Nishida, Koji 01 August 2010 (has links)
I have investigated the theme of imposters in three Hispanic American plays and two Caribbean plays from the early twentieth century; I selected each play from a different country so that I can present a broader perspective of Hispanic American and Caribbean themes. In these five plays, the main characters fabricate their own identities for various reasons. My focus is on analyzing those imposters and on presenting how the dramatists present this type of imposters in their works. Identity is one of the most prominent themes in Hispanic American and Caribbean literature because the history of these regions involves a long period of European colonization. As a result of this colonization the cultures of these regions imitated European culture for centuries. For this reason the act of constructing a distinct American identity has been a struggle for Hispanic American and Caribbean writers. The five plays analyze this struggle by depicting main characters who pretend to be someone else and abandon their own identity. I have analyzed the imposters and incorporated findings from various studies that make a connection between the play and Hispanic American and Caribbean history. My goal is to demonstrate the historical circumstances that provoke the characters into falsifying their own identities. In the final chapter I will perform a contrastive analysis of the five plays and focus on their similarities and differences. Each of the five plays demonstrates a different circumstance, and the characters fabricate their own identities for a different reason. However, all five cases produce a negative consequence in the play or give the readers a negative impression of imposters.

Diálogos contemporâneos com Eça de Queiroz e Fradique Mendes /

Bressan, Inês Cardin. January 2013 (has links)
Abstract: This thesis is a study about the resumption of the character Fradique Mendes de Eça de Queiroz in some contemporary works. Three among them were selected, which have intertextual connections with the work A Correspondência de Fradique Mendes (The Correspondence of Fradique Mendes), as well as its main character. They are: O Enigma das Cartas Inéditas de Eça de Queiroz (The Riddle of the Eça de Queiroz Unpublished Letters), (Marcos, 1996), whose narrative tries to elucidate the authorship of some Eça‟s letters, mixed with characteristics of detective novel; Os Esquemas de Fradique (The Schemes of Fradique) (Venâncio, 1999), which is a constant search to reveal the existence of two offsprings of Carlos Fradique Mendes from the point of view of a narrator journalist; and Autobiografia de Carlos Fradique Mendes (Autobiography of Carlos Fradique Mendes) (Fernandes, 2002), which brought to life Carlos Fradique Mendes by a resurrection elixir. The personal motivations for the development of this research are found into the inexistence of more vertical studies about the last phase of Eça de Queiroz, called The Last Eça, and the extensive revisitations of his work more than a hundred years after his death. Yet, the character of Carlos Fradique Mendes have repeatedly appeared in some Universities‟ syllabus, turning the creation of Eça de Queiroz time proof. Encapsulated in three chapters, the theories over intertextuality were developed in the first one, from its beginning to current time, including notions over the creation of characters. Therefore, studies of Bakhtin, Kristeva, Jenny, Genette, Hutcheon among others were used as theoric platform. The second chapter was centered into the phase called The Last Eça and introduced an outlook of this writer‟s path, specifically in a time when he published on the newspapers what later will be called The Correspondence of Fradique Mendes.
