A case study of an elementary science teacher's efforts to transform students' scientific communication from "informal science talk" to "formal science talk"Lestermeringolo Thatch, La Vergne, 1967- 29 August 2008 (has links)
This investigation examines how Ms. Jones scaffolds students' science language development. The study closely investigates the instructional strategies she used to help her students move from "informal Science talk" to "formal Science talk," and looks at the strategies she implemented under the scope of the anticipated themes of verbal cues, nonverbal cues, and praise. "Informal science talk" is defined in this study as a limited domain of discourse with little or no science vocabulary, while "formal science talk" is defined as an extended discourse that included the appropriate uses of science-specific vocabulary. In Ms. Jones' classroom the goal is to teach for understanding and lifelong learning, in accordance with the book How People Learn (National Research Council 2000), which contains implications for the teaching of Science. According to the standards of that book, Ms. Jones has the required subject knowledge, and an understanding of how students learn and the short- and long-term outcomes of such learning. She has created a classroom environment that fosters student thinking through participation in high-quality lessons and laboratory experiments. Through an iterative process of questioning and answering, students are given the opportunity to think about what they are learning and to also self- assess and be able to understand what they do not know. The research method used was a case study, that allowed the researcher to study, interpret and present an in-depth investigation of one teacher and how she scaffolded her students' language of school Science (LSS) development with technical vocabulary as an integral part of that process. The method of analysis was developed from a sociocultural perspective of learning. Classroom observations were conducted, and recorded via fieldnotes and videotaping of lessons for five weeks during the Spring of 2005 and four weeks during the Spring of 2006. The themes that emerged showed that the teacher's instructional designs were embedded in the Inquiry Model (Data Set II--Spring 2005) and the Science Process Skills Model (Data Set II--Spring 2006). The findings of the study reveal the characteristics of a superior type of learning environment organized around the instructional designs that Ms. Jones used. Her technique promoted the development of rich science language integrated with the vocabulary of the domain. Ms. Jones' medium of instruction was "talk." She overtly used verbal cues to promote her students science language development, which was the language of school science and reflected the different domains of the subject at the elementary grades (the Nature of Science, Life, Earth, and Physical Sciences). This study shows that a knowledgeable teacher not only knows the subject matter; she also knows how to give the right feedback, what demonstrations or analogies to use, and how to engage students in scientific investigations while providing appropriate support (scaffolding). / text

A PROPOSED CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM FOR THE PROCESS OF ADMINISTRATIONLinthicum, Seth Hance January 1980 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation was to apply a proposed classification system based on six categorical divisions of a seven circle pattern to the concept, administration. Its applicability was measured by comparison of this classification system with that of the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC) concerning administration. The proposed system might prove more efficient in locating terms in this subject-field. For the purpose of the study, administration was viewed as a process for the accomplishment of goals. Six generic terms proposed by the researcher form the structure of a proposed septimal classification system which was applied to the administrative process. These generic terms were used: (1) permanence, (2) change, (3) value, (4) interrelationships, (5) structure, and (6) application. This structure provides a different sequence and order from the various designs of this concept as proposed by scholars of administration, from Fayol through Getzels and Halpin. The researcher selected six generic facets to categorize terms in administration which were cited as sub-processes of the administrative process. The generic categories used to categorize the major sub-processes of administration represent those derived from the cultural scope, knowledge and experience of the researcher; these generic categories could form the divisions of any single concept. They were projected to divide administration, but together represented a complete administrative process from goals to their achievement, and conveyed an understanding of the concept of administration. The proposed Septimal Classification System was applied by categorizing terms used to describe this process by selected authors. A comparative test of the proposed Septimal Classification System with the DDC was made; also, the terms used by authorities in the field to divide their subject matter were subjected to narrative analysis. An attempt was made to show the completeness of the concept of administration from its associative elements. In this analysis, the terms and content were developed from a review of authors on administration and were compared with those developed in the proposed classification system. A comparison of classification systems was made (with the DDC) by differential criteria. Each classification system categorized ideas in administration; the categories of the Septimal system provided a guide or structure for, and unified the process of administration for the student or practitioner in a way that was found lacking in the DDC. The results of the comparison were not conclusive. Whether the proposed system would improve the book classification of the DDC could not be determined by this study. This study showed the ideas within the concept, administration, could be classified into a meaningful process containing the terms of selected authors in the field in different categories. Its ease of use, however, was largely dependent on the selection and allocation by the user of the generic categories, proposed in the study. This led to the conclusion that the application of the Septimal Classification System, if perfected by other users in the field, could lead to an ordered view of the concept, administration, which would encompass the various cited approaches explaining this subject-field. Continued application of the Septimal classification and its generic categories as a structural model to classify subjects in other subject areas, could facilitate an understanding of any subject-field. The student of administration in fields other than education could discover new relationships by application of the Septimal Classification System.

The Irish Astronomical Tract: A Case Study of Scientific Terminology in 14th Century IrishWilliams, John Alfred January 2003 (has links)
SYNOPSIS Included in this work, is a general historical overview of the development of astronomical knowledge in the West from the realms of Greek scholarship in classical times through to the Renaissance and the threshold of modern physics. The subject matter of both the Irish Tract and this review extends beyond the strict confines of astronomy, encompassing the physical sciences in general. The extent of astronomical knowledge in medieval Ireland is given specific attention with a review of scholarly works in Latin since the seventh century. This includes a number of specialist studies on astronomical topics and related cosmographical fields. Also included are numerous incidental references to astronomical matters from both Irish and Latin literature during the Middle Ages. Attention is devoted to the surviving manuscript copies of the Tract and the question of its sources, origin and purpose. A possible Dominican context for the compilation and dissemination of the Tract is considered. A detailed commentary of the technical content of each chapter is presented, together with reference to contemporary developments in the West and to the occasional clues as to the institutional, geographical and chronological origins of the Tract. A study of the technical terminology used by the Irish compiler is presented in detail. Reference is made both to earlier Irish terminology where appropriate, as well as to the limitations imposed by the fact that many of the scientific concepts were yet to attain clarity that came with the advent of Newtonian physics, Copernican astronomy and post-Colombian geography. The data entries on ms Stowe B are evaluated and compared with computer generated data of astronomical movements in the 14th and 15th centuries with a view to ascertaining the time of compilation of the Tract and its working life. A A revised English translation of the Tract is included in the appendices together with Maxwell Close's unpublished commentary to relevant portions. An Irish edition, closely following the ITS edition of 1914 is also included. Corruptions to the text are footnoted together with the likely run of the original text.

A produção dessa obra fundamenta-se no fato de que as pesquisas em Lexicografia que relacionam aspectos culturais ao léxico têm demonstrado a importância que esse tipo de unidade desempenha na transmissão e na recepção de conhecimentos a respeito das características de uma sociedade. Essa constatação permite ponderar que os itens lexicais pertencentes a uma determinada língua determinam aspectos ligados às crenças, aos costumes e, de forma específica neste estudo, às características sexuais de seus indivíduos. Dessa maneira, realizamos uma investigação para verificar e comprovar a existência de um léxico capaz de revelar as possíveis diferenças de gênero no Brasil. Selecionamos, a seguir, para compor nosso corpus, publicidades impressas voltadas ao sexo masculino ou nas quais ele é o protagonista, extraídas da revista Veja, versão impressa e/ou online, entre os anos de 2006 e de 2011. Essa escolha partiu do pressuposto de que os publicitários responsáveis pela construção dos textos escritos direcionam-nos a um público-alvo cada vez mais específico nas campanhas publicitárias de seus clientes, pois, assim, podem conduzir, com mais acuidade, os potenciais consumidores à decisão de compra. Com essas publicidades, também pudemos constituir os conceitos que fariam parte de nosso produto, os quais denominamos de léxicos-marketing, ou seja, unidades-conceito representativas de um segmento de mercado. The production of this work is based on the fact that research in lexicography that relates cultural aspects to the lexicon have demonstrated the importance that lexical units play in the transmission and reception of knowledge about the characteristics of a society. This observation allows considering that the lexical items belonging to a certain language determine the aspects related to beliefs, customs and, specifically in this study, the sexual characteristics of its individuals. Thus, we conducted an investigation to verify and prove the existence of a lexicon capable of revealing the possible gender differences in Brazil. For this, theoretical studies in the areas of Lexicology, Sociology and Sociolinguistics confirmed our propositions. We chose then, for the selection of our corpus, print advertisements targeted at males or in which they are the protagonists, extracted from Veja magazine, print and/or online, between the years of 2006 and 2011. This choice was made based on the hypothesis that advertising writers‟ goal is to appeal with their campaigns to an audience that‟s increasingly more specific and be able to lead, these potential consumers more accurately to a purchase. Para tanto, nosso trabalho consiste na elaboração de um dicionário Terminológico Onomasiológico eletrônico dos neônimos do domínio da Biotecnologia no Brasil, buscando a realização do tratamento dos dados em português e seus equivalentes em inglês; para o qual, seguimos os pressupostos propostos por Babini (2001). Entende-se por dicionário onomasiológico todo dicionário que permite encontrar uma unidade lexical ou terminológica a partir de seu conteúdo semântico. A metodologia empregada no tratamento terminográfico e na pesquisa terminológica bilíngue foi norteada pela TCT (Teoria Comunicativa da Terminologia), que nos auxiliou a lidar com as diferenças existentes entre os dois idiomas estudados. As principais referências metodológicas e teóricas que guiaram nossas buscas, especialmente no que tange aos neônimos, à formação de palavras e à busca equivalentes lexicais, foram Alves (2009, 2008, 2007, 2001), Felber (1984), Dubuc (1985), Rondeau (1984), Alpìzar-Castillo (1995), Cabré (1993, 1999), Barros (2004), Babini (2006, 2001a, 2001). Um ponto inovador do modelo adotado são as possibilidades de buscas. Como suporte eletrônico para a criação de nosso dicionário, criamos uma base de dados no Microsoft Access, sendo as informações armazenadas... / The present study aims at carrying out the analysis of a Biotechnology vocabulary subset, detecting domain neonims. To this end, our study relies on the elaboration of an Electronic Onomasiological Terminological Dictionary of the Biotechnology Neonims, searching equivalents in English and performing the data treatment in Portuguese; for which we followed the ideas proposed by Babini (2001). An onomasiological dictionary can be understood as any dictionary that allows to find a lexical or terminological unit from its semantic content. The methodology employed in the terminographic treatment and in the terminological research was guided by the CTT (Communicative Theory of Terminology), which served to handle the existing differences between the two languages studied. The main methodological and theoretical references that guided our searches, specially when it comes to neonims, word formation and the search for lexical equivalents were Alves (2009, 2008, 2007, 2001), Felber (1984), Dubuc (1985), Rondeau (1984), Alpìzar-Castillo (1995), Cabré (1993, 1999), Barros (2004), Babini (2006, 2001a, 2001). An innovative feature in the adopted model are the search possibilities. Specifically, our dictionary offers to the user the sememe (set of semes or semantic traits that compose each term in the dictionary) in the Portuguese language, as well as the equivalents in the English language. As for the electronic platform for the dictionary, we created a database in MS Access, and the information was stored in tables, what allowed a better organization and treatment of the information.
