Uma proposta de tradução da terminologia jurídica do Ancien Régime presente na peça Les Plaideurs de Jean Racine / A translation proposal of the legal Ancien Régime\'s terminology in Jean Racine\'s play Les Plaideurs

Bortolato, Carolina Poppi 16 September 2013 (has links)
Translation studies have been greatly expanding during the last few years as well as the interest of researchers in the convergence of Translation itself and other different areas such as Specialized Translation, Literary Translation, Terminology, Diachronic Terminology and Corpus Linguistics. Given this profusion of points of view, this study aimed at establishing a very close dialogue between the traditional association of translation studies and terminology of specialized texts and the recent association of translation studies and terminology of non-technical texts (ZAVAGLIA et al, 2010). According to the proposals by Cabré (1999) and Barbosa (2006), we argue that the free movement of specialized areas terms in non-specialized texts such as literature is not something new which, in our opinion, demands a terminological documentation by the nontechnical text translator before the act of translation. Using Jean Racines French play Les Plaideurs (1668) as our corpus of study not yet translated into Brazilian Portuguese , legal terms related to the Ancien Régime present in the play were firstly collected aided by the techniques of Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004). Secondly, based on the foundations of Diachronic Terminology, bilingual terminological records (AUBERT, 1996 & CAMACHO, 2004) were elaborated, which determined the conceptual boundaries of the collected candidates. Finally, proposals of equivalents in Brazilian Portuguese were suggested according to Auberts Modalities of Translation (1998, 2006). At last, we found that it is also necessary that the nontechnical text translator gives special attention to the variety of language registers that may exist in these types of texts, exemplified here by means of universal and classic literature, which brings the need for joint working between the areas of Terminology and Translation, breaking strictly formal parameters.

Legal translation and terminology in the Irish Free State, 1922-1937

McGrory, Orla January 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores the role and impact of Rannóg an Aistriúcháin - the Oireachtas Government Translation section - on English-Irish legal translation and terminology, with particular focus on the period 1922-1937; a period bookended by the establishment of the Irish Free State and the enactment of Bunreacht na hÉireann (the Constitution of Ireland) in 1937. It aims to assess the efficacy and consistency of the translation strategies and Irish legal terms employed by Rannóg an Aistriúcháin, and to investigate how modern translation theory – specifically equivalence theory – may be applied to English-Irish legal translation as a whole. While a semantic study of the English and Irish versions of the amended 1937 Constitution has previously been carried out (Ó Cearúil, 1999), there has yet to be any specific study of other translated English-Irish legislative material within the Irish Free State or, indeed, of any laws translated within the Rannóg. This is an area which holds great research potential as regards assessing the efficacy of a particular body of translations, as the position of the Irish language in the Republic of Ireland is a unique one. Not only is Irish an official language of the European Union, but it enjoys constitutional status as the National and First Official language of the Republic of Ireland, with Article 25.4.6o of the Irish Constitution 1937 providing that: ‘In case of conflict between the texts of a law enrolled under this section in both the official languages, the text in the national language shall prevail’. In other words, should the Irish translation deviate in any way from its English legislative counterpart, it is the Gaelic translated legislation - along with all its construed connotations and associations - which has the upper hand. With this reasoning in mind, this thesis takes a corpus of EN-GA legislative material translated by Rannóg an Aistriúcháin during the period 1922-1937, from which legal terms are chosen for analysis and qualitatively and semantically assessed in the context of Equivalence translation theory and legal translation. Ultimately, this thesis provides a new critical assessment of the reliability of Irish language legal terminology in primary legislation from this period; an analysis of how Equivalence theory may be applied to EN-GA legal translation as a whole; and provides some guidelines for future endeavours in English-Irish legal translation and terminology.

HEALTH BY CHOCOLATE : "Food of the Gods: Cure for Humanity? A Cultural History of the Medicinal and Ritual Use of Chocolate"

Green, Frida January 2007 (has links)

Abstract

Translation is not an easy task. There is a plethora of problems and difficulties which needs to be tackled in the process of translating a text from one language to another. This analysis concentrates on three of them – terminology, connectors and cultural aspects. The study is based on the Swedish translation of an English text concerning the medical and ritual use of chocolate in ancient Native American cultures as well as in Europe during the colonial era. The main problem encountered in the translation of this text was how to generalize it so it would suit the Swedish public but still maintain the level of formality of the source text. The specialized terminology found belongs to the fields of medicine and botany and these terms were often explained or replaced with more common words. A couple of the cultural aspects were also explained, since, for example, the cultural area Mesoamerica may not be known to the target readers unless they are knowledgeable in anthropology or archaeology. This made the target text somewhat less formal than the original so, to compensate, the translation of the adverbial connectors however and thus were on occasion translated with the more formal Swedish emellertid and således.

The Development and Evaluation of Self-Instructional Materials for Use in Teaching Selected Business Vocabulary Terms

Vance, Rosemary Casey 12 1900 (has links)
The purposes of the study were to develop self-instructional materials for teaching selected business terms to college students, to determine the effect of using these materials as compared to the effect of using a lecture notebook teaching technique for instruction in business vocabulary and to no instruction in business vocabulary, and to compare the effect of using the lecture-notebook teaching technique to no instruction in business vocabulary. Four conclusions were drawn from the statistical findings from this experiment. (1) Specific instruction in business vocabulary by either of the two teaching approaches used in this experiment is more effective in increasing the business vocabulary of college business communications students than no instruction. (2) When total groups including all levels of business vocabulary knowledge are considered, the self-instructional materials are more effective than the lecture-notebook technique. (3) For students with a high initial knowledge of business vocabulary, one of these techniques is not more effective than the other. (4) The self-instructional materials used in this study are particularly effective for teaching business vocabulary to students who have a low initial knowledge of business vocabulary.

Coming to terms with cricket : A translation study of terminology in texts on cricket

Tengbom, Christina January 2021 (has links)
This essay discusses the translation of terms in four texts on cricket. The first aim of the essay was to identify the most appropriate translation strategy for each term based on Niska and Frøili’s (1992:361) six translation strategies. Their strategies were complemented by considerations of equivalence and Swedish grammar and language structure. The identified terms were divided into the categories Players, Field & Equipment and Rules & Scoring and the second and third aims of the essay were to investigate if a particular translation strategy was more commonly used for all the cricket terms, as well as if a particular translation strategy was more frequently used for a specific category. This information can aid translators in the decision making when translating new cricket terms. The result showed that direct transfer and translation of an explanation of the source term were more frequently used, sometimes in a combination in the form of a translation doublet. With regards to the three categories, direct transfer was used in the majority of term translations in the category Rules & Scoring, while the strategies were more evenly distributed for the other two categories. No reliable conclusions can be drawn from the results in this essay as a much larger sample would be required. It may, however, be an indication of that certain translation strategies are more applicable in the translation of cricket terms and can be used as a starting point for future studies.

The reception of Eugen Wüster’s work and the development of terminology

Campo, Ángela 10 1900 (has links)
The main objective of this dissertation is to explore and analyze the reception of Eugen Wüster’s work with the goal of explaining how it has influenced the development of terminology as a discipline. In the history of terminology, Wüster’s work, especially his general theory of terminology, has been an inspiration for terminology research studies. Nowadays, the reactions to Wüster’s work have been both positive and negative. His legacy is still considered the cornerstone in the field of terminology. Our specific undertaking is to explore the reception of Wüster’s work by studying what has been said about it in the academic literature written in English, French and Spanish, between 1979 and 2009, in Europe and the Americas. This study, carried out within the context of debate on the reception of Wüster’s work, focuses on analyzing the responses to and comments on his work. It takes into account his work, its positive and negative reception, new theoretical approaches to terminology and studies that have concentrated on analyzing the state of the art of terminology. The research process follows an exploratory method, focusing on studying texts where authors quote, cite or make reference to Wüster’s work. It also falls under descriptive research studies as it accurately portrays the characteristics of the debate around the reception of his work. The results are revealing, and lead to a more refined view of what comprises the reception of Wüster’s work. First, Wüster is recognized as an important founding figure in modern terminology, as a pioneer of terminology standardization, and as the first author to propose a theory of terminology. Second, an adequate contextualization is an essential starting point for an accurate and appropriate appreciation of Wüster’s contribution to the development of the discipline. Third, results uncovered how new theoretical approaches to terminology have coped with advances in technology and science. These approaches have also identified new methods, methodologies, applications and uses for terminology. Forth, a sample study of 166 academic journal articles confirms that Wüster work has generated mixed reactions in Europe and the Americas, and that its reception has been more positive than negative. Results indicate a strong interest in criticizing Wüster’s work, yet a lack of familiarity with it seems to exist. The “methodology of scientific research programmes” proposed by Lakatos (1978), applied as an interpretive model, demonstrates that the reception of Wüster’s contribution to terminology has influenced the development of the academic field and that terminology is now perceived as a research programme. The main conclusion is that terminology has undergone substantial changes leading, in Lakatos’ terms, to a stronger theoretical and descriptive discipline.
