment plan, to smaller scale water management studies such as the Mirabeau Water Gardens, the drawing board has rarely been empty. Proposals have met resistance from the community, and ten years after the disaster, no coherent plan has been outlined. New Orleans isn't the only city searching for answers; delta and coastal cities the world over are recognizing the need to rethink resiliency and sustainability in light of global environmental changes. This project proposes neighborhood-scale interventions that bring previously concealed water processes to light by exhibiting them in a sustainable community-centered resource. Rather than altering existing infrastructure, this strategy would utilize current neutral ground conditions in order to take pressure off the City's drainage network. By accepting and accommodating water within the urban fabric, New Orleans can address the deficiencies in defensive water infrastructure to define a new resilience. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu

Common Crowd Dynamics: Shaping Behavioral Intention Models

Bouchard, Marcel 01 December 2011 (has links)
As the human population grows, so too does the need to understand human behavior. One particularly important aspect of human behavior is how it changes within conglomerations of people, i.e. crowds. In this thesis, a method for modeling crowd behavior is proposed. This method draws inspiration from the concept of behavioral intention and the related forces of attitudes, influences, and social norms. These topics are first defined and detailed, followed by a survey of related research. Next, the model is presented and adapted to three common crowd dynamics, each stressing a different component of behavioral intention. Observations are made about these models, and extensions to the models and directions for future research are considered.

Measuring Influence Across Social Media Platforms: Empirical Analysis Using Symbolic Transfer Entropy

Bhattacharjee, Abhishek 21 June 2019 (has links)
Social media platforms are interconnected environments that influence each other. Information from one social media platform spreads to another. This thesis proposes a platform-independent framework to analyze information transfer across social media platforms. This thesis uses Symbolic Transfer Entropy and Statistical Significance Test to measure influence and optimize the time window of influence between different platforms. To validate the framework, the thesis analyses the temporal activity dynamics and the information transfer across three different platforms, Reddit, Twitter and GitHub. Two data driven studies are described in this thesis. The first study finds the optimum time windows of influence between the three platforms during two different cyber attack events on cryptocurrency exchanges. It finds that specific types of activities are more influential than others, and optimum time interval changes with pre, during, and post event days. The second study applies information revealed in the first study and specifically the optimal time window to link cross-platform information cascades from Twitter and Reddit. The case-study is a heuristic that, we show, can reduce the search space for connecting information cascades across different platforms.

The influence of antiretroviral medication on the lives of children in Botswana

Mmatli, Esther Loratang 15 August 2011 (has links)
This study sought to appreciate the influence of antiretroviral medications on the daily lives of children in Botswana. The aim of the study was to explore and gain in-depth understanding of the influence that antiretroviral medications have on the children’s lives. The study focused on children receiving services from the Bamalete Lutheran Hospital in Ramotswa, Botswana. It is important to give children an opportunity to have their voices heard as not doing so might present missed opportunities for the various care and support services providers. The study was qualitative as it sought to come closer to the individual children and get their own personal perspective of the influence of medication on their lives. The phenomenological strategy was applied to derive the description from each participant. Although the study was mainly applied as hoping to add a dimension of the meaning of antiretroviral medication from the children’s perspective which would facilitate improvements on service delivery; it can also be seen to contribute toward the body of knowledge as there are limited literature resources in this area. The sampling method used in this study was purposive in order to ensure a variety of responses and an enriched understanding of how the participants perceived the influence of these medications. A few broad areas of discussion were developed to facilitate the one-to-one unstructured interview. The conclusion from this study is that children do have stories to share in terms of how they perceive the influence of antiretroviral medications in their lives. These stories need to be explored and understood to facilitate better targeted care and support services for them. The stories from the sixteen children interviewed in this study are herein reported as well as the conclusions and recommendations that followed them. The general theme from listening to the stories of the children is that children understand that they have to take the medications and that it helps to improve their health. / Dissertation (MSW)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Social Work and Criminology / unrestricted

A Study of the Selection of U.S. Foreign News by Three French Foreign News Editors

Norman, Elizabeth 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was an analysis of the selection of news by newspaper editors in another culture. The purposes of this study were: 1. To examine the news perceptions of three French foreign news editors. 2. To discover if social forces influence the selection of news. 3. To discover if personal attitudes of a foreign news editor affects his selection of U.S. news. 4. To learn whether the institution that employs the foreign news editor affects his selection of U.S. news. 5. To find out if the societal influence to maintain cultural consensus affects selection of U.S. news by a French foreign news editor. 6. To discover if there is a relationship between the number of news items received in a category and the selection of news items from the same category. To carry out the purposes of this study, answers were sought to the following questions: 1. Do values of the French culture affect the selection of U.S. news items? 2. Do the three French news editors have to adjust their selection of U.S. news? 3. Do the attitudes of the French editors affect their selection of U.S. news? 4. Do the publication production problems affect the selection of U.S. news by the French editors? 5. Does the content of the wire affect the selection of U.S. news; that is, will there be a relationship between the number of items received in a category of news and the selection of news items from the same category.

A review of environmental news reporting in South Africa: case studies on climate change and energy, fracking, and acid mine drainage

Suliman, Lutfiyah January 2018 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, Johannesburg, 2018 / Environmental communication in media has been studied largely in American and European contexts, since the 1990s. These studies have revealed the trends in reporting on the greatest environmental threats of our time, and the predominant framing of environmental risks, most notably those posed by climate change. Despite the crucial role that media plays in developing environmental narratives, few studies on environmental media reporting in developing nations, especially African nations, have been conducted. This research thus evaluates the media role in communicating environmental issues and environmental science in the South African media context. By conducting coverage and content analysis on three environmental issues at the core of the industrial development that underpins the South African economy: acid- mine drainage, fracking and climate change and energy, in five commercial newspapers, it is shown that South African media coverage of environmental issues is still limited by demographic factors which influence the news agenda of publications; that social framing of environmental news is important to environmental journalists and raising the environmental agenda in the newsroom; and government voices speak loudest on these important environmental issues / MT 2019
