Dynamic light structures : the aesthetic and performative qualities of solid light scenography for performance and installationHurst, Andrew January 2017 (has links)
This practice as research thesis centres on the use of light projected through theatrical haze as a method of creating tangible, volumetric objects within a performance or installation space. The practice seeks to define light as a physical object, not simply an illuminating force but as a material in its own right, and in doing so examines the relationships built between that physically perceived light and the performer, the installation participant, the audience and the choreographer. The term Dynamic Light Structure has been coined here as a way to identify light perceived as a solid object, and to describe a sense of movement, reconfiguration and agency. Although the use of theatrical haze for performance lighting design is an accepted and ubiquitous technique used in the pursuit of conditioning a stage space, the resultant volumetric forms that appear when light is introduced to that conditioned space have not been examined in terms other than those relating to design methodology. This thesis moves beyond discourse that explores light as a design tool by placing the Dynamic Light Structure at the heart of the performance and installation experience. The research establishes the relationships that are built between Dynamic Light Structures and audience members, installation visitors and choreographers. In examining participant reception and practitioner process, the research defines how Dynamic Light Structures are perceived as autonomous stage objects in dialogue with a live performer, as manipulable objects used to redefine an environment and as process tools that can shape the trajectory of performance making.

This PhD-work is about nuclear physics for low and intermediate energies, the incident energy from tens MeV to energies about the Fermi-energy. This work consists essentially in the development of microscopic models describing the N-body nuclear problem, the main goal is to provide some theoretical tools adapted to the study of phenomena linked to international experimental programs such as LNL-FAZIA, GANILSpiral 2, GSI-FAIR and LBL-FRIB. These new experiments will produce high-quality radioactive beams that will provide us to explore nuclear matter far from stability, especially in isospin and therefore to progress in the comprehension of fundamental interactions. Interdisciplinary applications in the field of compact stars can be envisaged as due to this work. Indeed, astrophysics and nuclear physics are two disciplines that intertwine inextricably. In particular, experiments with new radioactive beams will enable us to obtain information on rare isotopes having an important role in astrophysical processes and to answer basic questions about the nature of neutron stars.

The labour of feminist performance : postfeminism, authenticity, and celebrity in contemporary representations of girlhood on screenSeaton, Wallis Anne January 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines the labour that is made visible by the individual on-screen performances of five distinct postfeminist identities from contemporary popular culture. Each chapter focuses on one of three texts: the English-language film adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011); The Hunger Games film adaptations (2012-2015); and HBO’s cable-television series, Girls (2012-2017); as well as the girl figures at the centre of them: Lisbeth Salander; Katniss Everdeen/ Jennifer Lawrence; and Lena Dunham/Hannah Horvath. In these analyses I identify two marked strands of work acting as a conceptual thread that harnesses the potential of these gendered performances: firstly, the narrative, thematic, aesthetic, and representational work of the texts, which complicate current ideological and conceptual understandings of girlhood, feminism, and postfeminism; secondly, the cultural and ideological work of the magnetic identities of the girls at the centre of these texts, who help to bring these politics to the surface. The texts and the performances that inform my analyses are often associated with feminism, although the value of this work is often contradictory in nature, both questioned and reinforced by virtue of the performative, creative labour that underpins their authentic, yet commodified, representations. In the case of Lawrence and Dunham, this concerns their work as celebrities and how they mediate feminist ideas through their branded performance. The main objective of this thesis, then, is to demonstrate how each of the identities in this corpus effectively open out the tensions involved in performing feminism in twenty-first century culture, and thus to render the gendered labour attendant with this as politically imperative towards current understandings. This is an interdisciplinary study, drawing on scholarship from film, media, celebrity, gender, and cultural studies in order to grapple with the complexities and myriad meanings of contemporary feminism in the broader context of media culture.

A Tiling Approach to Chebyshev PolynomialsWalton, Daniel 01 May 2007 (has links)
We present a combinatorial interpretation of Chebyshev polynomials. The nth Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind, Tn(x), counts the sum of all weights of n-tilings using light and dark squares of weight x and dominoes of weight −1, and the first tile, if a square must be light. If we relax the condition that the first square must be light, the sum of all weights is the nth Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind, Un(x). In this paper we prove many of the beautiful Chebyshev identities using the tiling interpretation.

Due to the uranium natural resource depletion and the high growth in energy requirements, the fourth-generation nuclear power plants, with FNR, which involve the uranium and plutonium recycling, can be a future appropriate industrial route. Nonetheless, these evolutions modify potentially the spent fuel reprocessing. Furthermore, U(VI) and Pu(IV) precipitation, without any valency adjustment, would provide an answer to the efficiency and safety demands. In this context, the present work is interested in new organic ligands research allowing the quantitative precipitation of uranium(VI) and plutonium (IV) in a concentrated acid medium. The whole studies led to the identification of new organic ligands, and these new ligands are able to massively precipitate uranium(VI) in a nitric acid medium. Among these identified molecules, the oxalic acid/NCP ligands association has been used to precipitate both of these two actinides. A determination of the precipitate has been done in order to identify the structures and the morphologies of the precipitate. The solubility measurements over time have allowed to assess the fast precipitating kinetic and the very low solubility of the precipitated component. Finally, the thermal treatment of the precipitate gives rise to the formation of actinides oxides whose properties match the requirements of the fuel shaping step. The extension of these results made it possible to offer an innovating conversion process of both actinides in a nitric acid medium and that without any valency adjustment, which fit to all the conditions of the requirement specifications of the spent fuel reprocessing for the fourth generation of nuclear reactors.

Expression av PSI-N från Arabidopsis thaliana i E : coliEk, Louise, Halltorp, Marielle January 2008 (has links)

PSI-N is one of the subunits in eukaryotic Photosystem I (PSI) and is located on the lumenal side of the thylakoid membrane. It is known to interact in the electron transport chain between plastocyanin and PSI, but the mechanism behind the interaction is still unclear. To achieve a better understanding of PSI-N´s role in the photosynthesis it is necessary to develop a method for purification of PSI-N. The goal with this project was to design a plasmid that encodes a fusion protein containing PSI-N. With use of proteases the fusion protein can be cleaved into purified PSI-N. The initial material was cDNA, encoding PsaN from Arabidopsis thaliana, this was cloned into a pET32a Xa/LIC vector (from Novagen). The vector was then transformed into a Escherichia coli (E. coli) host. Finally the fusion protein was expressed and successfully isolated.
