The purpose of this project was to provide students enrolled in non-major biology courses, e.g., Biology 100 at Ball State University, with a source of reference material including definitions and/or examples of basic biological terms and a reading list of current articles related to course topics.The need for such a reference source had been indicated by course evaluations and discussions involving students and instructors.The project was conducted in three phases. The first phase involved researching of the course materials in Biology 100, and the determination of which terms should be included in a glossary. The selection of terms was limited to words which are basic to an understanding of concepts and theories taught in the course and to words which students generally had difficulty in understanding.The second phase of the project involved the writing of definitions for the selected terms. Although these terms are defined in other reference literature, often the definitions are awkward, difficult, and/ or irrelevant to the biology non-major.Definitions were written to complement and reinforce the terms as they were applied in the context of Biology 100. Examples used to clarify definitions were selected to relate to the context in which the term was introduced in the students’ learning activities.The third phase of the project involved the compilation of current articles and/or books pertaining to the course topics which will provide the inquiring student with sources of interesting and related subjects. This information will assist students in clarifying difficult points and provide materials which will enable students to pursue a topic at greater depth.

Cette thèse s’inscrit à la fois dans le cadre de la théorie des trois fonctions primaires qui s’inspire de la théorie distributionaliste de Z. Harris (la fonction prédicative, la fonction argumentale et la fonction actualisatrice) et dans la lignée des travaux qui ne distinguent pas la langue générale des langues spécialisées, du point de vue de leur fonctionnement syntaxique et sémantique. La terminologie médicale est décrite, ici, dans le cadre de la phrase. Nous avons analysé les termes médicaux selon leurs emplois prédicatifs ou argumentaux. Cette analyse a donné lieu à l’élaboration de bases de données. Une interface d’interrogation a été élaborée, par la suite, afin de permettre aux utilisateurs potentiels d’effectuer des recherches ciblées. / This thesis falls within the framework of the Three Primary Functions theory based on Z. Harris’s distributionalist theory (predicative function, argumental function and actualizing function), as well as in the line of work that does not distinguish between general and specialized languages considering their syntactic and semantic functioning. The medical terminology is described here in the context of the sentence. We analyzed the medical terms according to their argumental or predicative employment. This analysis led to the development of databases. A query interface has been developed subsequently, to allow potential users to conduct targeted research.

This study explores the dynamics of terminological expansion in what is referred to as the ‘women’s register’, seen against the background of the development of Afrikaans from Dutch within the heterogeneity of cultures and languages – first at the Cape, later in the broader South African context. This study addresses the historical imbalance in literature regarding the contribution of women as far as the creation of appropriate terms for their varied activities is concerned. The holistic sociolinguistic approach that was taken, made it possible to highlight the linguistic legacy of previously marginalised or overlooked subgroups, in particular the lexical contribution of slave and indigenous women to the women’s register in Afrikaans. On a terminological level, the study examines the nature and extent of term creation within the women’s register by exploring the use of loan words, transliterations, loan translations, compounds and derivations as well the terminologisation of existing words. / Prof. A.E. Disruptive Technologies can assist an organisation to maintain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Different terminology is used in the literature to describe disruptive technologies associated with uncertainty and risk. The term “disruptive technologies” is described and explained in comparison to sustaining technology. The aim of the research is to determine the impact of disruptive technologies on the ICT environment of an organisation. The impact of disruptive technology is discussed in terms of the business value of information technologies, the value network of the organisation, the current security framework of the information technology architecture, business processes and standards, approaches to business strategy, involvement of executive management and influence on customers and clients of the organisation. Three organisations within the South African environment agreed to be the subjects of the case studies. O objetivo desta dissertação é apontar e descrever problemas de Terminologia referentes à variação diacrônica de uma terminologia, a partir da análise conceitual de duas estruturas referentes a dois modelos de processo (engenho e usina) de uma mesma área técnica - produção de açúcar -, separadas por um espaço determinado de tempo e submetidas a constantes revoluções lingüísticas e culturais. Para tanto, descrevemos quais fatores interferem nessas transformações; em que medida o grau de consolidação de um domínio representa sua sistematicidade; e procuramos comprovar, a partir de pesquisa diacrônica, que a dinâmica dos subsistemas de especialidades renova-se sob as mesmas regras de criação da língua geral. / The aim of this work is to point out and describe Terminology problems related to the diachronic variation of a terminology based on the conceptual analysis of two structures, concerning two process models (sugar plantation and factory) of a same technical area - sugar production, separated by a certain period of time and submitted to constant technological, linguistic and cultural revolutions. For this reason, we described the factors which interfere in those transformations; the manner that the consolidation level of a social sphere represents its systemic regularity; and we tried to prove, based on a diachronic research, that the dynamics of the speciality subsystems has the same functioning of the one that rules the general language.
