[pt] Esta dissertação desenvolve reflexões sobre a ideia de Oriente, a partir de textos de cunho autobiográfico do intelectual palestino e norte-americano Edward Said e do escritor francês Roland Barthes. Neste trabalho, privilegia-se o entendimento das escritas de si como espaço fértil para a construção de saberes que favoreçam dimensões não exclusivamente científicas da teoria. Assim, tais escritos de Said e Barthes são considerados modos alternativos de produção de conhecimentos e noções sobre o Oriente. O segundo capítulo da dissertação trata da encenação de um personagem oriental e fora de lugar em textos ensaísticos e narrativos de Said. O terceiro aborda como Barthes desenvolve relações com a ideia de Oriente em textos com elementos autobiográficos, sejam memórias ou diários de viagem. O último capítulo traz, na forma de fragmentos, reminiscências e considerações sobre as relações da autora com o Oriente. / [en] The idea of Orient is discussed in this work using texts with autobiographical elements written by the Palestinian-American intellectual Edward Said and the French writer Roland Barthes. In this study I understand self-writings as a fertile ground for the construction of knowledge, supporting non-exclusively scientific dimensions of theory. Therefore, the writings of Said and Barthes are considered alternatives modes of producing knowledge and notions of Orient. The second chapter deals with the enactment of an oriental and out of place character in essays and narratives by Said. The third chapter emphasizes how Barthes develops his own relationship with the idea of Orient in texts with autobiographical elements, including memoirs and travel diaries. The last chapter brings, in form of fragments, reminiscences and my own considerations towards the idea of Orient.

[pt] O Fotógrafo: Uma História no Afeganistão, história em quadrinhos realizada em coautoria pelo fotógrafo Didier Lefèvre, o quadrinista Emmanuel Guibert e o designer gráfico Frédéric Lemercier, narra a experiência de Lefèvre como fotojornalista contratado pela organização Médicos Sem Fronteiras em uma expedição que no ano de 1986 levou socorro médico ao Afeganistão. Esse trabalho investiga de que forma um meio híbrido como as histórias em quadrinhos - que dialoga com frequência imagem e texto, e, no caso de O Fotógrafo, também ilustração e fotografia - pode ser lido como uma linguagem específica. Pretende-se também analisar o duplo movimento de escrita de si e de escrita do outro articulado no livro, levando-se em conta as particularidades da escrita coautoral. / [en] The Photographer: Into War-torn Afghanistan with Doctors Without Borders, a graphic novel coauthored by photographer Didier Lefèvre, comic book artist Emmanuel Guibert and graphic designer Frédéric Lemercier, presents Lefèvre s experience as a photojournalist hired by Doctors Without Borders in a 1986 expedition that brought medical aid to Afghanistan. This work investigates the manner in which a hybrid medium such as comics - which frequently uses a dialogue between image and text, and, in the case of The Photographer, illustration and photography as well - can be read as a specific form of language. It also aims at analyzing the double movement of self-writing and other-writing articulated in the book, taking into account the specificities of co-authorial writing.

[pt] Esta dissertação tem como objetivo refletir sobre questões relacionadas à autobiografia dentro da perspectiva contemporânea dos estudos biográficos, legitimadora dos discursos situados à margem dos cânones literários.O objeto de análise da mesma é uma carta e algumas fotografias. A carta, de 317 páginas, foi escrita por Camilo Cândido de Araújo - meu avô materno -, no período de 14 de setembro de 1969 a 26 de janeiro de 1970 e endereçada ao seu filho mais velho. A correspondência - de conteúdo memorialista - é um legado que o pai deixa ao filho; uma espécie de autobiografia que, além de ter sido escrita no final da vida do autor, teve papel fundamental em sua história. A partir desse documento, encontrado recentemente, são feitas reflexões sobre questões pertinentes à literatura como escrita epistolar e autobiográfica, a necessidade da escrita e a memória. A relação biógrafo/biografado é tomada como ponto de partida para destacar a linhagem materna. As fotografias familiares são lidas em contraponto com o texto, como suplemento do material de análise. / [en] The purpose of this thesis is to reflect on questions relating to the autobiographical genre within the contemporary perspective of biographical studies, a perspective that has been legitimizing these discourses situated at the margins of literary canon. The object of analysis is a testament/letter and a few photographs. The 317-page document was written by Camilo Cândido de Araújo, my maternal grandfather, between September 14, 1969 and January 26, 1970, and it was addressed to his eldest son. The epistle - a memoir in content - is a legacy from a father to his son; it is a form of autobiography that, besides having been written in the final years of the authors life, played a fundamental role in his own life history. Based on this recently found material, reflections are made on matters pertinent to literature as epistolary and autobiographic writings, the necessity of writing, and memory. The relationship between the biographer and his subject is the starting point for highlighting the maternal lineage. The family photographs serve as a counterpoint to the text, as a supplement to the material in question.
