Perspectives of northern researchers, residents and educators on science education and outreach in Yukon, Canada

Ross, Frances K P 09 March 2012 (has links)
International Polar Year 2007-2008 renewed interest in and funding for circumpolar research. One unique element of this International Polar Year was the focus on education and outreach initiatives. This study explores outreach stakeholders’ perspectives on conducting science outreach with northern Canadian schools. A total of sixty semi-structured interviews were conducted with northern researchers, residents and educators to determine culturally appropriate and pedagogically suitable methods for educational outreach initiatives in the Canadian north. I examined northern resident and educator experiences with integrating Indigenous and Western ways of knowing, identified factors supporting educational outreach initiatives, and provided recommendations on how to strengthen educational outreach partnerships. Results show that institutional barriers discourage researchers from participating in educational outreach. Northern residents and educators viewed integrative science as an effective method to engage students in Indigenous and Western science, and to encourage collaborative educational outreach partnerships amongst outreach stakeholders.

Os diferentes veículos e abordagens (revista Pesquisa Fapesp, Agencia Fapesp, Portal, entre outros) têm se tornado referência na área e contribuído para a divulgação das pesquisas financiadas pela instituição na mídia em geral e para a formação de uma cultura científica / Abstract: Research institutions and funding agencies have been increasingly concerned about how important is the dissemination of Brazilian scientific production for the development of a scientific culture in the country. Education for journalists specialized in the coverage of Science, Technology and Innovation and the increasing professionalism of Communications Offices have been essential to the expansion and improvement of scientific dissemination in the media. This is the case of Fapesp (Fundação de Apoio à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo) Communications Office, established in 1995. Since its foundation, Fapesp Communications Office has been enhancing its activities and has become an example for other funding agencies in the country, guided by its experience. The main objective of this project is to examine the work done by Fapesp Communications Office which performance has helped consolidating the image of the referred agency. This research is a case study, which uses the techniques of content analysis, supported by literature, documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews. The research is qualitative, combined with the quantitative method to illustrate some information. The survey results indicate that the scientific outreach done by Fapesp is in continuous process of improvement and has been essential in the consolidation of the institutional image. The different vehicles and approaches (Pesquisa Fapesp magazine, news agency, sites, etc.) have become a reference in the area and contributed to the dissemination of the researches funded by the institution in the media, and to the formation of a scientific culture as well / Mestrado / Divulgação Científica e Cultural / Mestre em Divulgação Científica e Cultural

Upper echelon, cluster development and performance : A study of governance and shared value strategy in Swedish institutions of higher education / Upper echelon, klusterutveckling och prestation : En studie kring styrning och shared value-strategi i svenska universitet och högskolor

Urzander, Jakob, Larsson, Mårten January 2015 (has links)
Background: The "introduction of new public management" in institutions of higher education has brought a measurement-minded form of governance based on "doing more with less". At the same time, universities have increasingly become institutions where documentation proving the conformation to norms of society is more important than the actual outcomes of the organization. A more viable strategic mind set based on the core goals of higher education is therefore required in order to increase the congruence between stated goals and outcomes. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the demographics in boards and top management teams in higher education affect performance through the mediating role of cluster development. Method: This thesis has an abductive research approach as we emanate not only from previous theoretical discussions on public governance, upper echelon and cluster development, but also from a qualitative pilot study where we explore the cluster development concept in the university context. Our quantitative study is a cross-sectional study based on partly a survey sent to most directors and managers in higher education in Sweden, and partly independent data collection from financial reports and other sources. Results and conclusion: The results are based on a small sample with few observations which imply that we cannot draw strong conclusions based on our statistical findings. We can however discern different indications of relationships between certain demographic diversity factors in boards and top management teams and certain aspects of cluster development. There are however mixed indications regarding the relationship between cluster development and university performance.

Communicating science : developing an exhibit with scientists and educators

Lemagie, Emily 28 October 2011 (has links)
Outreach is a small, but significant component to modern research. Developing an exhibit for public display can be an effective way to communicate science to broad audiences, although it may be a less familiar method to scientists than writing papers or giving presentations. I outline the process of developing an interactive exhibit for outreach, and evaluate and discuss the effectiveness of a computer exhibit designed to communicate estuary currents and scientific modeling using Olympia Oyster restoration in the Yaquina Bay estuary as a theme. I summarize the results of this project in three primary recommendations: 1) exhibit developers should be deliberate in the decision to use a computer and only select this media if it is determined to be the best for communicating exhibit learning outcomes, 2) the design of visualizations to convey research results should be carefully modified from their scientific forms to best meet the exhibit learning outcomes and expectations of the exhibit audience, and 3) scientists should play an integral role in the development of scientific content-based exhibits, but their expertise, and the range of expertise from other members of the exhibit development team, should be strategically utilized. / Graduation date: 2012
