Ett på allvar integrerat svenskämne? : En studie av uppgiftskulturen i läromedlet Känslan för ord. / A truly integrative Swedish subject? : A study of the exercise culture in the teaching media Känslan för ord.Larsson, Nina January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to analyze and problematize the content in the teaching media Känslan för ord through an integrative perspective. This is done by using two sets of questions based on two of the didactic questions what and how. How is the content of the Swedish subject constructed in Känslan för ord? and How is this content integrated in Känslan för ord? The used material consists of a fairly large amount of literature which provides different approaches, priorities, and methods about the Swedish subject. This literature forms the base for the model used to analyze the course books. The results are based on an analysis of the exercise culture (uppgiftskultur) in the two books and are extensive. All together the two books contain 866 exercises. The results point to several imperfections in order to become an integrative subject. There is a large play between text comprehension and the rest of the subject’s proficiencies: IT, sociolinguistics, argumentation and critical thinking are represented in a very small amount. A majority of the exercises are non-authentic and the contact with real life is missing. The merits in the teaching media are the text selection that mirrors a great deal of the classical literature as well as the modern literature. These texts often result in the students writing on their own. If the desire is to work with an integrative subject based on the course book Känslan för ord is as good as any. / Uppsatsen syfte är att analysera och problematisera läromedlet Känslan för ords innehåll utifrån ett integrationsperspektiv med hjälp av två frågeställningar, utarbetade efter två av de didaktiska frågorna, vad och hur. Hur konstrueras svenskämnets innehåll i Känslan för ord? samt Hur integreras detta innehåll i Känslan för ord? Materialet består av en relativt stor mängd litteratur där olika synsätt, prioriteringar och metoder kring svenskämnet läggs fram. Dessa bildar grunden för den analysmall som kursböckerna analyseras utifrån. Resultaten bygger på en analys av uppgiftskulturen i läroböckerna vilken är omfattande. Tillsammans innehåller de båda böckerna 866 frågor. Resultaten uppvisar flera allvarliga brister för att vara ett integrerat ämne. Det är ett stort glapp mellan textförståelse och övriga ämneskunskaper; IT-vana, språksociologi, argumentation och kritiskt tänkande finns nästan inte med alls. En stor majoritet av de frågor som ställs är icke-autentiska frågor där verklighetsanknytning saknas. Förtjänsterna i läromedlet är texturvalet som speglar en stor del av den klassiska och aktuella litteraturen liksom hur dessa ofta leder till att eleverna ska skriva på egen hand. Vill man arbeta med ett integrerat ämne utifrån en lärobok så är Känslan för ord så god som någon.

Perspectives of northern researchers, residents and educators on science education and outreach in Yukon, CanadaRoss, Frances K P 09 March 2012 (has links)
International Polar Year 2007-2008 renewed interest in and funding for circumpolar research. One unique element of this International Polar Year was the focus on education and outreach initiatives. This study explores outreach stakeholders’ perspectives on conducting science outreach with northern Canadian schools. A total of sixty semi-structured interviews were conducted with northern researchers, residents and educators to determine culturally appropriate and pedagogically suitable methods for educational outreach initiatives in the Canadian north. I examined northern resident and educator experiences with integrating Indigenous and Western ways of knowing, identified factors supporting educational outreach initiatives, and provided recommendations on how to strengthen educational outreach partnerships. Results show that institutional barriers discourage researchers from participating in educational outreach. Northern residents and educators viewed integrative science as an effective method to engage students in Indigenous and Western science, and to encourage collaborative educational outreach partnerships amongst outreach stakeholders.

unique challenges for the governance of sport sponsorship. This evolution gives rise to possible conceptual linkage between sport sponsorship and corporate governance or none<br />
thereof. This study focuses on the ABSA-Premier Soccer League (PSL) sponsorship transaction as a case study to explore this linkage. The research is aimed at finding the nexus<br />
between sport sponsorship and corporate governance principles, namely accountability and transparency in the conclusion of this transaction.</p>

The research consists of four phases / literature review which provides a detailed analysis of all primary and secondary material available on this topic. The second phase is a qualitative<br />
case study research methodology which comprises of in-depth interviews with targeted stakeholders. The third part presents the research findings and discussion section, and lastly<br />

transactions in the company accounts as well as accountability. Academics have been exploring the notion of sports sponsorship and corporate governance with much of the<br />
debates grounded on understanding its commercial value.</p>

The Relationship Between Vagal Tone, A Marker of Parasympathetic Activity, and Pro-Social BehaviorGoodlin, Emily A 01 January 2015 (has links)
Vagal tone, a measure of parasympathetic activity via the vagus nerve, is known to be associated with positive emotion because it promotes social engagement and self-soothing behavior. Heart rate variability (HRV), especially high frequency oscillation, is a direct measure of vagal tone, and has been used in previous studies to test the correlation between vagal tone and positive emotion. This study aims to determine if the two major oscillations of heart rate variability, high frequency (HF-HRV) and low frequency (LF-HRV) can predict pro-social behavior, which is classified as giving donations to charities. Baseline LF- and HF-HRV levels were recorded, and compared to how much each participant donated after watching several donation appeals by charities. Results showed there was no significant difference in either LF- or HF-HRV levels between donors and non-donors. A negative correlation was found between both LF and HF-HRV levels and donation behavior, contradicting research that predicts a positive correlation between the two variables. There was no significant effect of gender on donation amount. This research gives insight in to how physiological changes can affect psychological processes, such as emotional expression.

Metal Oxide-Hierarchical Porous Silica Nanocomposites Prepared by Nanoemulsion Templating and Integrative SynthesisHessien, Manal 06 November 2014 (has links)
Nanoemulsions are templates that have the potential to fill the gap between micellar systems and latex particles in the preparation of porous materials. A nanoemulsion can also be used as a carrier for uploading the desired materials inside the pore formed after the removal of the template. In this research, oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions were prepared by means of a low-energy method based on a phase inversion composition (PIC) technique, using two nonionic surfactants (Tween 80 and Span 80), which can be mixed in order to adjust the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB). The influence of a number of parameters on the tunability and stability of such nanoemulsions was also studied. The effect of the simultaneous intercrossing of multifactors on droplet size was explored using a process- mixture design, and the size of the nanoemulsion oil droplets was measured by means of dynamic light scattering (DLS).
The nanoemulsions were combined with sol-gel method in order to prepare porous silica with a macroporosity in the 50 nm to 400 nm range. The results demonstrate that a precise synergy between the silica source and the nanoemulsions is essential for effective interactions and homogeneous structures. Depending on the nature of such interactions, a variety of materials were observed, from hollow particles to continuous gels. Changing the size of the oil droplet and the volume of the nanoemulsions produced silica with differing pore sizes and varying total pore volumes. The obtained hierarchical porous silica (HPS) were characterized using mercury porosimetry, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), nitrogen isotherms, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
The parallel use of the oil vesicles as containers for the further synthesis of metal oxide is a novel method of internally functionalizing the silica. When hydrophobic metal precursors are dissolved into the oil phase before the preparation of the nanoemulsion, they are confined within the globular cavities of the silica. The thermal treatment applied to the material to burn the organics then leads to the final formation of metal oxide nanoparticles, which are larger than the porosity of the silica matrix but entrapped within the large cavities, producing a "rattle-like" structure. This method was demonstrated through the synthesis of Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and Co3O4 nanoparticles, and the results showed that a rather large amount of metal oxide (up to a 60 wt.% of metal oxide in nanocomposites) be generated while still maintaining the nanometric size observed at lower concentrations. This method allows control of the type of metal oxide, the concentration of the metal oxide, and the pore size, which enables the creation of different types of nanocomposites. Metal oxide hierarchical porous silica (MHPS) nanocomposites were characterized based on nitrogen isotherms, TEM and SEM observations, FTIR analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Magnetic measurements were also taken.
This new method, using the new templating objects, is a perfect illustration of the concept of "integrative synthesis,??? whereby the combination of building units and reactional mechanisms leads to complex structures as a result of true synergy among the elements during the reaction. In this case, the size of the nanoemulsion and the total water volume both contribute to the generation of distinctive architectures. In addition, the reaction of the metal oxide precursors within the cavities limits the extension of the final crystal size, but the surrounding solid matrix plays a role as well by keeping the particles apart. The final factor is that the reactive materials cannot leak from the silica because of the rattle-like structure, but the reagents can reach those particles through the porosity of the silica framework.

Integrative and transformative learning practices: engaging the whole person in educating for sustainability.Todesco, Tara 18 December 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the tenets and approaches of integrative learning for sustainability, and critiques the adequacy and effectiveness of conventional, higher education practices in preparing students for what is an increasingly uncertain future. At the centre of this inquiry is the study of a fourth year, undergraduate field course from the School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria that took an integrative, whole-person approach to sustainability in light of integral systems theory. The course provided students with an experiential and integrative learning approach to the study of sustainability that sought to engage the multiple intelligences of students, issuing from their intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual dimensions. To support this process, the course aimed at meeting the needs associated with these facets through diverse learning experiences that included contemplative exercises, the development of a learning community, a critical examination of course readings and experience in service learning activities.
The evaluative research of the course’s impacts examined the learning experiences from the students’ perspective to identify which experiences and approaches were most meaningful. The enquiry also investigated which, if any, of these experiences led to enduring personal transformation and/or community action. The methodology undertaken involved a phenomenological examination of two small group interviews with six of the participating students, as well as an analysis of the six students’ written reflection assignments. The results of this research show the effectiveness and impact of some of the distinctive approaches of the course, namely the powerful effects of experiential learning, community based learning and the provision of time and space for personal and group reflection. These activities supported students in broadening and changing their view of themselves, their sense community, as well as provided opportunities for students to engage in sustainable practices. / Graduate

Excavating Lesbian Feminism from the Queer Public Body: The Indispensability of Women-identificationIsen, Jaclyn A. 10 July 2013 (has links)
Drawing on my own process of entry into local queer, lesbian and feminist public cultures, I argue that a powerful relationship between feminist and lesbian existence can be felt and that this sensibility bears influence on the way queer erotic and politicized identities emerge in relation to one another. These affective links remain frequently unacknowledged and/or are actively repudiated due to popular accounts of feminist genealogy whereby second wave lesbian-feminist positions are rendered fundamentally incompatible with contemporary queer/third wave feminist ones. I challenge this narrative by building on select early articulations of radical lesbian feminism to show that when affirmed consciously, the sense that lesbianism and feminism are interconnected constitutes a “woman-identified experience” and an opportunity to bear witness to the unrealized possibilities of second-wave radical feminism in the present. I conclude that politicized “lesbian” and/or “woman” identification remain indispensable strategic sites from which to observe and confront heteropatriarchy.

This research inquires into whether the motivation of students learning English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at the upper-intermediate level improves when thematic instruction is employed in the classroom.
This is the first time that a theme-based integrated skills approach was implemented at the Department of Basic English (DBE), METU at the intermediate and upper-intermediate levels. With the outcome of the needs analysis carried out by the administration, it was realized that students at the preparatory school needed to use integrated skills as reflected in &lsquo / real life&rsquo / . Moreover, thematic instruction was seen to be a requisite in the new curriculum since content is a key motivating principle. Hence, since one of the main concerns was the motivation of students attending courses at the preparatory school, there was a need to examine whether using this mode of instruction at the upper-intermediate level was able to ameliorate student motivation.
For this research, firstly a pilot study and then qualitative analysis using in-depth interviews developed on the basis of the pilot study was employed. Therefore, using a triangulation of different kinds of data on related questions, interviews were carried out with 14 students on three separate occasions at the end of each span from the upper-intermediate group, two administrators and six upper-intermediate instructors.
From the point of view of the students it appeared that generally content encouraged learning and improved English proficiency if the themes/topics were found to be of interest. However, the degree of impact of the themes and topics on student motivation largely depended on whether the student was intrinsically motivated or not. If the student was intrinsically motivated, content had a nominal affect on motivating them.
The study showed that if the themes are linear and have a parochial focus on topics, too much time is spent on a theme, a redundancy of lexical items are taught, unnecessary details are included, and difficult and academic language used, these led to student demotivation in respect of content. Thus, indicating a greater variety of content was needed.

<p>The present healthcare system in South Africa suffers from a number of serious deficiencies. Whilst orthodox bio-medicine is well established in most first world countries, its total introduction and implementation into all communities within South Africa faces many obstacles. The cost of diagnostic techniques, investigative procedures and pharmaceutical products, the availability of competent medical staff in the non-urban areas, and the lack of acceptance of the philosophy and practice of orthodox bio-medicine in rural regions are but some of the factors which conspire against the general application of this orthodox medical paradigm.<br />

Another problem confronting healthcare and medical practice in South Africa, particularly at this stage of our historical development, is the absolute focus on orthodox bio-medicine, often to the detriment of other medical paradigms that also have advantages to offer. Can the integration of another medical paradigm, such as Unani-Tibb, enhance the practice of orthodox bio-medicine in this country?<br />

The aim of the thesis was to investigate the possibility of integrating Unani-Tibb with orthodox biomedicine (also termed conventional, Western or allopathic medicine) and assess its potential for improving delivery of an effective, affordable and appropriate healthcare system in South Africa.<br />
<br />
The research questions which the thesis seeks to answer is whether this integration is possible and whether the delivery of healthcare to the South African population can be enhanced. Changes in the provision of medical education are necessary, and occupy a pivotal role in allowing for this integration. Unani-Tibb is a traditional medical system practiced extensively on the Indian sub-continent and in other parts of the world. At present, however, it is minimally practiced in South Africa. Its primary principle is the energetic promotion of health maintenance behaviour and the prevention of disease, through effective application of dietotherapy, pharmacotherapy and other interventions, as well as the empowerment of the patient towards adopting behavioural changes and lifestyle adaptations. One positive aspect of Unani-Tibb is that it has many features in common with both orthodox biomedicine and African Traditional medicine. These commonalities should allow for greater acceptance by orthodox healthcare professionals, as well as the general population. The first part of the study involved the research and conceptualisation required for the production of a series of customized training modules which introduced the theory and practice of Unani-Tibb. A twelve month part-time training programme based on these modules was subsequently conducted with a number of healthcare professionals presently in active practice and with a background of orthodox medical or nursing healthcare. This outcomes-based training programme included a number of specifically designed training activities, such as case studies, practical exercises and assignments. Appropriate evaluations and assessments were pursued in order to measure performance outcomes and attitudes. Questionnaires for assessing the motivation and satisfaction of the participants were also completed. The second part of the study was in the form of a pilot participant research project, in which the participants applied the information from the integrative programme to a number of chronically ill patients who had previously been treated with standard orthodox bio-medical procedures. The parameters derived for clinical efficacy, cost-benefit and improvement in Quality of Life from Unani-Tibb treatment were then compared to equivalent results obtained by orthodox bio-medicine. In all parameters inspected, the integrative training programme compared favourably to orthodox bio-medical practice. Not only was there an improved clinical efficacy, but the cost-benefit was shown to be superior in most indices measured. The Quality of Life comparison, which assessed the patient&rsquo / s total health status, subjective behaviour and attitude, generally favoured the integrative training programme. The thesis serves to suggest that the integration of Unani-Tibb into orthodox bio-medical training in South Africa is a distinct possibility, and could ultimately allow for treatment which is clinically acceptable, cost-effective and which provides an improved Quality of Life for the population as a whole. I suggest that this pilot study be repeated more extensively, thereby allowing for a more confident and objective assessment.</p>
