Social Capital, Private Entrepreneurs and Business Associations in China: The Case of All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce

Lee, Tsung Yi Unknown Date (has links)
Guanxi capital under socialism has been the critical determining criteria of resource redistribution in China, but how it evolves in the postsocialist era has not been well understood. This paper intends to examine the impact of guanxi capital on success achievements of private enterprises. The author shows that the market reform has not made the significance of guanxi capital decline but institutionalized “guanxi” in business associations. Examining the most important private business association, All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC) in China, the purpose of this paper is to explore the incentive structure of private entrepreneurs' participation in business associations. I argue that the ACFIC has become the efficient and effective bridge in private entrepreneurs' structural holes so private entrepreneurs with ACFIC membership can maximize their opportunities by the information and control benefits. Besides, ACFIC is one of the “basic components” of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. The endorsement of CCP leads ACFIC to the top in China's administrative hierarchy of private business associations. The representative position provides private entrepreneurs institutional route to negotiate the party state, local government and local cadres for their businesses. Based on the field study in Wenzhou, Zhejiang and Honghe, Yunnan, the business network surrounding ACFIC and private entrepreneurs' strategies of accumulating social capital in ACFIC will be analyzed.

Identification of Force Coefficients in Two Squeeze Film Dampers with a Central Groove

Seshagiri, Sanjeev 2011 May 1900 (has links)
Squeeze Film Dampers (SFD) provide viscous damping in rotor bearing systems to reduce lateral vibration amplitudes and to isolate mechanical components. Aircraft engine shafts, often supported on roller bearings, operate at high rotational speeds and are susceptible to large amplitude shaft whirl due to rotor imbalance. SFDs aid to reduce such large whirl amplitudes while also eliminating rotor instabilities. he current work quantifies experimentally the forced performance of two parallel squeeze SFDs separated by a central groove. Force coefficients are identified in a specialized SFD test rig constructed to undergo similar operating and loading conditions as in jet engines. Of interest is to quantify the effect of a central feed groove on the forced performance of SFDs and to validate predictions from a computational tool. The test rig comprises of an elastically supported bearing structure and one of two journals. Tests are conducted on two open ends SFDs, both with diameter D and nominal radial clearance c; each damper with two parallel film land lengths L= 1/5 D and 2L, separated by a feed groove of width L and depth 3/4 L. ISO VG 2 grade lubricant oil flows into the central groove via 3 orifices, 120 degrees apart, and then through the film lands to finally exit to ambient. In operation, a static loader pulls the bearing to various static off center positions with respect to the stationary journal, and electromagnetic shakers (2,200 N) excite the test system with single frequency loads over a frequency range to generate rectilinear, circular and elliptical orbits with specified motion amplitudes. A frequency domain method identifies the SFD mechanical parameters, viz., stiffness, damping, and added mass coefficients. The long damper generates 7 times more direct damping and 2 times more added mass compared to the short length damper. The damping coefficients are sensitive to the static eccentricity (up to 50 percent c) while showing lesser dependency on the amplitude of whirl motion (up to 20 percent c). On the other hand, added mass coefficients are nearly constant with static eccentricity and decrease with higher amplitudes of motion. The magnitudes of identified cross-coupled coefficients are insignificant for all imposed operating conditions for either damper. Large dynamic pressures recorded in the central groove demonstrate the groove does not isolate the film lands by merely acting as a source of lubricant, but contributes to the generation of large added mass coefficients. The recorded dynamic pressures in the film lands and central groove do not evidence lubricant vapor or gas cavitation for the tested static eccentricities and amplitudes of motion. The direct damping coefficients for both dampers are independent of excitation frequency over the frequency range of the tests. Predictions derived from a novel SFD computational tool that includes flow interactions in the central groove and oil supply orifices agree well with the experimental force coefficients for both dampers. The current work advances the state of the art in SFDs for jet engines.

台灣IC產業專利發明人的合作網絡機制 / Innovation Mechanisms of the Patent-Based Inventor Networks in Taiwan IC Industry

Guan, Yi Ren Unknown Date (has links)
The IC (integrated circuit) industry has been the most complete, competitive and innovative industry in Taiwan over the past three decades. The rapid growth of patents in this field demonstrates the marvelous outcomes of technological innovations. A huge amount of patent-based research has been accumulated in this industry, but only a little is related to the inventor network. Structural holes and status signal are two competing perspectives in explaining the dynamic mechanisms between innovative actors and network systems of the most innovative industries, semiconductor and biotechnology, in advanced countries. We use these two theories and network data of patent-based inventors to discuss the specific niche of vertical disintegration and fluid labor market in Taiwan IC industry, and develop models on mechanisms of how inventors’ networks affect the outcome of inventors’ patents. The findings reveal that the hypothesis on the effects of status signals and structural holes in inventors’ collaboration networks on the citations of inventors’ patents was supported. However, the patent inventions of the upstream IC design firms, the collaborative invention teams seem to be small or high structural constraints. Most of the patents of these newly growing firms in IC design industry are specialized in consumption products. The structural constraints are high, but the impact of is large. Besides, inventors’ fluidity would not necessarily create more influential patents. The fluidity of patent-based inventors was positive impact to the patent inventions, more was found in the IC designs company. The IC industry has been vertically differentiated into three sectors: the IC designs, the IC foundry, the package and test. In principle, these three sectors demand different levels of technology. The maturity of technological niches will affect the impacts of the patents.

The derivation and quasinormal mode spectrum of acoustic anti-de sitter black hole analogues

Babb, James Patrick 08 March 2013 (has links)
Dumb holes (also known as acoustic black holes) are fluid flows which include an "acoustic horizon:" a surface, analogous to a gravitational horizon, beyond which sound may pass but never classically return. Soundwaves in these flows will therefore experience "effective geometries" which are identical to black hole spacetimes up to a conformal factor. By adjusting the parameters of the fluid flow, it is possible to create an effective geometry which is conformal to the Anti-de Sitter black hole spacetime- a geometry which has recieved a great deal of attention in recent years due to its conjectured holographic duality to Conformal Field Theories. While we would not expect an acoustic analogue of the AdS-CFT correspondence to exist, this dumb hole provides a means, at least in principle, of experimentally testing the theoretical properties of the AdS spacetime. In particular, I have calculated the quasinormal mode spectrum of this acoustic geometry. / Graduate / 0986 / 0753 / jpbabb@yahoo.ca

Μυλωνάς, Διονύσιος 07 July 2010 (has links)
In the linear version of the general theory of relativity, one considers metric perturbations around a fixed background. Keeping terms up to first order of perturbation leads to the linearized Einstein equations. In this framework it has been proved that a duality between the various elements of the Weyl tensor holds. This duality is similar to the one between the electric and magnetic fluxes of Maxwell's electromagnetism. In the present work we review the status of these dualities for non trivial backgrounds. We examine the Anti-de Sitter background, where we point out the way to explicitly construct dual configurations using the metric perturbation expressions. Using the holographic renormalization technique, we examine the conformal boundary where a duality between the components of the energy-momentum tensor and the Cotton tensor of the corresponding Chern - Simons theory holds. It is then proved that this duality is a direct consequence of the electric/magnetic duality in the bulk, in the case of the AdS background. Finally, we apply same procedure to the Schwarzschild - Anti-de Sitter background, where the presence of the black hole changes the boundary conditions of the problem. This simple fact makes it impossible say whether such a duality exists in this case. Nevertheless, we find that a duality similar to that of the AdS background still holds for the conformal boundary, which means that there is a remnant of symmetry from the linear theory. We conclude with comments and a extensive discussion on possible future directions.

Réduction des niveaux vibratoires d'un panneau au moyen de trous noirs acoustiques structurés en réseau périodique : conception d'une méta-plaque / Reduction of the vibrational levels of a panel by means of acoustic black holes structured in a periodic lattice : design of a meta-plate

Aklouche, Omar 27 October 2017 (has links)
The "Acoustic Black Hole" (ABH) is a passive device of reducing vibrations of structures without increasing their mass. It consists in a local thinning of the structure, coated with a thin layer of viscoelastic material. The ABH effect results from the local increase in vibratory magnitude, which strongly solicits the coating, giving rise to local significant damping. A detailed analysis of the mechanisms of dissipation of the ABH is carried out : the scattering of bending waves by an ABH is studied when the latter is inserted in an infinite thin plate. It is shown that the coating induces a significant local damping, allowing to significantly increase the global damping. The ABH is especially effective at high frequencies(HF), it is periodized on a plate to take advantage of the band gaps effect at low frequencies (LF). Two lattices (square and triangular) are studied numerically by the PWE method and experimentally by measuring vibratory mobilities. The results show that the plate is damped at the same time in LF by the lattice effect and in HF by the ABH effect.

Abstract: In this thesis, we will study the problem of a thin ring of matter of constant density with a central Kerr black hole. The aim of this work is to solve the Einstein equations in the vacuum with axial symmetry for that gravitational system. To do the nonlinear superposition of the ring with the black hole (BH), we used the Belinsky and Zakharov method (BZM). This method needs a known solution (called seed solution) to generate a new one. We took the Newtonian ring potential approximated by a multipolar expansion as seed solution. As result, we obtained the solution of a ring with a central BH. The ring multipolar expansion demands the truncation of the series. This approach introduces an error in our solution. Estimations of errors due to the truncation of the multipolar expansions are performed. We also studied the stability of equatorial circular orbits of particles moving around the system ring plus BH due to epicycle and vertical perturbations. We analyzed those perturbations for relativistic and Newtonian gravitational models. As result, we found the unexpected effect of the duplication of the photons circular orbits for certain values of parameters related with the ring and BH, as well as zones of stability in the inner area of the matter ring. / Doutorado / Relatividade e Gravitação / Doutor em Ciências

Nabité částice v prostoročasech s elektromagnetickým polem / Charged particles in spacetimes with an electromagnetic field

Veselý, Jiří January 2017 (has links)
The subject of study of this thesis is the Kerr-Newman-(anti-)de Sitter space- time, a rotating and charged exact black-hole solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a non-zero cosmological constant. In the first part of the thesis we examine admissible extremal configurations, present the corresponding Penrose diagrams, and investigate the effects of frame-dragging. In the second part, we follow the motion of charged particles via the Lagrangian formalism, focusing on the equatorial plane and the axis where we arrived at some analytic results con- cerning the trajectories. Static particles, effective potentials and - in the case of the equatorial plane - stationary circular orbits are examined. We also perform numerical simulations of particle motion to be able to check our analytic results and also to foster our intuition regarding the behaviour of the test particles. The last part concerns quantum tunnelling of particles through the space-time's hori- zons, specifically the null geodesic method. The main goal of these computations is to obtain horizon temperatures, in which we succeed up to a constant multi- plicative factor. We discuss various pitfalls of the method and stake out a possible approach when applying it to the extreme horizons present in KN(a)dS. 1

Periodically Perforated Sheets : Design And analysis

Gotkhindi, Tejas Prakash 07 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Periodically perforated sheets(PS) are ubiquitous in nature as well as in engineered artifacts developed for aerospace, automotive, marine, nuclear and structural applications. PS are indispensable for saving weight and cost for aircraft; for enhancing safety and integrity of heat exchangers used in nuclear and thermal power stations. Ancient PS grills and lattice frames dating back to 1000 BC continue to inspire contemporary art and architecture, buildings and furniture. PS design and analysis, however, is a complex affair stemming from the inherent configurational anisotropy induced by periodicity. In addition, complex boundary conditions complicate the analysis. Unlike atoms in crystalline media, both shape and periodicity of perforations control this anisotropic nature. This thesis explores theoretical and numerical strategies for evaluating the effective anisotropic elastic moduli of PS. Following an experimental prelude for visualizing the PS stress field in a photoelastic sheet and a brief review of PS theory, this thesis proposes a novel theoretical numerical hybrid method for determining the Airy stress function constants. The proposed hybrid method can be exploited experimentally using automated vision based imaging technologies to measure the boundary displacements noninvasively. For determining the Airy constants periodic boundary conditions to the unit cell are applied, the displacement components around the PS hole boundary are obtained using FEM. Using these constants the PS stress field is reconstructed to assess the efficacy of the proposed hybrid method. It is observed that in general while the actual and the reconstructed stress fields agree reasonably well, more refined boundary data obtained either numerically or experimentally can enhance the accuracy further. The thesis then makes an extensive presentation of anisotropic moduli in a variety of PS designs configured on rectangular or square layouts. Conventional as well as some exotic patterns with cusps and satellite holes are examined, and the results are presented graphically to aid the designer. Finally, some special topics pertaining PS design and analysis are discussed to help overcome the inherent limitations of solutions based on applying periodic boundary conditions. In this vein, strategies for achieving a functionally graded PS are presented by altering the pitch and hole size. These strategies assume importance near boundaries as well as near concentrated forces inducing stress gradients. Other special topics include the applicability of tensor transformation rule to PS anisotropy. The effective bulk modulus which remains a scalar invariant is exploited to assess the validity of tensor transformation in a square PS. The rule of mixture widely used in homogenization of composite media is also discussed briefly. Thus, this thesis makes an attempt to demonstrate the power of blending micromechanics with experiments and FEM to aid in PS design and analysis.
