Improving Transient Stability Using Generator Tripping Based on Kinetic Energy and Impedance Gap Methods

Lin, Hong-Ru 23 June 2005 (has links)
Due to the consideration of economic dispatch or system operation, the regional severe unbalance between power generation and load demand will introduce large amount of power flow over the inter-area tie lines. The tripping of transmission lines due to power system fault contingency will result in the increase of power flow over the inter-area tie lines, which may violate the constraint of transient stability. The whole power system could be collapsed due to further tripping of more generators unless proper remedy actions are executed in tie. This thesis proposes an effective approach to determine the generators to be tripped for power system protection. All of the generators in the power system are divided into critical group and non-critical group based on the methods of Energy-gap and Impedance-gap. The power flow capability limit of transmission lines on inter-areas have been derived by transient stability analysis. Once fault contingency occurs on the power system, the power flow of transmission lines on inter-area is compared to the above transmission limit to determine the generators in the critical group to be tripped. By this way, the stable operation of power system can be maintained after the contingency. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, the Taipower system is selected for computer simulation to verify the generator tripping by system transient stability analysis. Different scenarios of system fault contingencies on primary EHV substations with various power flow conditions over the inter-area tie lines have been investigated to confirm the power system performance by applying the proposed generator tripping.

Research on the Gap Metric Controller for LTI Systems

Chiu, Tsan-Hsun 20 July 2001 (has links)
In this paper, the gap metric is introduced to study the robustness of the stability of feedback systems. A relation between the gap metric and coprime fractions is also investigated. It is shown that the stability radius of the controller in the gap metric is equal to the stability margin of the controller. In the loop-shaping design procedure in the £h-gap metric, it is practically hard to formulate an ideal controller. Finally, this paper studied the conservatism of the gap metric, and proposed some properties that can help for control design and analysis.

Κόλλιας, Μάριος 09 October 2014 (has links)
The equipment and conductors that "carry" high voltage are taking specific values of security and control. Using the term, hyper-voltage, the researchers mean those voltages that appear in electricity networks and they usually have a width value greater than the normal operating voltage. Most of the times, hyper-voltages are typically have irregular form and they are capable of causing large dielectric stresses in the insulation of a system. When designing an insulation system there are two very important parameters that have to be taken under consideration by the manufacturers: 1) The determination of a voltage form that stresses the insulation equipment 2) The determination of the insulation resistance when there is strain from specific voltage forms. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the voltage stress that is happening in a 6cm gap of pin-plate which was inserted by removable diaphragm. The conclusions drawn are concerning the study of breakdown voltage and how it changes with respect to the geometry of the gap and the atmospheric conditions. One conclusion that arises from the stress analysis of the pin-plate gap is that when the diaphragm is moving away from the pin the breakdown voltage is decreasing. It is also worth noting that as the diaphragm is moving towards the pin, the breakdown phenomenon is becoming less random. This means that the design of an insulation system can be made more accurate. Another conclusion is related to the discrepancy in the values of U50% between different sets of measurements. The distance between the diaphragm and the spike is influencing the above observation. This discrepancy is due to several factors. The first factor is related to the small change of weather conditions during the different sets of measurements. The second factor is related to the possible jumps that occurred during the voltage imposition in the gap.

In Search of an Electrophysiological Correlate to Between-Channel Modulation Gap Detection

Mulle, Jennifer 12 March 2012 (has links)
Auditory processing disorder (APD) is characterized by deficits in the auditory modality that are not due to a global processing problem or to deficiencies in the peripheral auditory system. Diagnosis of APD is time-consuming and could benefit from an objective test. Temporal processing ability is often impaired in cases of APD, which includes deficits on gap detection tasks. Previous attempts to correlate gap detection thresholds to electrophysiological responses have used the P1-N1-P2 response, mismatch negativity (MMN), and 40 Hz auditory steady-state response (ASSR), but these attempts have not been successful, especially using between-channel gap detection tasks. The current study used a modulation gap detection task and recorded the above responses to supra- and subthreshold gaps and stimuli with no gap. A significant P2 response and a later positive peak distinguished perception of a suprathreshold gap. Improvements over previous studies, the relation to auditory training, and limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

Einfluss der endothelialen Connexine auf die Angiogenese

Gärtner-Grätz, Christiane 07 April 2015 (has links) (PDF)

Maternity Risk and the Lesbian Pay Gap: Evidence from the U.S. Decennial Census and American Community Survey

Skilling, Hayden January 2014 (has links)
Prior research from the U.S. and abroad reveals a sizable lesbian earnings advantage over otherwise-similar heterosexual women. Using data from the 2000 U.S. Census and 2005-2010 American Community Surveys, we estimate traditional earnings equations and find robust evidence of a lesbian premium, corroborating the findings of previous studies. Using within-sample maternity incidence as an estimate of employers' forward-looking expectations, we then examine whether differences in the perceived likelihood of an employee requiring maternity leave, here-labelled 'maternity risk', contribute to the lesbian pay gap. Results from a direct assessment suggest that maternity risk adversely affects income, and that accounting for near-term differences in maternity risk reduces the lesbian premium by approximately ten to fifteen percent. Further analyses, using proxy variables for differential maternity risk, yield similar results. As such, the persistent finding of a lesbian earnings advantage in previous studies can be attributed, at least in part, to employers' aversion to maternity risk and its associated costs. These findings are also of critical importance to the general labour-market discrimination literature. Given the adverse earnings effect of maternity risk, our analysis suggests that estimates of the well-established gender earnings disparity are likely to be considerably smaller when incorporating maternity risk into the analysis. Absent the ability to adequately control for maternity risk, strict attention should be paid to potential upward bias in estimated earnings differentials. Moreover, policymakers should consider the broader implications of maternity-leave policy on the labour-market outcomes of females. In this respect, maternity-leave policy may influence the hiring and promotion decisions of employers, thereby indirectly affecting sexual-orientation and gender equality in the labour market. However, further research in this area is still required, given the limitations inherent in the direct and indirect analyses.

Ultrasound propagation through complex media with strong scattering resonances

Lee, Eric Jin Ser 21 August 2014 (has links)
The propagation of ultrasound through two- and three-dimensional strongly scattering media, with either random or ordered internal structures, has been investigated through experiments and finite element simulations. All media investigated have strong scattering resonances, leading to novel transport behaviour. The two-dimensional samples consist of nylon rods immersed in water. When the nylon rods are arranged in a triangular lattice to form two-dimensional phononic crystals, very unusual dispersion properties are observed when the lattice constant is adjusted so that Bragg and hybridization gaps overlap in frequency. This behaviour is attributed to the competition between two co-existing propagating modes, leading to a new method for tuning bandgap properties and adjusting the transmission by orders of magnitude. The scattering resonance of the nylon rods also leads to unusual Dirac cone properties at the K point of the triangular lattice. The three-dimensional media were fabricated by brazing aluminum beads together to form a disordered porous solid network, with either vacuum or air in the pores, depending on the experiment. This system is of particular interest because it has been shown to exhibit Anderson localization of ultrasound. Two experimental approaches were developed to investigate previously unstudied properties of this system. By directly counting the modes in the frequency domain, the density of states was measured. At intermediate frequencies, the density of states was found to be approximately independent of frequency, while at higher frequencies, the frequency dependence was consistent with traditional density-of-states models. The level statistics of the modes was also investigated to determine the conditions under which level repulsion occurs. By using a laser interferometer to measure the ultrasonic displacements on the surface of a large slab-shaped sample, sub-diffusive behaviour was observed, demonstrating the feasibility of using such measurements to investigate the transition to Anderson localization in these samples.

Vertical stratification and species composition of Nymphalidae butterfly assemblages in tree-fall gaps and understory in Madidi National Park, Bolivia

Skarped, Linnéa January 2014 (has links)
Rainforest is a dynamic ecosystem where species are affected by numerous biotic and abiotic factors. One important abiotic factor for many species is the availability of sunlight. The understory habitat under the closed undisturbed canopy is comparably constant with regard to sunlight and therefore also humidity and temperature. The canopy regulates the amount of sunlight that will reach the ground, which means that changes in canopy cover will change the understory environment. The main natural disturbances that affect the structure of rainforest are tree falls, that resulting in tree-fall gaps. The aim of this study was to compare the vertical stratification and species composition of fruit-feeding Nymphalidae butterflies between tree-fall gaps of different sizes and undisturbed understory in a primary rainforest in Madidi National Park, Bolivia. Fruit-baited traps were suspended at ground level (2 m) and in canopy (10-15 m) in 5 tree-fall gaps and adjacent undisturbed understory, a total of 40 traps. There were more species rich assemblages in gaps both at ground level and in canopy, compared to understory. The data show that there are different species assemblages in tree-fall gaps, undisturbed understory, canopy and at ground level. The vegetation structure affected by the amount of sun light was an important factor affecting butterfly assemblages. There was a tendency that differences among gap assemblages increased with gap size. These results indicate the importance of the mosaic pattern caused by natural tree-fall gaps, they contain specific resources that favor different butterfly assemblages.

The semantic approach as an anti-physicalist renewal of the explanatory gap problem in contemporary philosophy of mind

Canning, Adrienne 02 January 2014 (has links)
Contemporary philosopher, Joseph Levine, has argued that human phenomenological experience cannot be explained solely through the resources of neuroscience, and that a significant ‘explanatory gap’ exists between the rich features of human experience and scientific explanations of the mind. This thesis examines Guiseppina D’Oro’s novel suggestion that the gap exists, but that it is a semantic rather than an empirical problem. D’Oro argues that the ‘gap’ is a persistent philosophical problem because of its semantic nature, and that advances in neuroscience will fail to resolve the gap because its source is a conceptual distinction that is not marked by empirical difference. In the thesis I will discuss some virtues and difficulties with D’Oro’s thesis, and the implications her claim has more broadly for philosophers of mind. / Graduate / 0422

Mind the Gap : A study of the student-audit expectation gap and factors affecting it

Nordenson, Malin, Lehmann, Niclas January 2015 (has links)
This study explore the expectation gap between students and audit practitioners, and if certain factors have any significant impact on the students conformity to the practitioners expectations. The study is limited to business students and audit practitioners. We used an Independent Sam-ples T-Test and Pearson Correlation Analysis to conduct the analysis of 286 student responses and 98 practitioner responses. The results confirm previous research; the expectation gap exists. The findings concerning the relationship between factors and students conformity were some-what inconsistent. However, we found a statistically significant proof that students with work-life, trainee and internship experiences conformed better to audit practitioners. Our study offers further insight to the subject of the expectation gap by suggesting that some factors, such as internship experiences, can improve students’ conformity to audit practitioners regarding the importance of skills.
