Translation of Fixed Collocations and Idioms / Fiksuotų kolokacijų ir idiomų vertimas

Stočkūnaitė, Milda 13 June 2013 (has links)
The object of the study is the structure and semantics of fixed collocations and idioms in the English language and their Lithuanian equivalents. The aim of the work is to research how English fixed collocations and idioms are translated into Lithuanian and what stylistic and semantic changes they undergo. The main research methods applied in the research are descriptive theoretical literary analysis, contrastive method and statistical method. In theoretical part the concepts of fixed collocation and idiom are discussed. Further consideration is focused on the classification of previously mentioned idiomatic expressions. Fixed collocations and idioms are classified regarding to what they mean and what they refer to. Translation strategies and the difficulties when translating the idiomatic expressions are discussed. The practical part is divided into three parts which examine fully equivalent, semantically similar, formally modified and functionally equivalent fixed collocations and idioms. The selected examples prove that the majority of idioms undergo semantic, stylistic or structural changes in the process of translating them from one language into the other. Though there are some English idioms that have equivalents in Lithuanian, in the majority of cases only few or none of the elements coincide.

Translating Place Names : A study on English place names in Swedish texts

Wångstedt, Emelie January 2018 (has links)
This study looks at English place names in Swedish texts with a focus on which translation strategies are more common today, whether there is a progress from a diachronic perspective from translation to transference, and whether the prominence of each place name affects the chosen translation strategy. The thesis includes a corpusbased study of 299 place names collected from four sources, which were researched in the online newspaper archive found on the website of the National Library of Sweden. A chapter from Rowan Moore’s book Slow Burn City was translated and its use of place names analysed in light of the corpus results. The results showed that transference is the most used strategy today while part-translations and additions are also frequently used. The prominence of a place has been shown to be a determining factor in the chosen translation strategy, with more well-known places being transferred in English than lesser known places. The results varied between the different categories of place names (institutions and facilities, objects and works of art and geographical places) regarding the most frequent strategies in the past with some categories showing a progress from translation to transference, others with even use of translation and transference in the past and finally two categories where English was more common in the past than today.

Translation strategies of H.P. Lovecraft’s neologisms into Japanese

Lindblad, Jonathan January 2017 (has links)
The present study conducted to investigate the different strategies applied by two Japanese translators translating H.P. Lovecraft's neologisms. The neologisms for the study were collected from Clore's (2009) lexicon and analysed based on Newmark's (1988) twelve types of neologisms. Each neologism was then compared to its Japanese equivalent found in the Japanese translations of Lovecraft's collective work. The neologisms were analysed and categorised based on Newmark's (1988) eleven proposed strategies. Seven of Newmark’s (1988) eleven strategies were found and "Naturalisation" was the most frequently applied strategy.

Coming to terms with cricket : A translation study of terminology in texts on cricket

Tengbom, Christina January 2021 (has links)
This essay discusses the translation of terms in four texts on cricket. The first aim of the essay was to identify the most appropriate translation strategy for each term based on Niska and Frøili’s (1992:361) six translation strategies. Their strategies were complemented by considerations of equivalence and Swedish grammar and language structure. The identified terms were divided into the categories Players, Field & Equipment and Rules & Scoring and the second and third aims of the essay were to investigate if a particular translation strategy was more commonly used for all the cricket terms, as well as if a particular translation strategy was more frequently used for a specific category. This information can aid translators in the decision making when translating new cricket terms. The result showed that direct transfer and translation of an explanation of the source term were more frequently used, sometimes in a combination in the form of a translation doublet. With regards to the three categories, direct transfer was used in the majority of term translations in the category Rules & Scoring, while the strategies were more evenly distributed for the other two categories. No reliable conclusions can be drawn from the results in this essay as a much larger sample would be required. It may, however, be an indication of that certain translation strategies are more applicable in the translation of cricket terms and can be used as a starting point for future studies.

Stratégie de la traduction, problème du style, analyses de la réception d’À la Recherche du temps perdu en Chine" / Translation strategies, Problems of style, Analysis of In Search of Lost Time's reception in China

Zhang, Jing 30 September 2019 (has links)
This thesis aims at investigating the strategies of literary translation applied to the style of Proust's work, as well as at analyzing the potential reasons for the translation choices and their respective consequences. Through reviewing the translation and reception of Proust's literature in China, we are able to uncover the reciprocal interactions between the translation of Proust's work and the dynamic and multidimensional Chinese environment. It further reveals the interactive impact among the translation of Proust's literature, the studies of Proust’s literary concept and the Chinese literary creations. Systematically comparing the French original text of “In Search of Lost Time” with two Chinese translations, this thesis highlights the distinctive translation choices for the literary style and offers an original methodology to investigate the notion of style in translation. Taking advantage of multiple recently developed statistical methods and corpus-based translation approaches, we are capable to qualitatively and quantitatively investigate the structure of the vocabulary and the syntax in the two Chinese versions. In terms of cross-cultural studies in sociology and linguistics, we are able to detect various attitudes achieved through different translation styles, especially as regards Proust’s so-called “untranslatable” work. The cultural and linguistic values described here can probably enrich the studies and methodologies used to translate literary style.

Processus psycho-cognitif de compréhension dans l'interprétation de conférence (consécutive et simultanée) et dans la traduction : cas du français et du persan. / Psycho-cognitive process of comprehension in conference interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous) and in translation : French-Persian case

Farnoud, Esmaeel 02 June 2014 (has links)
The translation is not a linear act starting from a text source to reach the final text. The steps of the translation process (comprehension of the original text, cultural and linguistic mediation, shaping the target text) aren’t considered as a simple sequence of decoding and recoding messages. The progress of cognitive science in the last twenty years has helped feed a multidisciplinary study at the frontiers of neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, linguistics and artificial intelligence. The essential point of our thesis is to find the phase of " deverbalization " during the translation process. This is a mental process that couldn’t be understood without the contributions of cognitive science. Among the many experimental methods in the process of translation distinguishes between the method of data collection in vivo, that is to say, taken on the spot during the translation process, and the method of collection of in vitro data, is once the translator has finished translating. In this research, using a combination of the two process- oriented Approaches to study professional translation online: verbal reporting, better known as TAPs (think- aloud protocols), and Translog program for logging keyboard activity, we will examine the problems encountered in the act of translation French -Persian by our participants and the strategies used by them to solve linguistic and cultural problems.
