’Source to sink’ sedimentology and petrology of a dryland fluvial system, and implications for reservoir quality, Lake Eyre Basin, Central Australia.

Reservoir quality of subsurface sandstones depends on the composition, texture and grain size of the initial sediments. These factors are a function of hinterland processes: tectonic setting, provenance, climate and depositional environment, and sediment transportation processes. This study focuses on a modern, dryland, fluvial deposition system from source-to-sink that aims to provide a quantitative dataset analogue to facilitate forward modelling for prediction of subsurface compositions, grain size and textures of reservoir sandstones. Umbum Creek, in the western Lake Eyre Basin of Central Australia, was selected as a small river network (~ 100km²) in order to study source-to-sink sedimentation. The provenance area was analysed using isopach maps derived from a 783 drill-hole dataset, which included stratigraphy and lithology information. Subsequently forty-three samples of different provenance lithotypes from the Umbum Creek catchment were collected for petrographic thin-section analysis. Recent sediments were then sampled from 90 strategically located stream confluences along Umbum Creek and tributaries (proximal, medial and distal subsets). A quantitative textural and compositional dataset was subsequently generated from 34 selected samples. With half-phi sieve analysis (4mm to 32 microns), and an associated petrographic description recognising 72 categories of grain composition was undertaken for each sample. The provenance analysis using isopach maps demonstrated that Palaeozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary basin evolution in the study area was controlled by northeast and northwest-trending structural elements. The regional uplift of the Peake and Denison Inliers that occurred during the Cenozoic had a significant impact on the evolution of the Lake Eyre Basin, causing changes in the provenance of Late Neogene sedimentation and on through to the present. The sink area represents a shallow intracratonic basin whereby a thin veneer of fluvial/lacustrine sediments is accumulating adjacent to a basement uplift. This study has highlighted the importance of multiple sediment provenances. Five different provenance lithotype grains were identified in the Umbum Creek modern sediments: the Gawler Craton plutonic / basement provenance (recycled) the Peake and Denison Inliers Proterozoic volcanic provenance (recycled), the Davenport Ranges metamorphic provenance, the Mesozoic sedimentary provenance and the Cenozoic sedimentary provenance. Whereas a downstream fining of grain size was expected, a general trend of downstream coarsening of grain size was noted being the result of aeolian deflation of fines and intra-basinal coarse-grained sediment contributions. In the sink area, modern sediments from the terminal splay complex comprise 70-80% quartz, 10-20% lithic fragments (of which ~ 7% are ductile lithic grains), < 3% feldspar, and clay (<2%). Grains are sub-angular to well-rounded and moderately well sorted. The compositional and textural maturity of the terminal splay sediments is attributed to reworked plutonic quartz grains, the dissolution and disintegration of feldspar and carbonate grains during transportation, along with the breakdown of lithic fragments due to fluvio-aeolian interactions and subsequent mechanical/ chemical weathering processes. These data were used to build a predictive forward model for modal sandstone analysis that achieved a fair to good correlation between predicted and observed grain lithotypes and provenance categories. These results illustrate that the character of sands in the Umbum Creek catchment are governed by a multiplicity of controls such as tectonic setting, provenance lithotype analysis, climate, regional topographic gradient, hinterland transport distance, basin subsidence rate and depositional environment. The fluvio-aeolian depositional environment along with the current arid to semi-arid playa climatic conditions of Umbum Creek catchment facilitate the growth of clay coatings, however accounts for a low clay matrix within the deposits. In addition, the playa environment also facilitates the alteration of infiltrated detrital clay to kaolinite, the formation of evaporites (gypsum, halite and anhydrite) and the formation of authigenic clays. Effect of blood flow on high intensity focused ultrasound therapy in an isolated, perfused liver model

High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an emerging non-invasive thermal ablative modality that can be utilised for the treatment of solid organ tumours, including liver cancer. Acoustic cavitation is a phenomenon that can occur during HIFU and its presence can enhance heating rates. One major limitation of thermal ablative techniques in general, such as radiofrequency and microwave ablation, is the heat sink effect imparted by large vasculature. Thermal advection from blood flow in vessels &ge; 3 - 4 mm in diameter has been shown to significantly reduce heating rates and peak temperatures in the target tissue, potentially leading to treatment failure. With regards to HIFU therapy, a clearer understanding is required of the effects of blood flow on heating, cavitation and thermal tissue necrosis, which is the treatment endpoint in clinical thermal ablation. Therefore, the overall aim of this thesis project was to elucidate the effects of blood flow on HIFU-induced heating, cavitation and histological assessment of thermal ablation. A unique isolated, perfused porcine liver model was used in order to provide a relevant test bed, with physiological and anatomical characteristics similar to the in vivo human liver. The normothermic liver perfusion device used in all studies presented in this work can keep an organ alive in a functional state ex vivo for in excess of 72 hours. A further advantage of the liver perfusion device was that it allowed blood flow to be stopped completely and resumed rapidly, allowing studies to be conducted under zero flow conditions. A therapeutic HIFU system was used in order to deliver HIFU therapy to regions of hepatic parenchyma adjacent (&le; 3 mm) to large (&ge; 5 mm) blood vessels or away from vasculature (&ge; 1 cm) at either 1.06 MHz or at 3.18 MHz. Cavitation events during HIFU therapy were spatio-temporally monitored using a previously developed passive acoustic mapping (PAM) technique. The cavitation threshold at each frequency was determined through assessment of acoustic emissions acquired through PAM during HIFU exposure at a range of acoustic pressures. Real time thermal data during HIFU therapy were obtained using an implantable 400 &mu;m thermocouple, aligned with the HIFU focus, in order to assess the effect of large vessel blood flow on peak tissue temperatures. Thermal data were obtained at 1.06 MHz, in the presence of acoustic cavitation and at 3.18 MHz, in the absence of cavitation, both in the presence and complete absence of blood flow. Finally, histological assessment of cell viability and cell death was performed in order to determine whether any heat sink effect could be overcome, with the achievement of complete tissue necrosis in treatment regions directly adjacent to large vasculature. This work demonstrated for the first time that in perfused, functional liver tissue, the presence of large vasculature and physiological blood flow does not significantly affect ablative HIFU therapy, both in terms of peak focal tissue temperatures attained and histological evidence of complete tissue necrosis. Therefore, HIFU may be superior to other ablative modalities in treating tumours in tissue regions adjacent to major vascular structures, but further work needs to be performed to correlate the experimental findings with clinical outcomes.

Transferts de masse et d'énergie aux interfaces liquide / vapeur avec changement de phase : proposition de modélisation aux grandes échelles des interfaces / Heat and mass transfers at liquid/vapor interfaces with phase-change : proposal for a large-scale modeling of interfaces

La modélisation des transferts thermiques en écoulements diphasiques est l'une des pierres angulaires de l'étude de la sûreté des réacteurs nucléaires. À l'échelle du réacteur, elle repose sur des corrélations expérimentales. L'utilisation croissante de la mécanique des fluides numérique pour les études de sûreté renforce la demande d'expertise dans les outils de simulation, en particulier du point de vue de la modélisation. En soutien aux modèles moyennés à deux fluides, nous souhaitons apporter des informations de fermetures locales pour considérer la physique des transferts interfaciaux et les effets 3D. Pour cela, comme la résolution directe des équations de bilan locales par SND est trop coûteuse, nous souhaitons développer un outil de SGE diphasique pour modéliser les petites échelles turbulentes et les petites déformations interfaciales. Comme le changement de phase est à l'origine de l'écoulement diphasique pour les applications visées, nous étendons dans ce mémoire le modèle Interfaces and Subgrid-Scales (ISS, Toutant et al., 2009a) aux interfaces avec changement de phase, pour lesquelles l'hypothèse de continuité de la vitesse à l'interface n'est plus valable. Le suivi explicite des interfaces permet d'évaluer précisément les transferts comme le taux de transfert de masse. Dans un premier temps, nous établissons une description mésoscopique du problème où l'interface est diffuse en filtrant les équations locales instantanées et en modélisant les transferts sous-filtres aux interfaces. Les principales difficultés de modélisations proviennent (i) de la détermination de la vitesse de l'interface, (ii) de l'effet de la discontinuité des vitesses sur les modèles sous-maille, (iii) de la discontinuité du flux et (iv) de la condition de saturation de l'interface. Les modèles proposés sont qualifiés a priori en observant leur prédiction par filtrage explicite de solutions de SND. Dans un deuxième temps, nous établissons un système macroscopique discontinu équivalent au problème diffus pour bénéficier de l'expertise acquise pour les méthodes numériques de SND. Aux interfaces, les modèles sous-maille sont concentrés pour modifier les conditions de raccord entre les phases. Les conditions de saut ainsi déterminées montrent que la vitesse de l'interface est affectée par la courbure et par le saut de vitesse. Un saut de vitesse tangentielle est introduit pour modéliser la couche limite dynamique. Sur le plan thermique, nous retrouvons la condition de saturation caractéristique du changement de phase ; le taux de changement de phase ne dépend plus uniquement du saut de flux conductif mais, pour pallier la sous-résolution de la couche limite thermique au voisinage de l'interface, nous proposons de lui ajouter la contribution sous-maille des corrélations vitesse/température. Comme en SGE monophasique, le gain apporté par la modélisation ISS permet d'envisager l'utilisation de simulations fines pour des problèmes appliqués. C'est la première étape d'une démarche multi-échelle pour fournir des fermetures aux modèles moyennés à deux fluides. Nous illustrons son potentiel sur une SND multi-bulles complexe. / Modeling heat and mass transfer in two-phase flows with phase-change is crucial in many industrial studies including nuclear safety. Only averaged two-phase flow models can simulate such complex flows. Their accuracy depends in particular on closure laws for interfacial mass, momentum, and energy transfers that often rely on experimental correlations. Supporting averaged models, the goal of this thesis is to bring local closure information from finer simulations to consider 3D-effects and interfacial transfers more accurately. In this prospect, as direct resolution of the local balance equations is too expensive, we seek for a two-phase equivalent of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) in order to tackle simulations with enough bubbles to extract statistics needed in averaged models. Applying a spatial filter, we aim at modeling subgrid turbulence and interfacial transfers. The largest turbulent scales and interface deformations are captured because the filter size is chosen in-between the Kolmogorov scale and the bubble size. Because of the importance of the phase-change phenomena, this thesis extend the Interfaces and Subgrid Scales (ISS) model proposed by Toutant et al. (2009a) to non-material interfaces, i. e., with phase-change. Explicit interface tracking is valuable to accurately estimate interfacial transfers such as the phase-change rate. In the first part of this document, we establish a smeared-interface description of two-phase flows. Sub-grid transfers and interfacial deformations are modeled using the modified Bardina et al. (1983) scale-similarity hypothesis. Main modeling issues comes from (i) the specific interfacial velocity, (ii) the velocity and the temperature gradient discontinuities at the interface and (iii) the saturation condition of the interface. Models are validated using reference data from DNS. In the second up-scaling step, we transform interfacial subgrid models into source terms in the jump conditions in order to establish an equivalent discontinuous model thus benefitting from the knowledge acquired in DNS numerical methods. Transfers between phases are modified and the interfacial velocity is redefined considering the time evolution of curvature and the velocity jump at the interface. As a result, the normal momentum jump is modified. A tangential velocity jump is also introduced to cancel out the sub-resolution of the boundary layer. From a thermal point of view, the classical saturation condition is recovered ; the phase-change rate not only depends on the conduction heat flux but a contribution from the subgrid velocity and temperature correlations must be added to account for the poor resolution of the thermal boundary layer. As for single-phase LES, ISS modeling enables local-scale simulations of industrial configurations. It is the first step of a multi-scale approach towards turbulent bubbly flows. In this thesis, we illustrates how to bridge the gap between DNS and averaged descriptions from reference results obtained on condensing bubbles in a pseudo-turbulent subcooled liquid. Averaged quantities are compared with correlations for the condensation sink term used in the two-fluid model. We are able to underline the phase-change enhancement with increasing void fraction. It shows that this path could be used to improve the understanding of the strong two-way coupling between flow dynamics and interfacial heat transfers.

Crescimento, produtividade e alocação de reservas da figueira, em diferentes condições de cultivo /

Resumo: No presente trabalho determinou-se no primeiro capítulo o crescimento através dos parâmetros: diâmetro do ramo, comprimento do ramo, número de folhas, número de entrenós e número de frutos a cada 21 dias, em plantas da figueira 'Roxo de Valinhos' utilizando cobertura morta, composta por bagaço de cana-de-açúcar triturado, e irrigação, na área experimental do Departamento de Produção Vegetal da Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas da UNESP, Campus de Botucatu-SP. E no segundo capítulo objetivou-se avaliar o tempo de translocação, a relação fonte-dreno nos diferentes órgãos bem como, saber em que órgão se encontraria o carbono-13 após determinados intervalos de tempo, em plantas em estádio reprodutivo e em formação da espécie Ficus carica L. Para tanto, uma folha da figueira considerada adulta através da caracterização fotossintética com um medidor portátil de fotossíntese IRGA-6400, foi colocada dentro de uma câmara de acrílico construída para este fim, e submetida a um ambiente com enriquecimento de 13CO2 por 30 minutos. No experimento tempo de alocação, as plantas de Ficus carica L. foram arrancadas ao longo das horas: 6, 24, 48, 72, 120, 168, 360. Após o tempo especificado as partes (meristema apical, folhas, ramos, caule e sistema radicular) das plantas em estudo foram coletados e imediatamente imersos em nitrogênio líquido (-196 ºC), para evitar que os tecidos permanecessem vivos e conseqüentemente pudessem consumir os fotoassimilados no processo da respiração. As amostras, previamente identificadas foram secas em estufa de circulação forçada a 65º C por 72 horas, em seguida moídas em moinho criogênico, para que houvesse uma perfeita homogeneização, sendo posteriormente analisadas no espectrômetro de massas de razão isotópica, para a determinação do enriquecimento relativo de 13C. Was put inside a acrylic chamber, and submitted to an environment with 13CO2 enrichment for 30 minutes. In experiment time allocation, where the plants of Ficus carica L. were lurches to the long one of the hours: 6, 24, 48, 72, 120, 168, 360. After the time specified the studied plant parts (meristem, sheets, branches, stem and system roots) were collected and immediately immersed in liquid nitrogen (-196 ºC), for avoid that the fabrics remained alive and consequently could consume the fhotosynthates in the breath trial. The samples, previously identified were droughts in of circulation forced to 65º C for 72 hours, right away ground in cryogenic mill, for that had a perfect homogenization, being subsequently analyzed in the mass spectrometry of isotopic reason, for the relative enrichment 13C determination. . Naturally the plant presents values of 13C relative enrichment of -27.92 ‰, allocating more than 90% of the dry mass and the total carbon in the woody part. Uma metodologia de otimização para sistemas de iluminação que empregam LEDs / An optimization methodology for lighting systems that employ LED

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This work presents an optimization methodology for lighting systems that employ LED. Initially, this work brings a calculation methodology capable of obtaining a thermal resistance of heat sink from their dimensions of area, besides enable optimization of the system through reducing their volume by through of change in the number of finned, length and consequently the weight of heat sink. Subsequently, the thesis present a new optimization methodology that has the objective of find the optimal point of operation lighting system taking into consideration the parameters of application current in the device, luminous flux, junction temperature, thermal resistance heat sink, number of LED and lifetime. An example of project is shown, confirming the theory, where the obtained results through of routine calculation coincided with the values found in experimental. The work also present the development of electronic topologies to power a public lighting system employing LED. Therefore, a driver to power of LED based in the integrated two-flyback converters was proposed. One prototype this system was implemented, where the luminaire provide a power of 63W. The experimental results proved the project methodology through of system satisfactory operation, presenting power factor near unit, high efficiency and a low input current distortion was obtained. / Este trabalho apresenta uma metodologia de otimização para sistemas de iluminação que empregam LEDs. Inicialmente, traz-se uma metodologia de cálculos capaz de obter a resistência térmica de dissipadores de calor a partir de suas dimensões de área, além de possibilitar a otimização do sistema através da redução do volume do mesmo por meio da variação do número de aletas, do comprimento e consequentemente da massa do dissipador. Posteriormente o trabalho apresenta uma nova metodologia de otimização que tem o objetivo de encontrar o ponto ótimo de operação do sistema de iluminação, levando-se em conta os parâmetros de corrente direta aplicada no dispositivo, fluxo luminoso, temperatura de junção, resistência térmica do dissipador, número de LEDs e vida útil dos mesmos. Um exemplo de projeto é demonstrado confirmando a teoria apresentada, onde os resultados obtidos através da rotina de cálculos coincidiram com os valores encontrados experimentalmente. O trabalho também apresenta o desenvolvimento de uma topologia eletrônica para alimentar um sistema de iluminação pública empregando LEDs. Dessa maneira, um driver para acionamento de LEDs baseado na integração de dois conversores flyback foi proposto. Um protótipo desse sistema foi implementado, onde a luminária apresenta uma potência de 63W. Resultados experimentais comprovam a metodologia de projeto através da operação satisfatória do sistema, apresentando fator de potência próximo ao unitário, elevada eficiência e o conteúdo harmônico da corrente de entrada do sistema de iluminação atendeu a norma.

O experimento foi conduzido na safra 2006/2007, em condições de campo, em Latossolo Vermelho eutrófico típico, textura argilosa, A moderado, a 21°15’22”de latitude sul e longitude 48°18’58” WGr, em Jaboticabal – SP. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso, compostos por 24 tratamentos, constituídos pela combinação de três espaçamentos entre as linhas (40, 60 e 80 cm) nas parcelas, dois híbridos (30K73 e 30F80) nas subparcelas, e quatro densidades populacionais (30, 50, 70 e 90 mil plantas ha-1) nas sub-subparcelas, com três repetições. As variáveis avaliadas foram: estatura de plantas, altura da 1ª espiga, n.º espigas por planta, diâmetro de colmo, acamamento e quebramento de plantas, n.º de grãos na 1ª espiga, massa de grãos na 1ª espiga, massa de mil grãos, produtividade de grãos e índice de colheita. Foram feitas análises químicas do grão para determinação do teor de sacarose, açucares redutores e amido. Verificou-se que a produtividade do milho aumentou com a redução do espaçamento entre as linhas de 80 para 40 cm, que o melhor arranjo de plantas, para os híbridos 30K73 e 30F80, nas condições de edafoclimáticas de Jaboticabal, é composto pela combinação de 40 cm de espaçamento entre as linhas e 75 e 80 mil plantas ha-1 de densidade populacional, respectivamente. Modificando o arranjo espacial de plantas de milho, a composição final de glicídios no grão não é alterada. / The present work had the objective of evaluating the influence of row spacing and population densities, in two corn hybrids, on the agronomic performance of the culture with enface on production components and productivity. The experiment was carried out in the agricultural year of 2006/2007, under field conditions, in a Typical Haplustox , clay texture, at 21°15’22” South latitude and longitude 48°18’58” W, at Jaboticabal – SP, Brazil. The experimental design was a complete randomized block, in split split-plot scheme with 24 treatments, where the plots were composed by three row spacing (40, 60 e 80 cm), the split-plots by two contrastive hybrids (30K73 ND 30F80) and the split split-plots by four population densities (30, 50, 70, e 90 thousand plants per hectare), with three replications. The following variables were evaluated: plant height, first ear height, number of ear per plant, stem diameter, plant lodging and breakage, number of grains per ear, mass of grains per ear, mass of a thousand grains, grain yield and yield index. Furthermore, grain chemical analyses were done to determine the content of saccharose, redacting sugars and starch. It was verified that corn productivity rises with the reduction of row spacing from 80 to 40 cm, that the best plant arrangement, for the hybrids 30K73 and P0F80, under Jaboticabal environment conditions, is the combination of 40 cm row spacing and 75 and 80 thousand plants per hectare, respectively. Final grain glicidic composition is not altered by the spacial arrangements of corn plants.

Ictiofauna associada à Typha angustifolia (Angiospermae) em riachos

Como conseqüências de transformações ambientais, algumas podem se tornar dominantes, sendo que as plantas aquáticas do gênero Typha são bem sucedidas em brejos e alagados, podendo também ser encontradas em córregos e ribeirões. O presente estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar a influência de T. angustifolia para a ictiofauna em riachos. Foram estudados seis riachos na bacia do Alto Rio Turvo, Estado de São Paulo, desprovidos de vegetação ripária nativa, mas com abundância de T. angustifolia no hábitat interno e ripário. Por meio da análise de mapas de cobertura do solo, observou-se que T. angustifolia está amplamente distribuída nas zonas ripárias ao longo das drenagens estudadas. Os riachos com as maiores proporções de T. angustifolia nas zonas ripárias também apresentaram a menor riqueza de espécies e abundância de peixes. A baixa semelhança na composição e estrutura da ictiofauna entre os períodos sazonais, a grande quantidade de espécies tolerantes e o fato de que a maioria das espécies foi ou acessória ou acidental, sugerem uma dinâmica populacional do tipo “fonte e dreno” nos riachos estudados. Desta forma, os trechos livres de Typha atuam como “fontes”, provendo indivíduos que, por migração, podem ocasionalmente explorar os trechos com elevada abundância de T. angustifolia. Nestes trechos, que teriam o papel funcional de “drenos”, as condições ambientais são pouco apropriadas para a manutenção de uma comunidade diversa e residente de peixes. Os indivíduos dos trechos “fonte” à montante e à jusante que para ali migram se beneficiam de uma oferta relativamente constante de alimento, embora pouco variada (principalmente larvas aquáticas de Chironomidae e detritos), e abrigos (raízes de Typha). / Aquatic plants are a major component of lenthic and lotic ecosystems. As consequences of environmental changes, some species may became dominant, being that aquatic plants of the genus Typha are a well successful group of weeds in swamps and flooded areas, but also found in headwaters and large streams. This study was made with the aim to investigate the influences of T. angustifolia on the fish assemblages in streams. A total of six streams in the Upper Rio Turvo basin, São Paulo state, without riparian vegetation but with abundance of T. angustifolia in the instream and riparian habitat, were studied. By analyzing soil coverage maps, it was registered that T. angustifolia was widespread in the riparian zones along studied drainages. Streams with the largest proportions of T. angustifolia along riparian zones were also those with lowest fish species richness and abundance. Low similarity in the composition and structure of fish fauna between seasonal periods, together with a large number of tolerant species, and the fact that most species are accessory or accidental, suggest a “source and sink” population dynamic in the studied streams. Thus, free Typha stretches play as a “source” habitat, providing individuals that, by migration, may occasionally explore stretches with large abundance of T. angustifolia. In these stretches, which play a “sink” functional role, environmental conditions are often little appropriated to the maintenance of a diverse and resident fish assemblage. The migrating individuals from up and down “source” stretches are benefited by relatively constant food offer, but few diverse (mostly aquatic larvae of Chironomidae and detritus), and shelters (Typha roots).

Besides, plant management adopted can influence the plant responses under conditions of low water availability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of drought stress on the growth and biomass partitioning of soybean in different growth stages. Four experiments were carried in greenhouse conditions. The first work evaluated changes in growth of soybean subjected to drought stress during reproductive development stages. This experiment was performed with NS 4823 cultivar subjected to drought stress for 10 days (without water) during R1 to R7 reproductive phenologic stages. In the end period of pea formation and grain filling of plants in drought stress the relative water content wasn t kept and stature growth rates, leaf area and node numbers were reduced. The lower sensitivity to drought stress in reproductive stage was related to the ability to maintain the relative water content in leaves and to increase root/shoot ratio. The second experiment determined the responses in morphology and partition of assimilate in soybean subjected to drought stress during reproductive stages. This work was conducted with two cultivars, BMX Magna and BMX Potência RR, subjected to drought stress for 10 days (without water) during R1 to R7 phenologic stages. The drought stress in the end of reproductive stages, such as pod formation and grain filling, reduces the sink strength because reduces pod and grain numbers, and reduces the source strength due to reduced shoot dry mass. The aim of third experiment was to evaluate if the use of gypsum would be effective to reduce drought stress effects in grain filling. This experiment was conducted with NA 5909 RR cultivar subjected to drought stress and gypsum doses of 0 and 6 Mg ha-1 on surface and 6 Mg ha-1 incorporated. In soils with low aluminum concentration the gypsum was effective to reduce drought stress in R5 stage of soybean, because promotes root growth on subsurface through increasing in calcium and decreasing in aluminum concentrations. The aim of fourth experiment was evaluate if K would be effective in drought stress mitigation during begging vegetative development. This experiment was conducted with BMX Turbo RR cultivar subjected to drought stress for 12 days and K doses of 0, 30 and 60 mg dm-3. Early K supplementation on soybean developmental stages increased drought stress tolerance through increasing in root length density and root specific mass / Os efeitos da restrição hídrica no crescimento e na partição de biomassa das plantas dependem da intensidade e duração do período de restrição hídrica e do momento em que ocorre no ciclo da cultura. Além disso, o manejo adotado na cultura pode influenciar nas respostas da planta sob condições de baixa disponibilidade hídrica. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da restrição hídrica no crescimento e partição de biomassa da soja em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento. Para isso, foram realizados quatro experimentos conduzidos em casa de vegetação. O primeiro trabalho avaliou as alterações no crescimento da soja submetida à restrição hídrica nos estádios reprodutivos do desenvolvimento. Este experimento foi realizado com a cultivar NS 4823 RR submetida à restrição hídrica imposta por 10 dias (sem irrigação) iniciando-se sempre em cada um dos estádios fenológicos reprodutivos desde R1 ao R7. No período final de formação de vagens e no enchimento de grãos das plantas em restrição hídrica o conteúdo relativo de água na folha não foi mantido e as taxas de crescimento de estatura, área foliar e número de nós foram reduzidos. A menor sensibilidade nos estádios iniciais do desenvolvimento reprodutivo a restrição hídrica foi relacionada à capacidade de manter o conteúdo relativo de água nas folhas e aumentar a relação raiz parte aérea. O segundo experimento determinou as respostas na morfologia e na partição dos assimilados na soja submetida à restrição hídrica nos estádios reprodutivos. O experimento foi realizado com duas cultivares, BMX Magna e BMX Potência RR, submetidas à restrição hídrica imposta por 10 dias (sem irrigação) nos estádios fenológicos de R1 a R7. A restrição de água no período final de formação de vagens e enchimento de grãos reduz a força de dreno, pois reduz o número de vagens e de grãos, e reduz a força de fonte devido à redução da massa seca de parte aérea. O terceiro experimento teve com o objetivo determinar se o uso do gesso seria efetivo na redução dos efeitos da deficiência hídrica no enchimento de grãos. O experimento foi realizado com a cultivar NA 5909 RR submetida a restrição hídrica e as doses de gesso 0 Mg ha-1, 6 Mg ha-1 na superfície e 6 Mg ha-1 incorporado. Em solos com baixa concentração de alumínio o gesso foi efetivo na redução da deficiência hídrica no estádio R5, pois promove o crescimento radicular em subsuperfície através do incremento nas concentrações de cálcio e redução no alumínio. O quarto experimento objetivou determinar se o K seria efetivo na mitigação da restrição hídrica no início do desenvolvimento vegetativo. O experimento foi realizado com a cultivar BMX Turbo RR submetida à restrição hídrica por 12 dias e a doses de 0 mg dm-3, 30 mg dm-3 e 60 mg dm-3 de K. A suplementação precoce de K no desenvolvimento da soja aumentou a tolerância à restrição hídrica, através do aumento da densidade de comprimento de raiz e do peso específico de raiz
