Helen Hyde and Her "Children": Influences, Techniques and Business Savvy of an American Japoniste PrintmakerJanuary 2016 (has links)
abstract: After the opening of Japan in the mid-1800s many foreigners flocked to the
nation. San Franciscan Helen Hyde (1868-1919) joined the throng in 1899. Unlike many
of her predecessors, however, she went as a single woman and was so taken with Japan
she made it her home over the span of fourteen years. While a number of cursory studies
have been written on Helen Hyde and her work, a wide range of questions have been left
unanswered. Issues regarding her specific training, her printmaking techniques and the
marketing of her art have been touched on, but never delved into. This dissertation will
explore those issues. Helen Hyde's success as a printmaker stemmed from her intense
artistic training, experimental techniques, artistic and social connections and diligence in
self-promotion and marketing as well as a Western audience hungry for "Old Japan," and
its imagined quaintness. Hyde's choice to live and work in Japan gave her access to
models and firsthand subject matter which helped her audience feel like they were getting
a slice of Japan, translated for them by a Western artist. This dissertation provides an in
depth bibliography including hundreds of primary newspaper articles about Hyde who
was lauded for her unique style. It also expands and corrects the listing of her printed
works and examines the working style of an American working in a Japanese system with
Japanese subjects for a primarily American audience. It also provides a listing of known
exhibitions of Hyde's works and a listing of stamps and markings she used on her prints. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Art History 2016

This research project investigates my print series Brumas produced between 2009 and 2011. Based on the relationships between photography and printmaking, it investigates how procedures of marking surfaces and transferring images also involve conceptual issues for production. The relationships between these languages are addressed through the way in which they instigate the presence of an other. The common thread of these works is the use of landscape, which seeks to indicate a state of suspension arising out of concealment and revelation of images. The structure of production was verified by identifying considerations about relationships which involve time and memory during the creative process.

[en] LITHOS EDIÇÕES DE ARTE AND THE TRANSITIONS OF USES OF THE TECHNIQUES OF REPRODUCTION OF IMAGES / [pt] A LITHOS EDIÇÕES DE ARTE E AS TRANSIÇÕES DE USO DAS TÉCNICAS DE REPRODUÇÃO DE IMAGENSPEDRO SANCHEZ CARDOSO 16 July 2008 (has links)
[pt] Esta dissertação analisa as transições de usos pelas quais
passaram as técnicas de reprodução de imagens. São
identificadas as diferentes roupagens funcionais assumidas
trabalhando junto a importantes nomes
das artes brasileiras, oferecendo-os a possibilidade de
realizar trabalhos em série em serigrafia
e litografia. Desde 2005, esta oficina realiza uma pioneira
experiência com a nova
técnica de gravação digital de matrizes de off-set, o CTP,
computer-to-plate. Desenvolvidas
[en] This dissertation analyzes the transitions of uses that the

of images have passed through. The study identifies
different functional outwardness
assumed for such doings, and, among them, it privileges the
specifically artistic
approaches: those using techniques that lost their
functional use and those that appropriate
of techniques strictly marked until then by this
functionality. In that context, it is, then,

graphic workshop founded in 1973,
in Rio de Janeiro. Along 35 years, Lithos is working close
to important names of the
Brazilian arts, offering them the possibility to carry out
serial works in screen-printing and
lithograph. Since 2005, this workshop accomplishes a
pioneer experience with the new
technique of digital recording of offset matrices, CTP,
computer-to-plate. Developed and
addressed for the graphic industry, in Lithos, those
matrices are adapted and printed in a
lithographic press Marinoni, of the century XIX.

Previous issue date: 2016-03-31 / This dissertation aims to think the picture and the body as a way to build a poetics
that speaks to the dual concept of matrix, which is a possibility of establishing time
frames coming from the direction of the imager body and expressive spaces
perceptions of the subject / object artist and researcher, senses builder. From the
body of ideas as poetic space we draw a path of trials with the titled dry lithography
technique, alternative printing technique that refers to the subversion of traditional
techniques, because it seeks to establish dialogues between the technique and its
materialities bringing to the body element, questioning him in clippings and paths that
overlap from one image to another, such as leather, fabrics film, an intimate walk
towards the time and the place called body, which permeate the "speeches" and
"truths" of society and culture . The materials used for this research were materials
discarded by consumer society and information, such as offset plates, which in the
recent past were a generating surface images now reused to generate new images;
skins; films; tissues; voile; paraffins; stone; instruments for drawing; papers of varying
textures, with the intention to provoke, evoke bodily surfaces memories. The weights
on the use of diverse materials such as propellants contemporary and relevant
reflections to the immense universe of images producer; sensitive body concept
understood in its phenomenological relation between subject and object; reflection on
the research methodology in visual poetics; and poetic concepts in physical space
and the folds, which put us in an opportunity to make connections with dry
lithography technique called, were the main theoretical framework that guided the
construction of this research.
geradora de imagens, agora, reaproveitadas para gerar novas imagens; peles;
desta pesquisa.

Cozy Mart: Convenient AestheticsEdvalson, Eric John 01 February 2017 (has links)
Convenience stores in their various forms are not only commercial outlets of foodstuffs and sundry items but are also experiential in nature; the act of going to a convenience store is a culturally shared experience. In homage to these spaces, Cozy Mart is a public art installation and performance which recreates this shared experience in an idealized form. Based on do-it-yourself culture, appropriation of public space, and artistic traditions of sculpture and printmaking, Cozy Mart invites interaction with art outside of the traditional gallery space and capitalizes on alternative methods of art distribution.
