Reis, Lucas Bond January 2015 (has links)
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas, Programa de Pós-Graduação em História, Florianópolis, 2015. / Made available in DSpace on 2016-10-19T13:13:46Z (GMT). The proposal of this research is to contribute for a better comprehension of Southern Jê groups historic trajectory in Santa Catarina by means of researches in the city of Alfredo Wagner. Therefore, we engaged a revision on archaeological, anthropologic and ethnohistoric literature on these Southern Jê groups, as well as we developed archaeological prospections and excavation, and then technologic analysis on lithic and ceramic vestiges. In this text, we present in a inedited way the results of these researches placed at Tobias Wagner archaeological site, a context composed by pit houses, nestled in Lomba Alta. Using the dates and information compiled, we reflected and rendered problematic on the Southern Jê occupation in a diachronic perspective and in different ways: intrasite, local, microregional, and regional scales. We shall emphasize that this study was directed using an approach that aims to comprehend indigenous population as complete historic people, agents of their own history, and that we believe these historic trajectories are originated from specific relations established with and at a determined territory. In this way, we present suggestions about the Southern Jê occupation process by means of Zedeño?s proposal (1997; 2008) on the history of territorial formation, as well as on Braudel?s ([1958] 2009) and Sahlins? ([1985] 1999) comprehensions on what concerns the concepts of duration and change, and yet, on Barth?s ([1969] 1998) perceptions about social frontiers and ethnic groups.

A Methodology of Rewriting Orchestral Reductions for Piano

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: Numerous orchestral reductions for piano are plagued by cumbersome passages that impede pianists from delivering phrases with flow and elegance. The vocal works of George Frideric Handel (1685&ndash;1759) and Richard Wagner (1813&ndash;1883) are among the more unwieldy of these. While arrangers of the piano vocal scores by these two composers admirably include as much orchestration as possible, their efforts often result in writing that is not idiomatic for the piano. The frustrating difficulties in the orchestral reductions of Handel&rsquo;s &ldquo;Empio, dirò, tu sei&rdquo; (Giulio Cesare), his Messiah chorus &ldquo; For unto us a child is born&rdquo; as well as Wagner&rsquo;s aria &ldquo;Du bist der Lenz&rdquo; (Die Walküre) all plead for a new, fresh arrangement for the working pianist. Concerning itself with the formation of one&rsquo;s hands, stamina preservation, and the need to give proper support to the singers, this paper makes examples of these three pieces to document and justify the steps and techniques one may take to customize both these and any variety of orchestral reductions. With great emphasis on the methodology of rewriting operatic and choral orchestral reductions, this document presents newly arranged note&ndash;for&ndash;note piano vocal scores of the above arias and chorus. By customizing and rewriting complex scores, our partners benefit by singing above the identical accompaniment every time. It is the intent that the collaborative pianist can apply these methods to future rewrites, with the result of producing scores that are conducive to proper technique and flow. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2012

Redeeming the Betrayer: Elgar’s Portrayal of Judas in the Apostles

Taycher, Ryan 12 1900 (has links)
Despite its generally agreed importance, very little has been written about The Apostles. Even among the extant publications that address The Apostles, scholars have focused on its history and development, its reception, or analytical descriptions of its surface themes. The aim of this study will therefore be to provide neither a biography of Elgar, nor an account of the genesis of the work, but to analyze The Apostles in a manner that will achieve a deeper understanding of the oratorio. Chapter 1 explores the complexities that surround Judas and the different ways in which he was perceived throughout history. Then, through my analysis of the surface motives in Chapter 2 and their significance in relation to the large-scale harmonic structure in Chapter 3, I will suggest that Elgar does not denigrate Judas as the betrayer of Christ in The Apostles, but rather depicts him as a tragic yet crucial figure in achieving the redemption of mankind, and through this Judas himself is redeemed.

The Intimacy of Death: Mahler’s Dramatic Narration in Kindertotenlieder

Strange, AnnaGrace 05 1900 (has links)
There has been relatively little scholarship to date on Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder. The writings about this song cycle that do exist primarily focus on the disparate nature of the poems and justify Kindertotenlieder as a cycle by highlighting various musical connections between the songs, such as keys and motivic continuity. Mahler, however, has unified the cycle in a much more complex and sophisticated way. His familiarity with Wagner’s music and methods, and his mastery of the human voice and orchestral voices allowed him to weave a dramatic grief-laden narrative.

Mouvoir dans l'espace: une esthétique musico-poétique chez Debussy et Mallarmé

Bowman, Daniel Stewart 12 June 2013 (has links)
The relationship between music and poetry dramatically changed in France during the nineteenth century.  Music took a prominent place in artistic life, and certain figures of the era argued for its superiority over poetry.  Richard Wagner convinced many artists of the time of the need to subsume poetry into music for the sake of creating a Gesamtkunstwerk, or a total work of art.  The result of this dialogue can best be examined by studying the relationship between the composer Claude Debussy and the poet Stéphane Mallarmé.  In response to the challenge issued by Wagner, Mallarmé argued strongly for the place of poetry.  Though he argued against Wagnerism specifically, Mallarmé admired the expressive capabilities of music, which is a constant presence in his poetry.  Debussy found his greatest source of inspiration from the poets of Mallarmé's generation.  Rather than following the example of Wagner and other Romantic-era composers, Debussy saw poets as the avant-garde, and sought to capture their poetry in his music.   Both of these figures, inspired by the relationship between music and poetry, produced very forward-thinking works, and serve as transitional figures for their respective arts.  Each using techniques inspired by the other\'s art, Debussy and Mallarmé both make use of non-traditional forms, a sense of movement, and a profound use of silence in order to best express the Ideal. / Master of Arts

GALVANNEALING OF DUAL PHASE STEELS

Asgari, Moslehabadi Hamed 04 1900 (has links)
<p>The high strength and ductility of dual phase (DP) steels makes them ideal for use in the automotive industry. However, to be used in automotive exposed parts galvanizing (GI) and galvannealing (GA) processes are essential to provide corrosion protection. Galvannealing of dual phase steels has three major steps: i) heat treatment of the steel strip to obtain a suitable substrate microstructure and reduce iron oxides at the substrate surface ii) dipping of the steel strip in the zinc bath to obtain a soft and ductile metallic zinc coating on the steel and iii) heat treatment of the coated substrate in the galvannealing furnace after removal from the zinc bath to form an Fe-Zn intermetallic coating on the steel.</p> <p>The major challenges in galvannealing of dual phase steels are selective oxidation of the alloying elements used in DP steels such as Mn which may result in poor galvannealed coatings, and galvannealing time and temperature that can affect the microstructure and formation kinetics of galvannealed coating. Both of these issues have been investigated in this research using three industrial steel substrates: EDDS (Extra Deep Drawing Steel), CMn (Carbon Manganese) and DP590 (Dual Phase). The concentration of carbon, manganese and some other alloying elements was different in these substrates.</p> <p>The effect of process atmosphere oxygen partial pressure on oxidation was determined for all experimental steels at dew point (dp) -30°C using a N2-5%H2 process atmosphere. The steel chemistry and oxygen partial pressure of the process atmosphere affected oxide thickness and morphology. For all alloys the lowest oxygen partial pressure process atmosphere resulted in the highest concentration and thickest oxide layer of Mn at the surface of dual phase steel (DP590). Also, the lowest segregation of Mn and thinnest oxide layer of Mn at the surface was obtained for the EDDS steel. The predominant oxide morphology observed at the surface of the DP590 steel comprised large oxide nodules or thick oxide films with irregular shaped/faceted nodules whereas the other two steels had an oxide morphology that generally comprised spherical cap shaped nodules at grain boundaries.</p> <p>Four galvannealing times (10, 20, 30 and 40 s) and three galvannealing temperatures (480, 500 and 520 °C) were used to evaluate the effects of GA time/temperature on the microstructural evolution and formation kinetics of coating as a function of substrate Mn content. By increasing the galvannealing time and temperature, it was observed that for all steels, the Fe-Zn growth rate (alloying rate), thickness of gamma layer (Γ-Fe3Zn10) and iron content of the galvannealed coating were increased. It was concluded that galvannealing kinetics of DP and CMn steels at 480°C are faster than those of the EDDS steel. However, the galvannealing kinetics of DP and CMn steels at 500 and 520°C were relatively similar to each other and insignificantly different than those of EDDS. Accelerated galvannealing kinetics of higher Mn containing steels in this research, i.e. DP and CMn, could be ascribed to the presence of thicker oxide film/larger oxide particles at the surface that may have been reduced by aluminothermic reduction and accelerated inhibition layer breakdown. Considering the alloying rate and chemistry of the GA coating, it was found that 500 and 520 °C are not suitable industrial galvannealing temperatures for experimental steels in this research.</p> / Master of Applied Science (MASc)
