[en] TELLING STORIES: SELF-PRESENTATION IN POLITICAL DISCOURSE / [pt] CONTANDO HISTÓRIAS: A CONSTRUÇÃO DE IDENTIDADES EM DISCURSO POLÍTICO

MARCIA VIEIRA FRIAS 02 June 2008 (has links)
[en] This work is intended as a contribution to the understanding of the contemporary Brazilian political scene: it integrates Socio-interactional Narrative Analysis with political discourse aiming to offer a linguist`s perspective on president Lula`s continued popularity. Personal stories embedded in six speeches delivered by the president between April 2006 and March 2007 form the corpus of this analysis. Freely based on Labov`s narrative model and on Linde´s notion of life story, and also resorting to the notion of frame as per Bateson and Goffman, and to Goffman`s footing, the analysis identifies several self- presentations constructed and displayed by president Lula through those personal stories: Northeastern migrant, blue collar worker, union leader, father and president. By showing how these identities are narratively constructed, the analysis emphasizes projected character traits and singularities of meaning and indicates, in relation to the different audiences of the president´s speeches, how these meanings and identities can obtain alignments and function as a pre-condition for achieving persuasion, the basic objective of political discourse in general.

[pt] VIVA LA FEDERACIÓN!: A RELAÇÃO DE JUAN MANUEL DE ROSAS COM AS PROVÍNCIAS DO RIO DA PRATA ENTRE 1835 E 1852 / [en] VIVA LA FEDERACIÓN!: JUAN MANUEL DE ROSAS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PROVINCES OF THE RIO DA PRATA BETWEEN 1835 AND 1852

JULIANA DA SILVA SABATINELLI 02 October 2020 (has links)
[en] Between 1835 and 1852, the second term of Juan Manuel de Rosas as governor of Buenos Aires was defined by his use of broad powers to control the press, as well as executing censorship, political coercion and violence. His objective was to create a sense of unity, with the promise that this path would take the Provinces of Rio da Prata closer to a Republican ideal, a political system that had been sought for since the 1820s. Although the presence of the government in the city of Buenos Aires was strong both in the public and private spheres, the provinces enjoyed more autonomy. Rosas reorganized the relationship with each region, so that the period in which he was governor was different from everything that the United Provinces had previously experienced with regards to the political relationship between local provinces and the central government. The present work intends to identify certain actions of Rosas government from 1835 in the provinces available in the letters to the governors and the official press to understand the paths chosen by the leader for the consolidation of a government that, although it used the discourse of federalism, is widely held to be authoritarian.

[en] CONVERGENCES AND DIVERGENCES: THE POLITICAL REPUBLICAN LANGUAGE DURING THE CAMPANHA CIVILISTA / [pt] CONVERGÊNCIAS E DIVERGÊNCIAS: A LINGUAGEM POLÍTICA REPUBLICANA NA CAMPANHA CIVILISTA

ERICA SANTOS SZABO 12 March 2015 (has links)
[en] In this dissertation I analyze the republican political language through the texts produced by Hermes da Fonseca, Rui Barbosa, and their followers during the so-called Campanha Civilista. Unlike the traditional historiography, I will try to demonstrate that the ideas of both candidates about the Brazilian Republic were more convergent than divergent, despite their different professional backgrounds. Such similarity is due to the fact that both shared a same linguistic community (in the sense Pocock understands it) wherethe concept of republican politics and that one of nation appear in a very similar way. Their distinctalliances ans insertions among the regional political groups remained being responsible for the main differences they presented during this presidential campaign.
