The thesis aims at bringing into light the horrible traumatic experience of Poverty under which the former Moçambican refugees living in the Bushbuckridge area near Hazyview live. Unlike other writers who define poverty as a mere “insufficiency of the material necessities of life” (Hammond 2003:61) and “the inability of individuals, households or entire community to command sufficient resources to satisfy a socially acceptable minimum standard of living” (Pieterse 2001:30). The author approaches poverty in a holistic and integrated way, taking into account the political, economic, social, and behavioural as well as the spiritual component. The historical background of the violent war in Moçambican is given to enable the reader to understand how the Moçambican people were traumatized by the brutal killings that forced them to flee for safety in neighbouring countries including South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi, etc. The author further aims at challenging the church, government, civil society and other concerned stakeholders to contribute meaningfully in working towards bringing positive change in the living conditions of these refugees. The combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches is used to collect data necessary for the education of stakeholders on the poverty situation of the refugees. Academic literature alone is seen not to be sufficient as it may hover above the experience of these refugees. Quantitative approach will therefore help to engage the refugees to tell stories from their perspectives. The use of a structured questionnaire form is therefore used to obtain the data needed to help the concerned stakeholders gain a truer perception of the situation. This engagement of stakeholders is aimed at providing the refugees with opportunities to increase their awareness, and to help in the development of their skills to help them live effectively and deal with their problems more competently and independently. competence encompassing knowledge, skills and attitudes. Of these, the knowledge and
skills gained in Anatomy play a fundamental role in contributing to the quality and
performance of the medical practitioner. The present study aimed to evaluate the role of the
teaching-learning Anatomy in the training of doctors at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in
Mozambique and therefore to contribute to the effectiveness of the medical curriculum to
ensure that it produces high quality medical professionals. The following questions were
addressed: i) Is the Anatomy course perceived by the students to be structured to address
their needs regarding medical practice? ii) Is there a relationship between performance in
Anatomy and other disciplines as recalled by the students? iii) Do medical students
demonstrate a satisfactory knowledge of Anatomy in dealing with patients in practice? The
study involved the medical students in the clinical cycle and the junior doctors employed at
the Central Hospital of Maputo City. Data obtained by means of questionnaires, examination
of clinical reports and interviews was analysed statistically by the SPSS programme. The
results showed that overall the students have a positive view of how well the Anatomy
course meets their clinical needs, and that there is a direct relationship between knowledge of
Anatomy and the ability to perform in the clinical setting. There is however a need to review
the current medical curriculum in order to achieve better integration between the courses and
cycles and particularly to improve the efficacy of the teaching-learning process by selecting
the content more appropriately and adjusting the assessment procedures. From this study
recommendations may be made to help improve the students’ application of anatomical
knowledge by increasing vertical and horizontal integration in the curriculum and
introducing earlier exposure to clinical problem solving. Further studies are needed to better
understand the impact of assessing the outcomes of the basic sciences such as Anatomy on
the educational process as well as on medical practice.

Resourcing the local church : attitudes among Mozambican evangelicals towards economic dependency and self-relianceReeve, Richard John January 2018 (has links)
Debates concerning how churches in the developing world are best resourced in terms of their funding base and the implications of this for other aspects of church life have been conducted for over 150 years. The solutions offered have ranged from the Three-Self theory, with its advocacy of local self-support, to wholesale financial support from abroad, and in between a combination of those methods in a variety of configurations. This thesis focuses on the recent experiences of evangelical Christians in a southern Mozambican context, paying particular attention to three case studies: the Igreja Evangelica Arca da Salvação; the Ministério Centro de Louvor; and the Igreja Reformada em Moçambique. It asks why so many churches in Mozambique are seemingly locked into a dynamic of economic dependency on donors from abroad, but also why it is that in that shared and impoverished national context some churches are attempting, with some success, to resource their own activities. Using accounts and reflections obtained first-hand from Mozambican Christians, the thesis suggests that, alongside important factors such as the historical circumstances surrounding the emergence of each church group or denomination, the vision and agency of leaders in each local congregation are also fundamental to the resourcefulness of the members and the developmental trajectory of the church. In the context of self-governance, the role of such leadership is highlighted as crucial to the emergence of both self-funding and self-propagation. As well as contributing to the debate concerning the resourcing of churches in the developing world, this thesis addresses social theory that is concerned with how and why individuals invest their available resources in the religious communities of which they are part. It also contributes to the study of independent churches in southern Africa, concerning their potency for independent economic development. Finally, this thesis argues that, for the purposes of avoiding the cultivation of unhealthy dependency in national churches, international mission societies and para-church organizations in developed nations would do well to analyse the dynamics of which they are part. Where partnerships consist largely of sponsorship, it is argued, the risk of ongoing unhealthy dependency is high.

A partir deste enfoque, este estudo proporcionará uma análise dos elementos estéticos e históricos concatenados à inaptidão de um mestiço numa sociedade preconceituosa cercada pelo domínio português durante a era colonial. Através de uma narrativa alegórica, em que nação e narração envolvem-se, Orlando Mendes constrói um romance que propicia uma leitura de Moçambique durante os anos de 1950. Assim, será possível observar a forte integração entre texto e contexto ao considerarem-se as seguintes investigações desenvolvidas nesta dissertação, tais como: a construção de um conjunto orgânico literário moçambicano, o colonialismo, a memória, a ancestralidade, a miscigenação, a configuração da língua portuguesa, a tradição literária e a grande jornada de um mulato clandestino como guia central de toda sua portagem. Through these topics, this study will show an analysis of its esthetics and historical elements connected with the destiny of a mulatto without a land, living in a place surrounded by a prejudiced society and the Portugal government during the colonial era. Through an allegoric narrative, in which nation and narration meet themselves, Orlando Mendes builds a novel that introduces a vision of Mozambique during the 1950's. Thus, it will be possible to observe the strong bond between the text and context when the following results developed in this paper are brought to the considerations, such as: the building of literary Mozambique set, the colonialism, the memory, the ancestry, the miscegenation, the configuration of the Portuguese language, the literary tradition and the big journey of a clandestine mulatto acting like the central guide of all its passage/portagem. Esta dissertação busca demonstrar a presença do fantástico e do maravilhoso na narrativa de Mia Couto.
Para tal, apresenta-se uma discussão teórica acerca desses dois géneros, retomando-se o que de mais importante se tem escrito sobre o assunto.
A seguir, procede-se à análise do fantástico e do maravilhoso na narrativa de Mia Couto, recorrendo a exemplos dos seus contos e romances. Esta análise inclui uma definição de cada um destes géneros, adequada à especificidade da obra do escritor; um estudo dos temas fantásticos e maravilhosos mais frequentes; e, por fim, uma caracterização dos discursos fantástico e maravilhoso.
SUMMARY
This dissertation aims to demonstrate the presence of the fantastic and the marvellous in Mia Couto's narrative.
In order to achieve these objectives, the first step is to contextualize these two genres, making a brief reflexion about the most important theories on this subject.
After this theoretical chapter, this thesis analyses the fantastic and the marvellous in Mia Couto's work by giving examples from his short stories and novels. This chapter also includes a definition of each genre, specifically adapted to the writer's narrative; a study of most frequent fantastic and marvellous themes;

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo a análise de poemas da escritora moçambicana Noémia de Sousa, reunidos na obra Sangue Negro (2016). A partir de discussões teóricas sobre o conceito de identidade, buscamos entender de que modo estas se constroem no discurso estético da autora e quais percursos identitários podem ser vislumbrados em sua poética por meio de uma crítica analítica e interpretativa. Buscamos observar como a experiência pessoal de mulher e mestiça dentro de uma sociedade colonial, foi determinante na gênese da poesia engajada da escritora. Para tanto, traçamos um breve panorama histórico sobre as singularidades do colonialismo português no território de Moçambique. / This dissertation aims to analyze the poems of the Mozambican writer Noémia de Sousa, gathered in the work Black Blood (2016). From theoretical discussions about the concept of identity, we seek to understand how those are constructed in the author\'s aesthetic discourse and which identity paths can be glimpsed in her poetics through an analytical and interpretative critique. We sought to observe how the personal experience of woman and mestiza within a colonial society was decisive in the genesis of the writer\'s engaged poetry. To do so, we draw a brief historical overview on the singularities of Portuguese colonialism in the territory of Mozambique.
