Content analysis of recruitment videotapes from institutions utilizing enrollment management systems

Keen, Melissa H. 07 November 2008 (has links)
Recruitment materials such as videotapes help students to form expectations about the college experience. Students' expectations have been linked to retention. Research has indicated that students whose pre-matriculation expectations are not consistent with the reality they experience in college are more likely to drop out. The frequent use and socializing effect of recruitment videos suggests that determining the messages the videos communicate is an important matter to address. This study analyzed the messages of 30 college recruitment videos in regards to four content areas: academic, social, personal, and institutional characteristics. The content analysis compared the messages from public and private institutions, as well as the messages from small, medium, and large institutions. The narrative and images in the videos were categorized as relating to one of the four content areas. The frequency and duration of content devoted to each area was analyzed. The actual messages communicated about each content area were also analyzed. Each video in the nationally representative sample of four-year institutions was obtained from an institution with an existing enrollment management system. The enrollment management philosophy includes a commitment to depicting institutions in an honest an accurate fashion. Since enrollment management systems were designed to stabilize enrollments, examining how recruitment videos depict college to prospective students is an important step in assessing the effectiveness of the enrollment management system. Results of the content analysis for duration and frequency indicated that videos emphasized personal issues. Academic issues received the second greatest attention, followed by institutional characteristics. Social issues received the least emphasis. Although very few differences among institutional types were found, large, public institutions devoted the most emphasis to personal issues. The analysis of messages revealed that college provides students with a great deal of practical, hands-on learning. The purpose of attending college was characterized as career preparation. Narrative indicated that academics were challenging,; however, this characterization was not supported by images in the videos. Images indicated that studying is a casual activity, and that students receive support, often through one-on-one instruction and interaction with faculty. Another disconnect between narrative and images was found in the characterization of student diversity. Narrative indicated institutional commitment to diversity, while images displayed a majority of racially homogenous social groups. Finally, institutions were pictured as sites of activity and movement. Students were frequently depicted walking on campus, characterizing them as busy and purposeful. Institutions would be well advised to case their recruitment videos on data gathered through institutional research. By presenting accurate messages about their respective campuses, institutions would help prospective student form realistic expectations about the college experience. / Master of Arts

On the Relevance of Temporal Information in Multimedia Forensics Applications in the Age of A.I.

Montibeller, Andrea 24 January 2024 (has links)
The proliferation of multimedia data, including digital images and videos, has led to an increase in their misuse, such as the unauthorized sharing of sensitive content, the spread of fake news, and the dissemination of misleading propaganda. To address these issues, the research field of multimedia forensics has developed tools to distinguish genuine multimedia from fakes and identify the sources of those who share sensitive content. However, the accuracy and reliability of multimedia forensics tools are threatened by recent technological advancements in new multimedia processing software and camera devices. For example, source attribution involves attributing an image or video to a specific camera device, which is crucial for addressing privacy violations, cases of revenge porn, and instances of child pornography. These tools exploit forensic traces unique to each camera’s manufacturing process, such as Photo Response Non-Uniformity (PRNU). Nevertheless, image and video processing transformations can disrupt the consistency of PRNU, necessitating the development of new methods for its recovery. Conversely, to distinguish genuine multimedia from fakes, AI-based image and video forgery localization methods have also emerged. However, they constantly face challenges from new, more sophisticated AI-forgery techniques and are hindered by factors like AI-aided post-processing and, in the case of videos, lower resolutions, and stronger compression. This doctoral study investigates the relevance of exploiting temporal information during the parameters estimation used to reverse complex spatial transformations for source attribution, and video forgery localization in low-resolution H.264 post-processed inpainted videos. Two novel methods will be presented that model the set of parameters involved in reversing in-camera and out-camera complex spatial transformations applied to images and videos as time series, improving source attribution accuracy and computational efficiency. Regarding video inpainting localization, a novel dataset of videos inpainted and post-processed with Temporal Consistency Networks will be introduced, and we will present our solution to improve video inpainting localization by taking into account spatial and temporal inconsistencies at dense optical flow level. The research presented in this dissertation has resulted in several publications that contribute to the field of multimedia forensics, addressing challenges related to source attribution and video forgery localization.

Applications of Charged Aromatic Species in Electronics

Prindle, Claudia January 2024 (has links)
Charged organic species are ubiquitous throughout organic chemistry. They are ideal ascomponents in organic electronics, and are common as transition states or intermediates in many organic transformations. This dissertation details the investigation of the effect of external electric fields on reactions with charged transition states, as well as the incorporation of triarylmethylium and triangulenium cations as components in single-molecule and organic electronics. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the scanning tunneling microscope break junction (STM-BJ) technique, which is used as a tool to assess the effect of external electric fields on reaction rate and the performance of single-molecule devices. In this chapter, the different design criteria for molecules used in both single-molecule and optoelectronic devices are discussed. Chapter 2 evaluates the effect of electric fields on two classes of reactions with charged transition states – the Menshutkin reaction and the Chapman rearrangement. Chapter 3 describes triarylmethylium and triangulenium dyes as single-molecule devices, and how their conductance can be tuned through different pendant substituents via Fano resonances. Chapter 4 details an ongoing project that incorporates triangulenium cores to yield a modular donor-acceptor system that shows tunable quenching of emission. Finally, Chapter 5 chronicles the progress of our TikTok account called @IvyLeagueScience and outlines the success criteria for using short-form videos as a way of conducting scientific outreach.

A Descriptive Analysis of the Most Viewed YouTube Videos Related to Teen Pregnancy

Massey, Rachel January 2024 (has links)
The United States teen birth rate has been declining since 1991, but the teen pregnancy rate remains one of the highest in the developed world outside the former Soviet Bloc. There is no current national strategy to implement comprehensive sexuality education in schools, and states have varying sex education and abortion policies. There are various effective programs designed to prevent teen pregnancies that share common characteristics of effective programs. Given the widespread reach and number of users, YouTube has the potential to be an education resource for teen pregnancy prevention. At the time of this study, there were no studies describing the content of videos that relate to teen pregnancy. This study is intended to fill this gap in the literature. YouTube was searched with the key words “teen pregnancy,” and the results were sorted by view count. The most widely viewed 100 videos meeting inclusion criteria were included in the study. The most widely viewed videos received 434,423,558 cumulative views. These videos were coded for their source, format, and the inclusion of content variables. The content variables were also organized to fit Kirby’s model of characteristics of effective programs. The majority of videos were sources and formats that depicted teens’ experience with pregnancy, including documentaries, reality TV programs, talk shows, and vlogs uploaded by consumers. Notably, there were no videos uploaded by professionals. The content most covered in the videos were the pregnancy outcome, how the teen mother found out she was pregnant, the teen mother’s reaction to the pregnancy, and the involvement of various family members. YouTube is an opportunity to reach a larger number of viewers, but the teen pregnancy videos in the study are missing key elements of teen pregnancy that are present in the literature, like the relationship between poverty and teen pregnancy, teen abortion rates, and repeat pregnancies. The videos were also lacking in elements of Kirby’s characteristics of effective programs. Recommendations for health education practice include the need for professionals to utilize the true stories of teen pregnancies and popular influencers to create engaging, accurate content.

Under China's Video Platform: Exploring Collaboration Between Official Media And Citizen Journalism In The Field of Propaganda

XU, XINSHUO January 2024 (has links)
With the rapid growth in the number of new media platforms in China, a large number of Internet users have been turned into citizen journalism accounts. With the digital transformation of official media, many citizen journalism accounts are often pulled into news production by official media to co-produce content. On the Chinese Internet, citizen journalism not only plays the role of challenging and influencing agenda-setting and public opinion, but also takes on the task of propagating ideology and values. This thesis explored this phenomenon of journalistic practice by using generic news frames and propaganda theories as theoretical foundations. Meanwhile, this study used mainly quantitative content analysis as research method, exploring the characteristics of news videos produced by Chinese citizen journalism accounts in collaboration with official media, and what propaganda techniques were used to help legitimize authoritarian rule. This study examined 432 collaborative videos on bilibili published by CCTV between 2020 and 2023. The findings suggest that collaborative videos tend to produce soft news with positive human interest and morality frames, while negative news mainly targets foreign countries' conflicts. Furthermore, collaborative videos mainly use soft propaganda and public opinion guidance to disseminate values and ideologies that are in line with the national interest and lead the audience to support the CPC and the government's political governance, which legitimizes authoritarian rule. These results illustrate how Chinese citizen journalism in the propaganda field contributes to the propaganda strategy of the party and the government, how it has been used to legitimize authoritarian rule, and why its characteristics are significantly different from those of the Western scholars.

'n Missiologiese evaluering van 'n aantal musiekvideos

De Bruyn, Jacob Philippus Johannes 11 1900 (has links)
Hierdie videos speel veral 'n vemame rol by die jeug as sub-kultuurgroep. / Missiology / D.Th. (Missiology)
