A services stack architectural model for the CUAHSI-HIS

Seppi, James Adam 14 February 2011 (has links)
The Hydrologic Information System Project of the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI) has successfully created a large-scale prototype Hydrologic Information System (HIS). This system catalogs and provides access to over 23 million time series of hydrologic data, which are distributed across the United States at various academic, research, and governmental data providers. The service-oriented architecture that enables the HIS comprises distributed hydrologic data servers, a centralized series catalog, and various client software applications, and is supported by WaterML, a standardized language for transmission of hydrologic data. The current architectural model, termed the Network-Observations Model, of the HIS relies on a searchable central catalog of series metadata. Harvesting series metadata from large federal data providers, such as the USGS, EPA, and NCDC, has proven a laborious undertaking and involves custom database migration tools. This time-consuming harvesting task, coupled with a multitude of custom-coded solutions at the central series catalog has led to concerns with the long-term sustainability of the current architectural model. A new architectural model, termed the Services Stack Model, is proposed in this thesis. In the proposed model, a catalog of services metadata, rather than of series metadata is used to connect hydrologic data consumers with data providers. Internationally-recognized web service and data encoding standards, including the upcoming WaterML2.0 specification, from the Open Geospatial Consortium are used as the backbone of the new model. The proposed model will hopefully lead to greater acceptance of the CUAHSI-HIS, and result in increased sustainability and reduced maintenance of the system in the long-term. / text

Kamali Nejad, Mojtaba 19 October 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Faye, Wagane Koli 05 June 2014 (has links)
Energy efficiency becomes a global major issue of XXIst century as we are dealing with greenhouse emissions. For instance electric rotating machines and actuators are globally more used than before. Distribution transformers do have 97 to 99% efficiency rate, with a non negligible environmental impact due to their intensive use. A thorough understanding and modeling of losses in those electric devices could help improving and maintaining that level of environmental impact and energy efficiency. This could be productive to many electrical devices from power electronics devices to electric machines and networks, because of losses in windings and magnetic cores. The main aim of this study is to model eddy current losses in laminated magnetic cores of electric machines by means of numerical methods such as Finite Element Methods (FEM).Laminating magnetic cores besides reducing eddy current loops, induces new modeling constraints . The necessary assignment of at least two elements in the skin depth in order to have good quality solutions, leads sometimes to unsolvable problems using actual computation solutions. The purpose will be to develop source code of homogenized behavior laws of laminated magnetic cores using 2D and 3D finite element methods, applied to transformers and electrical motors. Those a priori models consider losses in the main solving process allowing to have accurate results on local and macroscopic entities varying temporally.

The crustal architecture of the Borborema Province was investigated through migration and stacking of receiver functions (phase-weighted-stack). The stacks were developed from teleseismic ?-waves recorded at 64 seismological stations distributed throughout Northeast Brazil, after applying a number of modifications to the stacking algorithm that corrected inconsistencies in the original algorithm and improved its computational efficiency. The Borborema Province is the westernmost portion of a Neoproterozoic orogen that experienced extension in the Mesozoic, leading to the formation of a number of intracontinental rift basins and, eventually, to the continental drift. The Cenozoic was marked by topographic uplift of the Province, perhaps related to coeval episodes of volcanism, which resulted in the formation of the Borborema Plateau. Due to limited understanding of the crustal architecture of the Province, the causal relationships between surface topography, Mesozoic extension, and Cenozoic uplift are poorly understood. The receiver function stacks highlight ?? conversions from the crust-mantle boundary that demonstrate a thick crust between 36 and 40 km in the southern Plateau, and crust between 30 and 32 km in the regions around, including the northern Plateau. The receiver function stacks also revealed the presence of a discontinuity between 9 and 18 km depth that tends to fade away towards the southern Plateau as the crust thickens. It is argued that the thin crust in the Borborema Province is the result of crustal stretching during Mesozoic times, and that the intracrustal discontinuity marks the location of a lowangle detachment zone that accommodated extension within the crust. The thick crust in the southern Plateau would then be a rheologically strong block that resisted deformation during the Mesozoic, while the thin crust beneath the northern Plateau would be a portion of a formerly depressed crust that experienced uplifted during the Cenozoic.

Development of Radiation Hardened High Voltage Super-Junction Power MOSFET

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: In recent years, the Silicon Super-Junction (SJ) power metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET), has garnered significant interest from spacecraft designers. This is due to their high breakdown voltage and low specific on-state resistance characteristics. Most of the previous research work on power MOSFETS for space applications concentrated on improving the radiation tolerance of low to medium voltage (~ 300V) power MOSFETs. Therefore, understanding and improving the reliability of high voltage SJMOS for the harsh space radiation environment is an important endeavor. In this work, a 600V commercially available silicon planar gate SJMOS is used to study the SJ technology’s tolerance against total ionizing dose (TID) and destructive single event effects (SEE), such as, single event burnout (SEB) and single event gate rupture (SEGR). A technology computer aided design (TCAD) software tool is used to design the SJMOS and simulate its electrical characteristics. Electrical characterization of SJMOS devices showed substantial decrease in threshold voltage and increase in leakage current due to TID. Therefore, as a solution to improve the TID tolerance, metal-nitride-oxide-semiconductor (MNOS) capacitors with different oxide/nitride thickness combinations were fabricated and irradiated using a Co-60 gamma-source. Electrical characterization showed all samples with oxide/nitride stack gate insulators exhibited significantly higher tolerance to irradiation when compared to metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitors. Heavy ion testing of the SJMOS showed the device failed due to SEB and SEGR at 10% of maximum rated bias values. In this work, a 600V SJMOS structure is designed that is tolerant to both SEB and SEGR. In a SJMOS with planar gate, reducing the neck width improves the tolerance to SEGR but significantly changes the device electrical characteristics. The trench gate SJ device design is shown to overcome this problem. A buffer layer and larger P+-plug are added to the trench gate SJ power transistor to improve SEB tolerance. Using TCAD simulations, the proposed trench gate structure and the tested planar gate SJMOS are compared. The simulation results showed that the SEB and SEGR hardness in the proposed structure has improved by a factor of 10 and passes at the device’s maximum rated bias value with improved electrical performance. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 2020

Metody pro vylepšení kvality digitálního obrazu / Methods for enhancing quality of digital images

Svoboda, Radovan January 2010 (has links)
With arrival of affordable digital technology we are increasingly coming into contact with digital images. Cameras are no longer dedicated devices, but part of almost every mobile phone, PDA and laptop. This paper discusses methods for enhancing quality of digital images with focus on removing noise, creating high dynamic range (HDR) images and extending depth of field (DOF). It contains familiarization with technical means for acquiring digital image, explains origin of image noise. Further attention is drawn to HDR, from explaining the term, physical basis, difference between HDR sensing and HDR displaying, to survey and historical development of methods dealing with creating HDR images. The next part is explaining DOF when displaying, physical basis of this phenomenon and review of methods used for DOF extension. The paper mentions problem of acquiring images needed for solving given tasks and designs method for acquiring images. Using it a database of test images for each task was created. Part of the paper also deals with design of a program, that implements discussed methods, for solving the given tasks. With help of proposed class imgmap, quality of output images is improved, by modifying maps of input images. The paper describes methods, improvements, means of setting parameters and their effects on algorithms and control of program using proposed GUI. Finally, comparison with free software for extending DOF takes place. The proposed software provides at least comparable results, the correct setting of parameters for specific cases allows to achieve better properties of the resulting image. Time requirements of image processing are worse because designed software was not optimised.

Převodník Ethernet na CAN pro řízení mobilních robotů / An Ethernet-CAN controller for mobile robots

Uherka, Bohumil January 2012 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with creating the Ethernet converter protocol UDP of the CAN bus with the used application layer CANopen. The converter is executed by means of the microcontroller ARM Cortex-M3, namely by STM32F107VC by STMicroelectronics. The project is designed for the purpose of serving as the main motor controlling card of the mobile advertising robot FektBot. In the theoretical part you can find a brief analysis of the ARM microcotrollers problematics, particularly the STM32F107VC. Then the thesis introduces the Ethernet technology including the UDP protocol. Finally, the CAN bus and its application layer CANopen is described. The practical part shows first of all the scheme of converter hardware. You can find there the design of printed circuits including all components for proper functioning, i.e. especially the microcontroller STM32F107VC, Ethernet PHY, the CAN bus transceiver and switched stabilized supply. Next chapter describes software creating for the given converter. Firstly there are analyzed possible ways of STM32F107VC programming, and then there is the main conception of resolving the programming part shown. The thesis then deals with the concrete implementation of the UDP Ethernet protocol. For that, the lwIP stack is used, over which the application layer of the FektBot robot works. Then there is analyzed the implementation of the CAN bus and CANopen. At the end of the practical part, the final execution of the converter software and the ways of its testing are described.
