Integrated river sustainability assessment : case studies of the Yellow River and the Ganges

Wu, Huijuan January 2014 (has links)
This thesis develops and validates a comprehensive methodology for measuring sustainability of a large river basin by using a tailored indicator set. The concept of river sustainability concerns not only the ecological condition of the river course, but also socioeconomic activities in the river basin. River sustainability is defined from five perspectives: sufficient resource, resilience to water-related risks, access to water supply and other services, productive use of water, and fairness between different users and generations. The Process Analysis Method (PAM) is employed as the guideline for developing sustainability assessment framework. As a participatory approach, PAM engages stakeholders to identify emerging issues and impacts on sustainability. Through a systematic process, a tailored indicator set is selected and categorized under three domains, namely, environmental performance, social wellbeing, and economic development. Two case studies have been undertaken, examining the underlying sustainability of the Lower Yellow River basin (LYR) and Upper Ganges River basin (UGR). Extensive fieldwork was carried out in China and India, in order to conduct stakeholder interviews and to collect multivariate data. 18 indicators are selected for LYR and 12 for UGR. The LYR assessment is conducted over the period from 1950 to 2010, whilst UGR features a 10-year period from 2001 to 2010. By processing raw hydrological data and socio-economic statistics, a normalized score is calculated for each indicator in a given year, the value ranging between 0 and 1, where 0 represents poor performance and 1 refers to a fully sustainable status. The results show that, although social wellbeing and economic status for LYR have progressively improved since 1950, environmental quality declined in the latter half of 20th century, with the lowest point in 1997 when extreme drought occurred. The Yellow River Conservancy Commission (YRCC), the government authority responsible for the LYR, implemented measures to improve the river health by multifunctional infrastructure projects and water allocation regulation. This effort proved to be effective as the general sustainability performance subsequently improved. The UGR study also identifies the trade-off between environmental capital and socioeconomic capital. With vast expansion of hydropower projects and new settlement in flood-prone areas, communities along the UGR are increasingly vulnerable to extreme events. However, the Ganges river basin authority lacks the capacity for integrated planning which would enable projects like flood defence schemes to be undertaken in a proper framework. It is likely that the environmental performance of the UGR will continue to decline, particularly with increasing uncertainty in climate, as the UGR basin management is not improving resilience sufficiently. By performing this comparative analysis, it has been shown that integrated river basin management should incorporate institutional capacity, stakeholder engagement, resilience and transparency. This research also contributes to underpinning policies for Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM). The assessment provides policy-makers and river managers with a holistic view of the river basin; the framework can be used to track progress towards sustainable development and identify priorities for multi-criteria decision-making.

Vybrané pedagogické aspekty řízení lidských zdrojů / Selected educational aspects of human resources management

PRENER, Zdeněk January 2010 (has links)
The thesis describes and evaluates selected eduacational aspects of human resources management. It introduces some recent conceptions of specialization and evolution from personnel administration through personnel management to human resources management as the unity of emloyee development and utilization of their potential to achieve organization`s objectives according to their needs. It outlines the structure of human resources management (recruitment, performance management, evaluation {\dots}) and compares the aplication of principles of specialization in the work of a human resources manager and a line manager. Subsequently, several determinants of educational processes within human resource management are pointed out in connection with human factors (personality, health, human relations) and job performance (work, free time, work environment). Furthermore, educational dimension of human resources management is evaluated. In the final part Possible prognosis and future expectations are included. Namely, the worth of information for functioning of organizations and comparing the modern roles of technology with the role of humanity in the modern world.

Strategické řízení lidských zdrojů v mateřských školách a v mateřských školách s odloučenými pracovišti / Strategic Human Resource Management in kindergartens and nursery schools separated work

Mysíková, Šárka January 2017 (has links)
The present diploma thesis is focused on description and comparison of strategic management of human resources in kindergarten and kindergarten with remoted institutions in Carlsbad Region. The theoretical part introduce the fundamental terms connected with the strategic management of human resources from different perspectives, and the methods of strategic management of human resources in school institution. The empirical research reveals and compares the strategic management of human resources in kindergarten and kindergarten with remoted institutions. Further, the empirical research of strategic management is focused on the size of kindergarten in terms of number of classes. Two research methods were chosen: questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The semi-structured interviews were added due to obtaining of more specified and detailed information concerning given topic. Based on the results, it may be stated that the management of kindergarten and kindergarten with remoted institutions is strategic as regards human resources. However, the management differs one from another. The most important condition, affecting the strategic management of human resources, is the number of classes in the kindergartens.

Integrating enterprise resource planning into electronic content management in a South African water utility company

Mello, Vincent Malesela 12 1900 (has links)
Bibliography: pages 184-207 / Digital records are either stored in an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system or electronic content management (ECM), or managed without the benefit of either system. In many countries, public and private organisations have implemented ECM systems, some have implemented ERP systems and others generate digital records without the benefit of any controlled system. In most organisations such systems are not integrated resulting in duplication and fragmentation of records. The South African Water Utility company, Rand Water, has implemented both ERP and ECM systems. Investing in these systems as an organisation comes at a cost but it can add value when used optimally to improve the organisation’s productivity and efficiency. To achieve high productivity and efficiency, integration of an ERP system into an ECM system is a requirement but remains lacking. This qualitative study utilised the Actor Network Theory to explore the integration of ERP into ECM at the South African Water Utility company, Rand Water, with a view to developing a framework for integration of the systems. The study utilised a system analysis case design with fourteen interviews conducted at different levels in the organisation and diverse business units using ERP and ECM to perform their operational deliverables in line with the organisation’s business objectives. The interviews were augmented with data from document analysis of policies, specifications and functionalities of the systems to determine the feasibility of integration. The study established that the water utility company has implemented ERP systems (SAP) since 1994 and ECM system since 1991 (Papertrail and later IBM FileNet) with only information flow module integrated. The study suggested that to integrate ERP into ECM, human and non-human actors need to collaborate to ensure that the actor network being integrated is achieved. The study also presents a strategy discussion for integrating ERP into ECM. A further study on the transfer of digital records in ECM into archival custody is recommended. / Information Science / D. Nástroj pro správu dokumentů v managementu projektů / Electronic Document Management in Project Management Tool

Gavryliuk, Olga January 2019 (has links)
This work deals with electronic document management systems (EDMS) from the perspective of selected knowledge areas of project management processes. The aim of this thesis was to create an EDM system based on an appropriately selected EDM model, which would assist in the management of documents that arise during management processes in selected areas of project management (quality, human resources and communication within the project) with the possibility of extending to other knowledge areas.
