Enhanced piezoelectric energy harvesting powered wireless sensor nodes using passive interfaces and power management approach

Giuliano, Alessandro January 2014 (has links)
Low-frequency vibrations typically occur in many practical structures and systems when in use, for example, in aerospaces and industrial machines. Piezoelectric materials feature compactness, lightweight, high integration potential, and permit to transduce mechanical energy from vibrations into electrical energy. Because of their properties, piezoelectric materials have been receiving growing interest during the last decades as potential vibration- harvested energy generators for the proliferating number of embeddable wireless sensor systems in applications such as structural health monitoring (SHM). The basic idea behind piezoelectric energy harvesting (PEH) powered architectures, or energy harvesting (EH) more in general, is to develop truly “fit and forget” solutions that allow reducing physical installations and burdens to maintenance over battery-powered systems. However, due to the low mechanical energy available under low-frequency conditions and the relatively high power consumption of wireless sensor nodes, PEH from low-frequency vibrations is a challenge that needs to be addressed for the majority of the practical cases. Simply saying, the energy harvested from low-frequency vibrations is not high enough to power wireless sensor nodes or the power consumption of the wireless sensor nodes is higher than the harvested energy. This represents a main barrier to the widespread use of PEH technology at the current state of the development, despite the advantages it may offer. The main contribution of this research work concerns the proposal of a novel EH circuitry, which is based on a whole-system approach, in order to develop enhanced PEH powered wireless sensor nodes, hence to compensate the existing mismatch between harvested and demanded energy. By whole-system approach, it is meant that this work develops an integrated system-of-systems rather than a single EH unit, thus getting closer to the industrial need of a ready- to-use energy-autonomous solution for wireless sensor applications such as SHM. To achieve so, this work introduces: Novel passive interfaces in connection with the piezoelectric harvester that permit to extract more energy from it (i.e., a complex conjugate impedance matching (CCIM) interface, which uses a PC permalloy toroidal coil to achieve a large inductive reactance with a centimetre- scaled size at low frequency; and interfaces for resonant PEH applications, which exploit the harvester‟s displacement to achieve a mechanical amplification of the input force, a magnetic and a mechanical activation of a synchronised switching harvesting on inductor (SSHI) mechanism). A novel power management approach, which permits to minimise the power consumption for conditioning the transduced signal and optimises the flow of the harvested energy towards a custom-developed wireless sensor communication node (WSCN) through a dedicated energy-aware interface (EAI); where the EAI is based on a voltage sensing device across a capacitive energy storage. Theoretical and experimental analyses of the developed systems are carried in connection with resistive loads and the WSCN under excitations of low frequency and strain/acceleration levels typical of two potential energy- autonomous applications, that are: 1) wireless condition monitoring of commercial aircraft wings through non-resonant PEH based on Macro-Fibre Composite (MFC) material bonded to aluminium and composite substrates; and wireless condition monitoring of large industrial machinery through resonant PEH based on a cantilever structure. shown that under similar testing conditions the developed systems feature a performance in comparison with other architectures reported in the literature or currently available on the market. Power levels up to 12.16 mW and 116.6 µW were respectively measured across an optimal resistive load of 66 277 kΩ for an implemented non-resonant MFC energy harvester on aluminium substrate and a resonant cantilever-based structure when no interfaces were added into the circuits. When the WSCN was connected to the harvesters in place of the resistive loads, data transmissions as fast as 0.4 and s were also respectively measured. By use of the implemented passive interfaces, a maximum power enhancement of around 95% and 452% was achieved in the two tested cases and faster data transmissions obtained with a maximum percentage improvement around 36% and 73%, respectively. By the use of the EAI in connection with the WSCN, results have also shown that the overall system‟s power consumption is as low as a few microwatts during non- active modes of operation (i.e., before the WSCN starts data acquisition and transmission to a base station). Through the introduction of the developed interfaces, this research work takes a whole-system approach and brings about the capability to continuously power wireless sensor nodes entirely from vibration-harvested energy in time intervals of a few seconds or fractions of a second once they have been firstly activated. Therefore, such an approach has potential to be used for real-world energy- autonomous applications of SHM.

Balancing of Network Energy using Observer Approach

Patharlapati, Sai Ram Charan 02 December 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Efficient energy use is primarily for any sensor networks to function for a longer time period. There have been many efficient schemes with various progress levels proposed by many researchers. Yet, there still more improvements are needed. This thesis is an attempt to make wireless sensor networks with further efficient on energy usage in the network with respect to rate of delivery of the messages. In sensor network architecture radio, sensing and actuators have influence over the power consumption in the entire network. While listening as well as transmitting, energy is consumed by the radio. However, if by reducing listening times or by reducing the number of messages transmitting would reduce the energy consumption. But, in real time scenario with critical information sensing network leads to information loss. To overcome this an adaptive routing technique should be considered. So, that it focuses on saving energy in a much more sophisticated way without reducing the performance of the sensing network transmitting and receiving functionalities. This thesis tackles on parts of the energy efficiency problem in a wireless sensor network and improving delivery rate of messages. To achieve this a routing technique is proposed. In this method, switching between two routing paths are considered and the switching decision taken by the server based on messages delivered comparative previous time intervals. The goal is to get maximum network life time without degrading the number of messages at the server. In this work some conventional routing methods are considered for implementing an approach. This approach is by implementing a shortest path, Gradient based energy routing algorithm and an observer component to control switching between paths. Further, controlled switching done by observer compared to normal initial switch rule. Evaluations are done in a simulation environment and results show improvement in network lifetime in a much more balanced way.

Indoor localisation by using wireless sensor nodes

Koyuncu, Hakan January 2014 (has links)
This study is devoted to investigating and developing WSN based localisation approaches with high position accuracies indoors. The study initially summarises the design and implementation of localisation systems and WSN architecture together with the characteristics of LQI and RSSI values. A fingerprint localisation approach is utilised for indoor positioning applications. A k-nearest neighbourhood algorithm (k-NN) is deployed, using Euclidean distances between the fingerprint database and the object fingerprints, to estimate unknown object positions. Weighted LQI and RSSI values are calculated and the k-NN algorithm with different weights is utilised to improve the position detection accuracy. Different weight functions are investigated with the fingerprint localisation technique. A novel weight function which produced the maximum position accuracy is determined and employed in calculations. The study covered designing and developing the centroid localisation (CL) and weighted centroid localisation (WCL) approaches by using LQI values. A reference node localisation approach is proposed. A star topology of reference nodes are to be utilized and a 3-NN algorithm is employed to determine the nearest reference nodes to the object location. The closest reference nodes are employed to each nearest reference nodes and the object locations are calculated by using the differences between the closest and nearest reference nodes. A neighbourhood weighted localisation approach is proposed between the nearest reference nodes in star topology. Weights between nearest reference nodes are calculated by using Euclidean and physical distances. The physical distances between the object and the nearest reference nodes are calculated and the trigonometric techniques are employed to derive the object coordinates. An environmentally adaptive centroid localisation approach is proposed. Weighted standard deviation (STD) techniques are employed adaptively to estimate the unknown object positions. WSNs with minimum RSSI mean values are considered as reference nodes across the sensing area. The object localisation is carried out in two phases with respect to these reference nodes. Calculated object coordinates are later translated into the universal coordinate system to determine the actual object coordinates. Virtual fingerprint localisation technique is introduced to determine the object locations by using virtual fingerprint database. A physical fingerprint database is organised in the form of virtual database by using LQI distribution functions. Virtual database elements are generated among the physical database elements with linear and exponential distribution functions between the fingerprint points. Localisation procedures are repeated with virtual database and localisation accuracies are improved compared to the basic fingerprint approach. In order to reduce the computation time and effort, segmentation of the sensing area is introduced. Static and dynamic segmentation techniques are deployed. Segments are defined by RSS ranges and the unknown object is localised in one of these segments. Fingerprint techniques are applied only in the relevant segment to find the object location. Finally, graphical user interfaces (GUI) are utilised with application program interfaces (API), in all calculations to visualise unknown object locations indoors.

Reconfigurable FSM for Ultra-Low Power Wireless Sensor Network Nodes

Ragavan, Rengarajan January 2013 (has links)
Wireless sensor networks (WSN) play an important role in today’s monitoring and controlsystems like environmental monitoring, military surveillance, industrial sensing and control, smarthome systems and tracking systems. As the application of WSN grows by leaps and bounds, there is anincreasing demand in placing a larger number of sensors and controllers to meet the requirements. Theincreased number of sensors necessitates flexibility in the functioning of nodes. Nodes in wirelesssensor networks should be capable of being dynamically reconfigured to perform various tasks is theneed of the hour.In order to achieve flexibility in node functionality, it is common to adopt reconfigurablearchitecture for WSN nodes. FPGA-based architectures are popular reconfigurable architectures bywhich WSN nodes can be programmed to take up different roles across time. Area and power are themajor overheads in FPGA based architectures, where interconnect consumes more power and area thanlogic cells. The contemporary WSN standard requires longer battery life and micro size nodes for easyplacement and maintenance-free operation for years together.Three solutions have been studied and evaluated to approach this problem: 1) Homogenousembedded FPGA platform, 2) Power gated reconfigurable finite state machines and 3) Pass transistorlogic (PTL) based reconfigurable finite state machines. Embedded FPGA is a CMOS 65nm customdeveloped small homogenous FPGA which holds the functionality of the WSN nodes and it will bedynamically reconfigured from time to time to change the functionality of the node. In Power gatedreconfigurable FSM architecture, the functionality of the node is expressed in the form of finite statemachines, which will be implemented in a LUT based power gated design. In PTL based reconfigurablefinite state machine architecture, the finite state machines are completely realized using PTL basedcustom designed sets of library components. Low power configuration memory is used to dynamicallyreconfigure the design with various FSMs at different times.

Allocation conjointe des canaux de fréquence et des créneaux de temps et routage avec QdS dans les réseaux de capteurs sans fil denses et étendus / Joint allocation of channels of frequency and time slots with QoS routing for large-scale Wireless Sensor Networks

Ben Slimane, Jamila 12 March 2013 (has links)
The general context of the present memory is about the cross-layer optimization of wireless sensors networks based on ultra wide band technology UWB. The proposed solutions ensure the share and the efficient allocation of spectral and temporal resources, the optimization of the energy consumption and the support of multi-constraints quality of services QoS. The most challenging issue is providing a tradeoff between the resource efficiency and the multiconstrained QoS support. For this purpose, we proposed a new Wireless Hospital Sensor Network (WHSN) three-tiered architecture in order to support large-scale deployment and to improve the network performance. Then we designed a channel allocation scheme (UWBCAS,)and a prioritized multi-channel multi-time slot MAC protocol (PMCMTP) to enhance network performance and maximize the resource utilization. Finally, we proposed a joint duty cycle scheduling, resource allocation and multi-constrained QoS routing algorithm (JSAR) which simultaneously combines, a duty cycle scheduling scheme for energy saving, a resource allocation scheme for efficient use of frequency channels and time slots, and an heuristic for multi-constrained routing protocol

PUC Campinas / Searching for comfort and quality of life man has spent more than 90% of his time in artificial environments. Studies show that many serious diseases are occurring due to lack of a quality internal environment. In addition to the health consequences, a performance decrease in the accomplishment of daily tasks, such as intellectual, work and other activities is observed in the human being. The literature reports four factors that have the greatest effect on the quality of an environment: Thermal (temperature and humidity suited to its activities), Visual (correct intensity of luminosity), Acoustics (low repetitive noise level) and Air Quality (levels of gases and particulates in the air). Two of these invisible factors, the Thermal and the Air Quality, seriously stand out. In order to mitigate these effects, it is of the utmost importance to monitor and act on humidification, heating, air-conditioning, and automatic air exchange (ventilation) systems in order to guarantee comfort and tranquility for the occupants of a closed environment. The objective of this work is to propose a system to act on two of the above mentioned factors: Thermal Comfort (temperature and humidity) and Air Quality (CO2 gas concentration). In order to develop a technology that is both efficient and inexpensive, it is proposed that a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) be used for communication between networked equipment, the choice of low cost boards and sensors, and the use of Infrared for sending commands to air conditioning and humidifier devices.
