Buckling Analysis of Sandwich Pipes Under External Pressure

Hashemian, Rouzbeh January 2014 (has links)
A general eigen-value buckling solution is developed for the buckling of long thick pipes subjected to internal and external hydrostatic pressure. The principle of stationary potential energy is used to formulate the conditions of equilibrium, neutral stability conditions, and associated boundary conditions using polar coordinates. The formulation accounts for shear deformation effects and is suited for composite pipe systems with thick cores. It involves destabilizing terms: one is due to the external hydrostatic pressure and incorporates the follower effects, and the other, is due to the pre-bucking stresses undergoing the nonlinear components of strains. The formulation adopts a work conjugate triplet consisting the Cauchy stress tensor, the Green Lagrange strain tensor, and constant constitutive relations. A Fourier series expansion of the displacement fields is adopted to transform the 2D problem into a series of independent 1D problems, thus keeping the computational effort to a minimum while preserving the accuracy of the solution. Two numerical solutions were developed and implemented under MATLAB; the first one is based on the finite difference technique and the second one is based on the finite element solution. Both solutions were shown to converge to the same solution, the finite difference from below, while the finite element converges from above. The finite element solution is then applied to predict the buckling capacity of sandwich pipes consisting of two steel pipes with a soft core. A comprehensive verification study is conducted and the validity of the formulation was established through comparison with other solutions. A parametric study is then conducted to investigate the effect of hydrostatic internal pressure, core material, core thickness, and internal and external pipe thicknesses, on the external buckling pressure of sandwich pipes.

Bio-Inspired Design of Next Generation Honeycomb Sandwich Panel Cores

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Honeycomb sandwich panels have been used in structural applications for several decades in various industries. While these panels are lightweight and rigid, their design has not evolved much due to constraints imposed by available manufacturing processes and remain primarily two-dimensional extrusions sandwiched between facings. With the growth in Additive Manufacturing, more complex geometries can now be produced, and advanced design techniques can be implemented into end use parts to obtain further reductions in weight, as well as enable greater multi-functionality. The question therefore is: how best to revisit the design of these honeycomb panels to obtain these benefits? In this work, a Bio-Inspired Design approach was taken to answer this question, primarily since the hexagonal lattice is so commonly found in wasp and bee nests, including the well-known bee’s honeycomb that inspired these panel designs to begin with. Whereas prior honeycomb panel design has primarily focused on the hexagonal shape of the unit cell, in this work we examine the relationship between the various parameters constituting the hexagonal cell itself, specifically the wall thickness and the corner radius, and also examine out-of-plane features that have not been previously translated into panel design. This work reports findings from a study of insect nests across 70 species using 2D and 3D measurements with optical microscopy and X-ray tomography, respectively. Data from these biological nests were used to identify design parameters of interest, which were then translated into design principles. These design principles were implemented in the design of honeycomb panels manufactured with the Selective Laser Sintering process and subjected to experimental testing to study their effects on the mechanical behavior of these panels. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Manufacturing Engineering 2020

FABRICATION AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF SANDWICH PANELS PRINTED BY VAT PHOTOPOLYMERIZATION

Nath, Shukantu Dev 01 September 2021 (has links)
Sandwich panels serve many purposes in engineering applications. Additive manufacturing opened the door for easy fabrication of the sandwich panels with different core structures. In this study, additive manufacturing technique, experiments, and numerical analysis are combined to evaluate the mechanical properties of sandwich panels with different cellular core structures. The sandwich panels having honeycomb, re-entrant honeycomb, diamond, square core topologies are printed with the vat photopolymerization technique. Uniaxial compression testing is performed to determine the compressive modulus, strength, and specific strength of these lightweight panels. Elasto-plastic finite element analysis having good similarities with the experimental results provided a preview of the stress distribution of the sandwich panels under applied loading. The imaging of the tested samples showed the fractured regions of the cellular cores. Dynamic mechanical analysis of the panels provided scope to compare the performance of panels and solid materials with the variation of temperature. Sandwich panels with the diamond structure exhibit better compressive properties and specific strength while the re-entrant structure offers high energy absorption capacity. The sandwich structures provided better thermo-mechanical properties than the solid material. The findings of this study offer insights into the mechanical properties of sandwich panels printed with vat photopolymerization technique which can benefit a wide range of engineering applications.

Experimental and Simplified Analytical Investigation of Full Scale Sandwich Panel Walls

Al-Rubaye, Salam Adil 01 December 2017 (has links)
Concrete sandwich wall panels have been used for decades in the precast concrete construction industry because of their thermal efficiency. To achieve full or partial-composite action in concrete sandwich panel walls, the engineer must obtain a percent composite action from a connector manufacturer, making some engineers uncomfortable. Engineers are dependent upon the recommendations given by the connector manufacturers to establish their designs. This project tested six full scale sandwich panel walls to evaluate the percent composite action of various connectors and compare the results to those provided by the composite connector manufacturers. This project aimed to validate current procedures using these methods, and to develop simpler, more efficient methods for predicting overall strength of this innovative building system. This study concluded that the reported degrees of composite action from each manufacturer are considered conservative in all instances for the connectors tested. Additionally, the intensity and type of connectors are important factors in determining the degree of partial composite action in a panel.

Full Scale Experimental Testing of Partially Composite Precast Concrete Sandwich Panels

Cox, Brandon L. 01 May 2018 (has links)
Precast concrete sandwich panels are a structural system consisting of concrete layers with insulation layers in between. The concrete layers are connected through the insulation with specially designed connectors. For engineers to properly design and analyze the strength characteristics of sandwich panels and their connectors, the engineers need to obtain recommendations from the individual connector manufacturers, which can be a very rigorous process. This project tested eight full scale precast concrete sandwich panels with two concrete layers on either side of an insulation layer with connectors concentrated at either end of each panel. The objectives of this project were to evaluate the interaction between the two concrete layers and how well the connectors transferred forces between the layers (percent of composite action) and to validate simplified methods of predicting properties of the panels by comparing the predicted panel properties to the results of the testing series. Additionally, this study evaluated the panel’s different thicknesses and lengths and compared their results.

Bending of Sandwhich Beams and Columns

Betancourt-Angel , Fernando January 1972 (has links)

A detailed synopsis of the state-of-the-art in the field of the Structural Analysis of sandwich beams is presented. Deficiencies, inaccuracies, lack of clarity, and the imposition of unnecessary assumptions of behaviour found in the related bibliography are presented in a comparative fashion. A method of analysis with obvious advantages over the others studied in this thesis is derived, and its use is suggested. The presentation of all methods of analysis is made under the most general cases of dimensions and loadings to make them as applicable as possible to the common cases encountered in sandwich components for the building industry.

Experimental work carried out on several materials with some potential to be used in sandwich members for buildings and the tests carried out on some sandwich beams and beam-columns are reported.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)
