A passport is a personal identity document that legally protects its owner abroad and allows its entry and circulation in countries with which their country has relations. The problems of illegal immigration, terrorism, drug trafficking and others have done that countries worry about controlling the most effective way the entry and exit of foreigners. Therefore, some countries are developing techniques to confirm if the document holder is the legitimate holder. Given the strong relationship between Brazil and France, studying the terminology of passports and elaborating a glossary of terms found in it, it is a great social importance, since it can contribute to a better communication between customs authorities and also strongly contributes to sworn translators work, when they face with passports or other documents of legal area. Our project makes part of a larger project, Lextraju – O Léxico para a tradução juramentada, coordinated by Profa . Dra . Lidia Almeida Barros, at Unesp in São José do Rio Preto. Each member of Lextraju works with a different document, aiming in the future, the creation of a legal dictionary.

January 2012 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The present study aims at carrying out the analysis of a Biotechnology vocabulary subset, detecting domain neonims. To this end, our study relies on the elaboration of an Electronic Onomasiological Terminological Dictionary of the Biotechnology Neonims, searching equivalents in English and performing the data treatment in Portuguese; for which we followed the ideas proposed by Babini (2001). An onomasiological dictionary can be understood as any dictionary that allows to find a lexical or terminological unit from its semantic content. The methodology employed in the terminographic treatment and in the terminological research was guided by the CTT (Communicative Theory of Terminology), which served to handle the existing differences between the two languages studied. The main methodological and theoretical references that guided our searches, specially when it comes to neonims, word formation and the search for lexical equivalents were Alves (2009, 2008, 2007, 2001), Felber (1984), Dubuc (1985), Rondeau (1984), Alpìzar-Castillo (1995), Cabré (1993, 1999), Barros (2004), Babini (2006, 2001a, 2001). An innovative feature in the adopted model are the search possibilities. Specifically, our dictionary offers to the user the sememe (set of semes or semantic traits that compose each term in the dictionary) in the Portuguese language, as well as the equivalents in the English language. As for the electronic platform for the dictionary, we created a database in MS Access, and the information was stored in tables, what allowed a better organization and treatment of the information. Finally, we introduce the constitutive elements of a dictionary, since our objective was the elaboration of an onomasiological terminological dictionary of Biotechnology neonims. We also observed the word formation... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Garcia, Edson Roberto Bogas. January 2012 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: he main objective of this dissertation is the development of a prototype dictionary for advertising copywriters, consisting of lexicon targeted at males. The production of this work is based on the fact that research in lexicography that relates cultural aspects to the lexicon have demonstrated the importance that lexical units play in the transmission and reception of knowledge about the characteristics of a society. This observation allows considering that the lexical items belonging to a certain language determine the aspects related to beliefs, customs and, specifically in this study, the sexual characteristics of its individuals. Thus, we conducted an investigation to verify and prove the existence of a lexicon capable of revealing the possible gender differences in Brazil. For this, theoretical studies in the areas of Lexicology, Sociology and Sociolinguistics confirmed our propositions. We chose then, for the selection of our corpus, print advertisements targeted at males or in which they are the protagonists, extracted from Veja magazine, print and/or online, between the years of 2006 and 2011. This choice was made based on the hypothesis that advertising writers‟ goal is to appeal with their campaigns to an audience that‟s increasingly more specific and be able to lead, these potential consumers more accurately to a purchase. With these advertisements, we also compose the concepts that would be part of our product that we call Marketing Lexicon, which are lexical units representing a market segment. For the description and analysis of lexicon of our prototype, we use the methodology applied by Corpus Linguistics, through the program Wordsmith Tools. Within this perspective, we employ the WordList‟s tools, with the goal of providing lists of lexical items that would be used in the product and the Concord, to understand the... Take my word for it: a new approach to the problem of sincerity in the epistemology of testimony

Dewhurst, Therese January 2010 (has links)
The epistemological problem of sincerity in testimony is often approached in the following way: We, as a matter of fact, accept utterances as sincere. We do so in the face of knowledge that people lie and deceive, and yet we still count these beliefs as good beliefs. Therefore there must be some reason or argument that we can cite in order to justify our acceptance of the sincerity of the speaker. In this thesis I will argue, contra this, that there is no reason, per se, that justifies our of a speakers sincerity: this is because recognition of the obligation to accept the sincerity is a necessary condition on the possibility of communication and interpretation. In the first three of the thesis I will argue against three of the main approaches to the problem by focusing on what I believe to be the strongest accounts of each: Elizabeth Fricker's reductionism, Tyler Burge's non-reductionism, and Paul Faulkner's trust account of testimony. In the final chapter I will put forward my positive account. I will argue that it is a constitutive rule of language that a speaker be sincere, and then make the further claim, that it is a constitutive rule of interpretation that the hearer take an utterance as sincere. On my account, successful communication does not just depend on a speaker making sincere utterances, but just as importantly,, on the hearer recognising an obligation to take those utterances as being sincere.

A framework of uniform motor terminology for South African occupational therapists working with developmental motor delay

Barnard, Paula Monique 28 October 2009 (has links)
M.Sc. (Occupational Therapy), Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, 2009 / A uniform taxonomy within occupational therapy has become a recent focus of discussion and concern in the literature. This study investigated inconsistency in the literature and how South African occupational therapists use and understand terms related to motor performance in children with developmental motor delay. A three stage Delphi Technique was used to gain consensus on the association of characteristics of movement to six motor component terms. The results yielded both quantitative and qualitative data, which revealed that while there was strong consensus among the occupational therapists on some aspects of motor terminology, there is still ambiguity and overlap of understanding. This is reflected in a worrying inconsistency of the description of these terms in the literature and how occupational therapists use the terms in clinical practice. A Framework of Uniform Motor Terminology was developed based on the results of the Delphi Technique.

Measuring the Reading Level of LDS Materials: A Supplement to the Dale Word List

Stahle, Linda 01 January 1981 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to supplement the Dale word list with a list of terms that are familiar to most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and thus increase the precision of the Dale-Chall readability formula when it is applied to LDS materials. The Dale word list consists of 3,000 words that are familiar to 80 percent of fourth graders. The procedure involved identifying non-Dale words that occur frequently in LDS church publications and testing them on LDS fourth graders in a three-alternative multiple-choice format.Of the 850 words tested, 249 were identified correctly by 80 percent of the LDS fourth graders tested and could, therefore, constitute a valid addition to the Dale word list when the Dale-Chall formula is used to test materials prepared for a Mormon audience.

Analyzing a Case Study: Metacognitive Aspects of a Vocabulary Instructional Approach

Moore, Bridget 04 January 2023 (has links)
Vocabulary instructional tools can be used in the science classroom to increase students' understanding of course terminology. This thesis used a case study approach to explore the Etymological Approach to Learning Biological Terminology [EALBT] used by an instructor to ease access to university-level terms. The results indicate the existence of five unique approaches to the EALBT and that a number of metacognitive elements can also be integrated into this instructional method. The conclusions include that university science courses can require more self-guided learning when compared to high school science. Likewise, metacognition can develop skills in thinking and learning control processes that could lead students to become increasingly apt at accessing course material, including terminology.

Development and evaluation of methods for structured recording of heart murmur findings using SNOMED CT® post-coordination

Green, Julie Meadows 20 December 2004 (has links)
Objective: Structured recording of examination findings, such as heart murmurs, is important for effective retrieval and analysis of data. Our study proposes two models for post-coordinating murmur findings and evaluates their ability to record murmurs found in clinical records. Methods: Two models were proposed for post-coordinating murmur findings: the Concept-dependent Attributes model and the Interprets/Has interpretation model. A micro-nomenclature was created based on each model by using the subset and extension mechanisms provided for by the SNOMED-CT® framework. Within each micro-nomenclature a partonomy of cardiac cycle timing values was generated. In order for each model to be capable of representing clinical data, a mechanism for handling range values was developed. One hundred murmurs taken from clinical records were entered into two systems that were built based on each model to enter and display murmur data. Results: Both models were able to record all 100 murmur findings; both required the addition of the same number of concepts into their respective micro-nomenclatures. However, the Interprets/Has interpretation model required twice the storage space for recording murmurs. Conclusion: We found little difference in the requirements for implementation of either model. In fact, data stored using these models could be easily inter-converted. This will allow system developers to choose a model based on their own preferences. If at a later date a method is chosen for modeling within SNOMED-CT, the data can be converted to conform if necessary. / Master of Science
