The role of women in decision-making positions : the case of Israeli sport organisations

Betzer-Tayar, Moran January 2013 (has links)
This thesis analyses discourses about the roles and barriers to access for women to decision-making positions in Israeli sport organisations. In particular it focuses on the exploration of discourses of masculinity and femininity that underpin the relatively recent construction of Israel society and the institutions of sport within it. It is observed that for the most part, Israeli sport organisations are governed by men and have served the interests of forms of hegemonic masculinity. In order to understand and explore the social construction of these gendered discourses in Israeli sport, two innovative and significant policy initiatives toward gender equity in sport were explored through the perceptions and discourses of key actors. These include the establishment of a Volleyball Academy for Young Talented Girls (VAYTG) and the creation of the National Project for Women and Sport (NPWS). The theoretical framework for this thesis is informed by poststructuralist feminism, which provided an alternative way to understand and analyse voices of the (predominantly female) 'other' and thus to explore the historical contextual construction of current discourses of masculinity within Israeli sport organisations and society as a whole. The process of narrative revisions and production of gendered knowledge revealed how discourses produce and reinforce gender inequities in Israeli society, such as the discourse of militarisation or the unique political affiliation system in the sporting arena which continue to implicitly exclude women (and some men) from gaining access to leadership positions in sport organisations. Within this theoretical frame, Critical Discourse Analysis was employed as a methodological approach to analyse how female and male interviewees, all considered to be 'insiders' within their organisations, explained the process of the construction of gendered roles and barriers. Included in the interview data was also the auto-ethnographical accounts of the author, who was a primary actor in the process of developing policy in the two case study initiatives addressed. Dominant discourses of femininity (such as the discourse of sisterhood and of the processes of mentoring), and of masculinity (and how these promote uniformity) were identified as mechanisms for reproducing the gendered reality of sport leadership in Israel. The implication of a critical theoretical approach is that it should be emancipatory in its ambitions and impact, and the study is intended to contribute to enhancing the understanding of how discourse not only reflects but also creates barriers and opportunities so that the construction of such barriers can be challenged in progressive policy discourses.

Foffová, Lenka January 2014 (has links)
Title: Assessment of EMG Activity of Selected Muscles during Compensatory Exercises for Volleyball Players Aim of the thesis: The aim of the thesis is to compare muscle activity of two different types of resistance - the manual resistance of the practitioner and the Thera-Band resistance - during diagonal one flexion and extension patterns PNF for upper extremity. And then consider whether there is a possibility to use the method of PNF in a combination with Thera- Band during volleyball players' compensatory exercise. Methodology: The thesis has a character of a case study. Using surface electromyography on five probands, we recorded the electrical activity of musculus biceps brachii, musculus deltoideus pars posterior, musculus trapezius pars caudalis, and their antagonists. The electrical activity was recorded during diagonal one flexion and extension patterns PNF for upper extremity, using two types of resistance (the manual resistance of the practitioner and the Thera-Band resistance). Results: During diagonal one extension pattern, the activity of musculus trapezius pars caudalis and musculus deltoideus pars posterior is comparable with the manual resistance of the practitioner and the Thera-Band resistance. Results indicated that m. deltoideus pars posterior and m. trapezius pars caudalis...

Efeito da suplementação com magnésio no desempenho físico em atletas de voleibol profissional / Effect of magnesium supplementation in performance in elite volleyball players

Setaro, Luciana 11 November 2009 (has links)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of magnesium supplementation in physical performance of male volleyball players (n = 25). The athletes with respectively, 17.42 ± 1.5 years and 17.85 ± 1.0 years, were randomly assigned to an experimental (n = 12) and a control group (n = 13) in a double-blind 4-week supplementation protocol: the supplemented group received 350 mg Mg/d (2 capsules of 250 mg MgO/d) and the control 350 mg/d of maltodextrin. The analyses were performed before and after the supplementation. The Mg intake was evaluated through six-day food records with the NutriQuanti software. Blood and 24h urine samples were obtained CK and urine, plasma and erythrocyte Mg determination. MaxVO2, lactate, vertical jump-squat jump (SJ), counter movement jump (CMJ), counter movement jump arm (CMJA), and isokinetic dynamometry of knee`s extensor and flexor muscles were determined for the evaluation of physical performance. All athletes (n = 25) had inadequate dietary magnesium intake according to the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI). On the other hand the biochemical parameters of Mg status were not different between the groups. At t = 4 weeks the Mg-supplemented group, but not the control, showed lower plasma concentration when compared to values at t = 0, and CMJ and CMJA heights as well. When the supplemented and the control groups were compared at t = 4 weeks, the CMJA height of the supplemented group was higher than that from the control (p = 0.03). These results show an increase of the athletes performance with Mg supplementation in the conditions of this study.

VAST: A Human-Centered, Domain-Independent Video Analysis Support Tool

Nordt, Marlo Faye 2008 December 1900 (has links)
Providing computer-aided support for human analysis of videos has been a battle of extremes. Powerful solutions exist, but they tend to be domain-specific and complex. The user-friendly, simple systems provide little analysis support beyond basic media player functionality. We propose a human-centered, domain-independent solution between these two points. Our proposed model and system, VAST, is based on our experience in two diverse video analysis domains: science and athletics. Multiple-perspective location metadata is used to group related video clips together. Users interact with these clip groups through a novel interaction paradigm ? views. Each view provides a different context by which users can judge and evaluate the events that are captured by the video. Easy conversion between views allows the user to quickly switch between contexts. The model is designed to support a variety of user goals and expertise with minimal producer overhead. To evaluate our model, we developed a system prototype and conducted several rounds of user testing requiring the analysis of volleyball practice videos. The user tasks included: foreground analysis, ambiguous identification, background analysis, and planning. Both domain novices and experts participated in the study. User feedback, participant performance, and system logs were used to evaluate the system. VAST successfully supported a variety of problem solving strategies employed by participants during the course of the study. Participants had no difficulty handling multiple views (and resulting multiple video clips) simultaneously opened in the workspace. The capability to view multiple related clips at one time was highly regarded. In all tasks, except the open-ended portion of the background analysis, participants performed well. However, performance was not significantly influenced by domain expertise. Participants had a favorable opinion of the system?s intuitiveness, ease of use, enjoyability, and aesthetics. The majority of participants stated a desire to use VAST outside of the study, given the opportunity.

Vaštakaitė, Simona 16 May 2006 (has links)
The object of the study is young women's volleyball players' psychomotoric reaction. The work problem - the psychomotoric reaction changes in one-year workout cycle of young women's volleyball players - is being seen now as a rather new and almost unexplored both in theory and practice. The purpose of the work is to explore possibilities of establishing and developing psychomotoric factors of young women's volleyball players in one-year workout cycle. In order to solve this problem, the following tasks were set: · To explore motion velocity factors of young women's volleyball players right and left hands, depending on the complexity of exercises; · To compare specific features both of right and left hand psychomotoric reactions of the young women's volleyball players; · To evaluate changes in response time and motion velocity during one-year workout cycle. · To evaluate strategies of motion performance in respect of velocity. We have carried out a study with players from the Lithuanian young women's volleyball players' team who are preparing themselves for the European Volleyball Championship of the year 2007. In the first study, there were 17 members of the Lithuanian young women's volleyball players' team who participated in this research, and in the second study - 15 members. The age of young players ranges from 15 to 16 years. The average age of persons under the study (young women's volleyball players) during the first stage of the study is that of 15.58±0.12 years. / The objective of this study was to build, implement and evaluate, with teachers of Physical Education of primary education II, a proposal to teaching of volleyball in the three dimensions of content: conceptual, procedural and atitudinal. A structured literature review is based on themes: education, citizenship, Physical Education school, teaching the sport and dimensions of the content of volleyball. For the development of search was used method of search-action, and held eight meetings over four months, with the participation of four teachers. The results obtained were discussed in the perspective of working conditions, in the why and what for teaching sport (volleyball), technology and sports performance, in the dimensions of the content and features, expectations and participation of students. It was found that, in some schools, the working conditions, in relation to the physical space, the available material, the devaluation of the Physical Education or even the suspicion on the part of teachers from other areas and the direction, present themselves as obstacles to the development of this component curriculum. However, it was observed that the teachers participating successfully develop a quality education, contributing to the resizing of the importance of Physical Education in the environment of formal education. It was confirmed the possibility of developing lessons that may go beyond procedural dimension, facilitating the conceptual approach of the dimensions and atitudinais of volleyball. Moreover, it was for the effective participation of students, but it has only been due to the provision of teachers in struturing as appropriate their classes, studying, intended time for preparation of activities and offering diverse strategies that stimulated the involvement of students.
