The assessment of the involvement of parents in imparting HIV/AIDS related information to their adolescents

Lekonyana, Montseng Priscilla January 2015 (has links)
Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is rapidly spreading in the whole world and many adolescents start relationships at a younger age without knowing the danger of the sexually transmitted diseases. Parents should involve themselves in imparting knowledge about HIV/AIDS related information. It is imperative that parents and adolescents should have that relationship of discussing about the dangers of HIV/ AIDS. Adolescents should be taught about the importance of relationships and how to protect themselves against the dreaded disease. The research took the form of a qualitative interpretive case study focusing on a study sample of twenty parents and twelve members of a focus group. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, document analysis and observations. The study examined the hidden issues or underlying the involvement of parents in imparting HIV/AIDS related information to their adolescents. The study revealed that many parents are aware of the pandemic and they felt it is imperative to discuss with their adolescents. Family life education is very much important even if their adolescents are taught about the HIV/AIDS related information at schools. Government is also involved in ensuring that there are preventative measures against the killer disease. This should be a collective effort by both the parents and teachers. The study further recommends the establishment of a library in order to enhance the literacy levels of parents and educators. It will be very much significant to educate or train the trainers in order to educate even our future generation. HIV/AIDS is incurable, therefore, it is imperative for the Department of education to ensure the literacy levels so that even the department of Health contributes its information to inform everybody about the danger of incurable diseases more specifically HIV/AIDS.

An Assessment on the Impact of Family Dynamics on the Runaway Problem Among Teenagers

Ekici, Siddik 08 1900 (has links)
Although Turkey is a country with strong social cohesion, figures of runaway children in Turkey are increasing dramatically. This research focused on the factors that cause children to run away and on interaction programs to intervene and/or prevent this problem. Until recently, Turkish family life was able to avoid such problems, but with the effect of westernization and social mobility in Turkey, the basic family structure has become more like the family structure in the western countries. Studies reveal that runaway episodes happen in all families regardless of such factors as economic, race, or geographic situations. Teenagers run away for several reasons; however, early intervention is highly suggested by studies to mitigate the problem. Although, parent-child conflict plays a significant role as a reason for youth leaving home, on the other hand family interaction still remains the best alternative to the problem.

Family Sex Talk: Analyzing the Influence of Family Communication Patterns on Parent and Late Adolescent's Sex Conversations

Allen, Evette L. 08 1900 (has links)
Family communication has the potential to affect a variety of youth behavioral outcomes including adolescent sexual risk behavior. Within chapter 1, I present past literature on adolescent sexual risk behaviors, family communication patterns, and the gaps associated with those areas. In chapter 2, I review previous literature on adolescent sexual risk behavior, parent-child communication and family communication patterns. In chapter 3, I present the method which includes a description of the participants, procedures, measures, and data analysis used. In Chapter 4, I present the results of the study. According to the results of the study, father-child communication is not a better predictor of adolescent sexual risk behavior. A higher quantity of parent-child communication does not lead to less adolescent sexual risk behavior. Participants with a pluralistic family type do significantly differ from laissez-faire and protective family types in regards to levels of parent-child communication. Participants with a consensual family type do have significantly higher levels of parent-child communication in comparison to laissez-faire family types, but not protective family types. Finally, in chapter 5, I present the discussion with a review of previous research (consistent or inconsistent with the current findings), limitations and conclusions for the current study.

No. of bitstreams: 1 maria de fatima.pdf: 2365792 bytes, checksum: ee5de7e38b0d6341930f2d1d08d94041 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2003-03-23 / The early fatherhood in low income family requires structural adaptations from many factors such as change and adaptation of roles related to psychosocial and family aspects. This subject has been discussed to a low extention through scientific papers. When it is found, it usually appears to have an unfavorable consequence. From the 80 s, this vision started to be treated through a new perspective, by the inclusion of the male adolescent participation in the reproductive process. Thereby, this study aims to understand the adolescent fatherhood repercussion on the organization of low income families. Besides, it aims to understand the changes that the fatherhood brought to the adolescent and his family on his life project (study, work and social relationships), as well as to verify the possible changes in relation to the adolescent parents in a point of view of family roles. In this study, eight families were evaluated, being three of that used in the first phase and the other five ones in the research effective phase (second phase). In both phases, it was applied an individual interview to each one of the participants (adolescent and his parents, uncles and grandparents which have parent role). As inclusion critery it was selected primary adolescents 16 to 19 years old, with a son (or daughter) three months to one year old. The participants are from low income families, living in Recife- PE periphery. The interviews were recorded, written and analized according to the objectives and understanding of General Systems Theory. The results pointed out the family and social support as fundamental factors on the adolescence fatherhood transition process. It also showed that it brings a suffering to the father adolescent due to the necessity of living his love and corresponding to the necessities of the providing role. The solution of this conflict will have a favorable impact on the way of understanding adolescence fatherhood, future of the father adolescent, his son, and the relationships that this father is able to establish / A paternidade na adolescência de família pobre requer adaptações estruturais, decorrentes de vários fatores que a envolvem tais como mudança e adaptação de papéis relacionados aos aspectos psicossocial e familiar.

Magnusson, Ellinor, Hartonen, Emelie January 2021 (has links)
Background: The role of the midwife is to support the woman during pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnant teenagers often need more support and help from the midwife during pregnancy than older women.  Purpose: Investigate the experience midwives have of nursing pregnant teenagers in the Swedish maternal health care Method: A qualitative study with inductive approach based on interviews with 6 different midwives. The data analysis was performed using a qualitative content analysis. Result: The results can be subdivided into 4 main categories: The midwives encounter with the teenager, preparing the teenager for life post pregnancy, how cultural aspects may affect, and the feeling of inadequacy. The midwives tried to look after the individual in each meeting to create a trusting relationship. They wanted to prepare the teenager for parenthood and for the future. The midwives pointed out that the teenager's cultural background influenced how she handled the pregnancy and prepared to become a parent. Furthermore, the midwives described an inadequacy in the basic program in maternal health care and the importance of involving other professions. Finally, the midwives expressed their own need for guidance. Conclusion: The results show the importance of an individual approach and consideration for cultural differences towards the pregnant teenagers in order to build a trusting relationship. In order for the care of pregnant teenagers to be able to be individually adapted in accordance with the midwife's experience, requirements are placed on both the midwife's competence and approach, as well as on the management of the maternal health care.

Patterns of adolescent-parent conflicts over schoolwork in Chinese families

Cao, Ge 25 July 2019 (has links)
According to previous studies, schoolwork is the major source of adolescent-parent conflicts in Mainland China. Adolescents' personal reasoning over schoolwork conflicts reveals their desire for achieving autonomy in schoolwork. Meanwhile, their avoiding and obeying conflict resolution strategies co-exist with self-assertion. Parental psychological control is found among Mainland Chinese parents in the situations about offspring's schoolwork, which has detrimental effects on children's autonomy development. With the theoretical underpinnings of social domain theory, ecological systems theory, self-determination theory and family systems theory, the present study aims to examine the patterns of adolescent-parent conflicts over schoolwork in Ningxia of Mainland China, and explore the role of parental psychological control and the development of teenagers' autonomy in schoolwork conflicts. This study adopted grounded theory approach. Convenience and snowball sampling were conducted at the initial stage of sampling while purposeful and conceptual sampling were adopted to develop the grounded theory. There were 63 parents and teenagers participating in the present research. Specifically, 28 parents and 35 adolescents joined in this research. Data was collected through semi-structured individual interview and joint interview. Coping coding, axial coding and selective coding were used to analyze data. A grounded theory on patterns of conflicts over schoolwork, as well as parental psychological control and teenagers' autonomy revealed in schoolwork conflicts is developed in this study. Adolescents' reasoning about adolescent-parent conflicts over schoolwork is reactive to parental expectation and investment. Their resolution strategies in schoolwork conflicts also respond to parents' strategies in the process of conflict resolution. Psychological control is revealed in parents' conflict resolution strategies, which brings controlled motivation revealed in children's reasoning about schoolwork conflicts. Controlled motivation discourages the development of adolescents' autonomy over schoolwork. Contributions are made to fill up the gaps of adolescent-parent conflicts over schoolwork in Chinese families, as well as the advancement of adolescents' autonomy development in the context of adolescent-parent conflicts over schoolwork in Chinese families
