Abstract This article is a presentation of a brief cultural glossary of Northern Sotho cooking terms. The glossary is mainly composed of names for utensils and ingredients, and action words for the processes involved in the preparation of cultural dishes. It also contains names of dishes tied to some idiomatic expressions in a way eliciting cultural experiences that can lead to an under-standing of indigenous knowledge systems. The article seeks to explore ways of capturing cultural glossaries to feed into the national dictionary corpora by using a case-study approach to investigate the processes that led to the generation of this specific school-based project. A number of issues that surfaced in this project, can possibly serve as models for the collection of authentic glossaries that can support dictionary making in African languages.

Class of 2006 Abstract / Objectives: To develop a glossary of words useful to pharmacists when counseling patients in Spanish and assess the usefulness of this glossary. Methods: This was a descriptive study using a questionnaire to assess the usefulness of a Spanish glossary developed to aid in counseling Spanish speaking patients. Pharmacy students from the College of Pharmacy were targeted to provide a formative evaluation by filling out a survey to evaluate the Spanish glossary. A mean usefulness score was calculated to determine if the Spanish glossary was useful. The data was divided into two groups based on the participants’ knowledge of the Spanish language to see if there was a difference between the groups. In addition, categorical descriptive data was analyzed. Results: The groups were very similar. There was no difference in how the groups rated the glossary. Over all, both groups liked rated the glossary highly. Most people had no suggestions for adding any vocabulary, and few changes were suggested. Conclusions: A Spanish glossary organized into sections on a single sheet of paper was found to be favorably rated in its usefulness by people with varying levels of Spanish knowledge.

Cada membro do Lextraju trabalha com um tipo de documento, visando no futuro, à criação de um dicionário jurídico. / A passport is a personal identity document that legally protects its owner abroad and allows its entry and circulation in countries with which their country has relations. The problems of illegal immigration, terrorism, drug trafficking and others have done that countries worry about controlling the most effective way the entry and exit of foreigners. Therefore, some countries are developing techniques to confirm if the document holder is the legitimate holder. Given the strong relationship between Brazil and France, studying the terminology of passports and elaborating a glossary of terms found in it, it is a great social importance, since it can contribute to a better communication between customs authorities and also strongly contributes to sworn translators work, when they face with passports or other documents of legal area. Our project makes part of a larger project, Lextraju – O Léxico para a tradução juramentada, coordinated by Profa . Dra . Lidia Almeida Barros, at Unesp in São José do Rio Preto. Each member of Lextraju works with a different document, aiming in the future, the creation of a legal dictionary.

In the master thesis a terminological glossary of energy economics was developed. Actuality of the research is determined by the necessity to compile a logically structured glossary of the energy economy, corresponding to the current developmentsin this industry, and very fragmented information relating to it. The object of the research is the German-language terminological units of the subject area energy economy (Gr.: ENERGIEWIRTSCHAFT) with translation into Russian. Theoretical significance: extensive materials related to the problems of the classification of terminology and the development of a glossarywas analyzed and systematized, a sequential algorithm for working on its compilationwas also described. Practical significance is based on the fact that the developed glossary performs both informational and educational functions, so it can be used in working with students of language specialties in practical classes on the translation of special texts. / В магистерской диссертации разработан терминологический глоссарий экономики энергетики. Актуальность темы определяется необходимостью составления логически структурированного глоссария экономики энергетики, соответствующего актуальному развитию данной отрасли, и весьма разрозненной информацией, относящейся к ней. Объектом исследования являются немецкоязычные терминологические единицы предметной области ENERGIEWIRTSCHAFT/ ЭКОНОМИКА ЭНЕРГЕТИКИ с переводом на русский язык. Теоретическая значимость: в работе произведены анализ и систематизация обширного материала, связанного с проблемами классификации терминологии и разработки глоссария, а также описан последовательный алгоритм работы над его составлением. Практическая значимость основана на том, что разработанный глоссарий выполняет как информационную, так и учебную функции, поэтому он может быть использован в работе со студентами языковых специальностей на практических занятиях по переводу специальных текстов.

Магистерская работа посвящена систематизации терминологической системы молекулярной генетики агрономии и зоотехнии и созданию англо-русского глоссария терминологии данной области знания. В работе представлена теоретическая база исследования, включающая публикации в области терминоведения и терминографии; проведена классификация терминологической системы и описан алгоритм разработки глоссария. / The master's thesis is devoted to systematization of terminological system of molecular genetics in agronomy and zootechnics and development of English-Russian glossary of terminology in this field. The paper presents the theoretical basis of the study, including publications in the field of terminology and terminography; a classification of the terminological system is made and the algorithm for developing a glossary is described.

Two new online products are available to the international tree-ring community. The Bibliography of Dendrochronology (published online in February 2003) currently has 10,000 references and is the world’s largest online bibliography specializing in tree-ring research. In March 2004, the Glossary of Dendrochronology was made available and is a searchable database of 351 terms and definitions in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. Both databases result from the collaboration of numerous tree-ring scientists worldwide.

A legendagem de programas audiovisuais tem merecido atenção renovada na área da pesquisa em Tradução, dado o incremento de acesso de filmes e seriados pela internet. Ao ocupar o profissional e também o leigo, que traduz legendas por hobby e na condição de fã, a legendagem de séries televisivas norte-americanas tem gerado materiais interessantes para estudo, também no âmbito da Terminologia. Mesmo com o crescente número de séries que usam terminologias específicas como pano de fundo (FROMM, 2011a), como as que se ocupam de temas médicos ou jurídicos, ainda não há muitos estudos sobre essa terminologia em tradução. As séries de ficção de tema sobrenatural, como as que tratam do universo de vampiros, lobisomens e bruxas, ou de ficção científica, por sua vez, parecem trazer um vocabulário com elementos bastante semelhantes às terminologias “tradicionais”, instaurando um vocabulário próprio relacionado a toda uma complexidade conceitual, pois constroem realidades particulares, comparáveis às realidades científicas. Nesse universo de discurso, segundo Barbosa (2005, 2006a, 2007, 2009), determinadas unidades lexicais funcionariam tanto como vocábulos quanto como termos. Levando isso em consideração, conhecer melhor esse tipo de material textual e, em meio a ele, as especificidades de sua “terminologia”, pode ajudar os tradutores brasileiros a se inserirem neste mercado de trabalho ou, ainda, a se estabelecerem como aqueles com maior familiaridade com a linguagem, com o vocabulário e com a tradução do “mundo das séries”. Este trabalho lidará, então, com um vocabulário não prontamente considerado como especializado por algumas correntes da Terminologia. Seu objetivo é propor bases teóricas e metodológicas para a elaboração de um glossário cujo público-alvo são os tradutores. No entanto, esse tipo de obra se baseia, por sua natureza, em procedimentos terminográficos para a compilação de um repertório de termos sem a pretensão de exaustividade (KRIEGER; FINATTO, 2004). Tomando como referencial teórico a Etnoterminologia, a Terminologia Cultural e a Terminologia Textual, aliadas a recursos e princípios da Linguística de Corpus, é oferecido como produto final um protótipo de glossário para tradutores de legendas do inglês para o português, utilizando como corpus os seriados True Blood e The Vampire Diaries em inglês e em português. Tal corpus foi analisado por meio do programa de análise lexical AntConc e de suas ferramentas, principalmente Word List, Keyword List e Concordance. Como parte do protótipo de glossário, foram desenhadas árvores de domínio para cada um dos seriados e elaboradas 18 fichas terminológicas como amostra. Nessas fichas, foram registradas informações encontradas no corpus sobre os termos selecionados, bem como especificidades lexicais e gramaticais desses textos. Ao final, foi possível mostrar que as unidades lexicais encontradas nos seriados de tema sobrenatural, por mais que se pareçam com vocábulos, estão em função de termo quando atualizadas nesse universo de discurso. Essa função designa a essas unidades lexicais um significado muito especializado, específico a esse contexto. Além disso, demostrou-se a produtividade de se adotar uma abordagem terminográfica ao universo de discurso dos seriados de tema sobrenatural. / The subtitling of audiovisual programs has received renewed attention in the area of translation research, due to the increase in the access to films and TV series through the Internet. As it engages professionals as well as laymen, who subtitle as a hobby and as fans, the subtitling of North American TV series has generated interesting materials for study, also within Terminology. Even with the increasing number of TV series that use specific terminology as background (FROMM, 2011a), such as those dealing with medical or legal issues, there are not many studies on this terminology in translation yet. Fictional TV series of supernatural theme, such as those dealing with the world of vampires, werewolves and witches, or of science fiction, in their turn, seem to bring vocabulary with elements quite similar to the “traditional” terminologies, setting up their own vocabulary related to a whole conceptual complexity, as they build particular realities, comparable to scientific realities. In this universe of discourse, according to Barbosa (2005, 2006a, 2007, 2009), certain lexical units would work as words and as terms as well. Considering this, knowing this kind of textual material better and, through it, the specifics of its “terminology”, may help Brazilian translators to insert themselves in this market, or even to establish themselves as the ones more familiar with the language, with the vocabulary and the translation of the “world of TV series”. This thesis will deal then with a vocabulary not readily considered as specialized by some Terminology theories. Its goal is to propose theoretical and methodological basis for the development of a glossary whose target audience is the translators. However, this type of work is based, in its nature, on terminographic procedures for the compilation of a term directory without aiming at exhaustiveness (KRIEGER; FINATTO, 2004). Taking as a theoretical framework Etnoterminology, Cultural Terminology and Textual Terminology, combined with resources and principles of Corpus Linguistics, it is offered as a final product a glossary prototype for subtitlers from English to Portuguese, using as a corpus the series True Blood and The Vampire Diaries in English and Portuguese. This corpus was analyzed using the lexical analysis program AntConc and its tools, especially Word List, Keyword List and Concordance. As part of the glossary prototype, domain trees were designed for each of the series and 18 terminological record sheets were produced as sample. In these sheets, information on the selected terms found in the corpus was recorded, as well as lexical and grammatical peculiarities of these texts. At the end, it was possible to show that the lexical units found in series of supernatural theme, no matter how much they might look like words, are in the function of terms when inserted in this universe of discourse. This function designates a very specialized meaning to these lexical units, specific to this context. In addition, the productivity of adopting a terminographic approach to the universe of discourse of TV series of supernatural theme was demonstrated.

Esta tese contém contribuições para a organização de um glossário nominal das poesias de Manuel Bandeira. Procede a um levantamento de todos os substantivos e adjetivos presentes em sua obra poética. Além de identificar os lexemas, organizando-os por meio de verbetes e documentando os significados de cada um, traz todas as ocorrências encontradas nos poemas. Refere-se à relação entre a lexicografia e a pesquisa literária. Busca demonstrar que o contexto influencia na análise gramatical, definindo um vocábulo como substantivo ou adjetivo. Destaca também a importância dos estudos de lexicografia literária. / This theory focuses the nominal lexicon in Manuel Bandeiras poetries. This study proceeds a rising of all the nouns and present adjectives in his poetic work. Besides identifying the lexems, organizing them through entries and documenting the meanings of each word, it brings all of the occurrences found in the researched poetic context. This study refers, likewise, to the relationship between the lexicography and the study of the literature. Search to demonstrate that the context influences in the grammatical conjuncture, defining a word as noun or adjective. And, as last objective, detaches the importance of the studies of literary lexicography.
