[en] THE IMPACT OF FREQUENT FLYER PROGRAMS ON MARKET COMPETITION IN THE AMERICAN DOMESTIC AIRLINE INDUSTRY / [pt] PROGRAMAS DE FIDELIZAÇÃO E SEU IMPACTO NO REGIME DE CONCORRÊNCIA NA INDÚSTRIA AÉREA AMERICANAVIVIAN FIGER 14 September 2007 (has links)
lealdade do
consumidor.
competição no mercado. Estudos
outros. O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar o impacto
da fatia de consumidores
capturados nos preços correntes, causados pela introdução
de custos artificiais de
troca no mercado. A forma reduzida estimada sugere uma
correlação de
aproximadamente 13% entre preços correntes e a variável
construída que
representa um índice de fidelidade passado. O resultado é
robusto a estimativas
adicionais. / [en] Frequent flyer program is a type of consumer loyalty
program. By
rewarding consumer in a non-linear way for accumulating
purchases, it may alter
the intensity of price competition. Empirical studies have
measured the impact off
FFP in prices. However, they focus on its impact through
airport dominance,
alliances and other features. The objective of this study
is to investigate the impact
of the share of locked in consumers on prices, caused by
the introduction of
artificial switching costs in the market. The reduced form
estimates suggests a
correlation of approximately 13% between current prices
and the constructed
variable fidelization index. The result is robust to
additional estimates.

[en] LABOR MARKET CONDITIONS AND GENDER INEQUALITY: EVIDENCE FROM THE BRAZILIAN TRADE LIBERALIZATION / [pt] CONDIÇÕES DO MERCADO DE TRABALHO E DESIGUALDADE DE GÊNERO: EVIDÊNCIA DA LIBERALIZAÇÃO COMERCIAL BRASILEIRAGIOVANNA RIBEIRO PAIVA DE SOUZA 19 October 2017 (has links)
[en] This paper studies the effect of a large and plausibly exogenous tradeinduced shock on gender inequality in the labor market. In the 1990 s, Brazilian government decided to reduce import tariffs, inducing a large,
once and for all trade liberalization, with heterogeneous effects across local economies. Using Brazilian Decennial Censuses, I estimate medium (1991-2000) and long (1991-2010) term effects of this shock to labor market outcomes separately by gender and its consequences for gender inequality. I provide a conceptual model of occupational segregation to rationalize the results. Finally, I also examine potential implications of this shock to the marriage market and individuals human capital accumulation. Results point that, in the medium run, in harder hit regions there was an increase in the gender wage gap and women proportionally faced higher increase in nonemployment compared to men. In the long run, the losses in employment in the tradable sector remained, but in the as a whole economy they disappeared, while the gender wage gap in non-tradables decreased. Besides that, both in the medium and long run, there was an increase in human capital accumulation, at the same that the share of women that are married and have children decreased. In light of the model, these findings emphasize the importance of paying attention not only to the wage inequality, but also to the unequal distribution of genders between occupations.

[en] THE IMPACT OF THE FOREIGN BANK ENTRY ON THE PERFORMANCE OF BRAZILIAN PRIVATE BANKING / [pt] O IMPACTO DA ENTRADA DOS BANCOS ESTRANGEIROS NO DESEMPENHO DOS BANCOS PRIVADOS NACIONAISFLAVIO BITTER 19 March 2004 (has links)
Contradizendo a evidência empírica
bancos privados nacionais. / [en] Current empirical literature concerning foreign bank entry
and case studies conducted in different countries, shows
that the foreign bank entry causes negative impact on their
domestic competitors performance. Basically, due to the
improvement of the competitive market structure and better
banking practices introduced by foreign banks, the domestic
competitors are compelled to reduce their level of
profitability and net interest margin (spreads), enlarge
their credit intermediation, improve their operational
efficiency, and increase their amount of risk, resulting in
higher loan loss provisioning. By using semestral data from
11 private Brazilian banks during the period of 1994 -
2002, and conducting panel regressions and linear
multivariate regression for the aggregate data of the
sample, this work aims at offering evidence of a statistic
relationship between the extent of foreign entry and
ownership in the Brazilian private banking performance.
This work show that in Brazil, the foreign bank entry,
stimulated by the economic liberalization of the Real Plan
and reforms taken under the legislative framework, had
little impact on the Brazilian private bank performance,
which contradicts the empirical evidence in the literature.
Estimation results suggest that an increase in the share of
foreign banks leads to higher profitability, lower
operational efficiency and higher loan loss provisioning of
domestic private banks.

[en] FIRM HIERARCHIES, MANAGERS, AND TRADE: REACTING TO LIBERALIZATION / [pt] HIERARQUIAS DE FIRMAS, GERENTES E COMÉRCIO: REAGINDO À LIBERALIZAÇÃOARTHUR CARVALHO BRITO PEREIRA DE SOUZA 20 September 2021 (has links)
[en] While it is known that international trade and organizational practices are determinants of firm productivity, empirical evidence on their relation to each other is scarce. This paper explores credible exogenous variation in tariff reductions across manufacturing sectors to show that firms in Brazil are less structured in terms of hierarchies following the shock. Consistent with the literature on knowledge-based hierarchies, increased foreign competition reduces significantly the share of managers and the number of organizational
layers on a firm. Besides, we find notable compositional movements within sectors: although similarly sized, entrant firms have fewer managers and layers than leavers. By using comprehensive data with more credible identification than previous work in the literature, our paper documents stylized facts on firms organization in a developing country, as well as contributes to the study of a potentially important determinant of aggregate productivity.

[en] ESSAYS ON LIBERALIZATION, REGULATION AND INVESTMENT IN HYDROTHERMAL SYSTEMS / [pt] ENSAIOS SOBRE LIBERALIZAÇÃO, REGULAÇÃO E INVESTIMENTO EM SISTEMAS HIDROTÉRMICOSEMILIO HIROSHI MATSUMURA 28 June 2004 (has links)
No primeiro ensaio,
geradores.
centralizado. Quando o investimento é privado, a entrada
efetiva de nova capacidade pode ser consideravelmente
diferente daquela utilizada no despacho ótimo. Modelos
mercado. / [en] This dissertation is structured into 3 essays in which I
analyze the economic effects of regulation and
liberalization of hydrothermal systems. So far empirical
and theoretical studies about power markets have been done
mainly for thermal systems, in which equilibrium
conditions reflect the fact that current production
decisions can be analyzed separately from future
production decisions. In hydrothermal systems, however,
strategies are dynamically connected what yields
equilibrium conditions different from thermal systems.
This difference in the nature of the equilibrium is the
main building block upon which I will analyze some
important questions like liberalization of the market,
investment, market power of generators and policies
towards its mitigation and to compare the effectiveness of
some common proposed policy interventions recommended to
thermal systems in the context of a hydrothermal system.
In the first essay, I analyze one of the main concerns in
restructured electricity markets: the market power of
generators. I show that two common mitigation measures
proposed for thermal power markets (incentives to long-
term contracting and horizontal deconcentration) do not
necessarily affect the firms` market power in hydrothermal
systems in the same way as in thermal systems. In the
second essay, I consider the incentives to investment in
the Brazilian centralized dispatch in which future entry
of new capacity is one of the most important determinants
in the optimal management of the system. When investment
is not determinative, investors can choose the most
appropriate time to enter into the market. Previous real
option models incorporates this flexibility on the optimal
time to invest but do not consider that each potential new
firm may affect the current optimal stock of water to be
left to the next period. The fact that indicative entry
plan does not take into account that investors` choice of
the optimal time to invest may affect current values
(especially the stock of water to be left to the next
period)and hence reinforcing possible distortions in the
investment decision, given future prices and dispatched
quantities depend on the current optimal dispatch. In the
third essay, I discuss the restructuring experiences of
Brazil and California. Despite different goals and
different initial market structures, both undertook the
restructuring of their respective electricity sectors
largely based on the same deregulation framework in vogue
in the 1990s. Coincidently, a few years later, both were
facing serious crisis in their respective electricity
sectors. The lack of attention to some important aspects
of the liberalization or deregulation of the electricity
sector and inadequate regulatory incentives could have
exacerbated rather than attenuated the deleterious effects
of their respective crisis. The main lesson from both
experiences is that liberalization or deregulation of
electricity markets should be carefully implemented, with
special attention to the potential impact of the new
structure on the equilibrium allocation during market
stress situations.

[pt] MODELAGEM DO EQUILÍBRIO DOS MERCADOS LIVRE E REGULADO NO CONTEXTO DE LIBERALIZAÇÃO DO SETOR ELÉTRICO: UMA ABORDAGEM POR MOPEC / [en] MODELING THE EQUILIBRIUM IN THE FREE AND REGULATED MARKETS IN THE CONTEXT OF POWER SECTOR LIBERALIZATION: A MOPEC APPROACHJOAO PEDRO THIMOTHEO BASTOS 23 June 2022 (has links)
a transição energética.
agentes (distribuidora, consumidores cativos, consumidores livres e geradores), as
[en] The power sector is undergoing a series of transformations to accommodate
the energy transition. Among these changes, the market liberalization stands out,
with greater consumer autonomy and the possibility of migration between the
regulated and free markets. This context adds complexity to the task of energy
distribution companies to project their future demand and to contract energy to
serve the captive market, as these contracts should serve increasingly dynamic
consumers and, consequently, a more unstable portfolio. Moreover, the migration
of consumers to the free market may generate over-contracting of distributors,
incurring extra costs for it and for the remaining captive consumers. This work
proposes an optimization model to determine the equilibrium prices in the free and
regulated environments in a liberalized market. Given the interdependence of
agents decisions (distributors, captive consumers, free consumers and generators),
their interactions are modeled as Multiple Optimization Problems with Equilibrium
Constraints (MOPEC), in which each agent s revenue maximization problems are
combined into a single optimization problem, and connected by equilibrium
constraints. It is demonstrated that the proposed MOPEC can be represented by a
linear programming problem. The agents are modeled as risk-averse, with their
individual objective functions represented as the convex combination of the
expected value and the Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) of their revenues. Among
the results of the model, we highlight the optimal levels of consumer migration,
contracting decisions, and contract prices in the free market and tariffs in the
regulated market, for a given system configuration. In addition, different regulatory
proposals are presented and modeled for the treatment of liabilities associated with
the over-contracting of distributors. The model is applied in a simplified case study
and another one with realistic data of the Brazilian power system. Finally, the model
is integrated in an iterative process that determines the optimal system expansion,
so that the resulting contracting decisions and prices generate economic signals for
investments in generation capacity expansion. This methodology is applied in a
case study comprising generation expansion exercises of the Brazilian power
system.
