The Miqat of al-Juhfa: a historical and archaeological study

Alsubaie, Mohammad 15 August 2018 (has links)
The Mīqāt of al-Juhfa is located in the west of Saudi Arabia about 187 km northwest of the Holy City of Mecca. Al-Juhfa is one of the five fixed places called Mawāqīt, or entry stations to the pilgrimage (Hajj). These Mawāqīt were designated during the early Islamic period for any pilgrim comes through them with the intention of Hajj. During the early Abbasid period, al-Juhfa was the largest occupied Mīqāt in the Islamic world. This study focuses primarily on historical and archaeological aspects of the Mīqāt of al-Juhfa during the early Islamic period. To illustrate these aspects, the study analyzed many primary sources that mention al-Juhfa in order to reconstruct the historical and cultural development of the site and to establish the extent to which it functions as an urban center. The study benefited from important information provided by these sources in this respect, such as the chronology of the site, its strategic location, topographical features, the nature of the landscape at different times, the function of specific objects, human activities that took place at the site, and factors that led to its prosperity and decline. The study also undertook a fieldwork at al-Juhfa site—primarily archaeological survey and excavation. This fieldwork enabled us to test the results of the textual analysis and to reveal other characteristics of the site (such as its cultural role, urban elements, planning and defences, architectural functions, building technique, building material, and other features). Moreover, the study analyzed both the formal and technical qualities of all archaeological discoveries on the site, comparing them with their analogues at other early Islamic sites in the Middle East. The study derived many results that clearly indicate the great importance of al-Juhfa as an urban center characterized by several urban functions during the early Abbasid period in the late of 8th century until its importance began to decline gradually between the second half of 11th century and the first half of 12th century. This chronology is supported by both written sources and the archaeological evidence. Several architectural elements and a collection of archaeological finds of different pieces of pottery, ceramic, glass, worked stone, and metal were discovered at al-Juhfa. These discoveries provide us with more information about the extent of mutual influence and active interaction between various cultures during pre-Islamic period as well as the high cultural and commercial level achieved by al-Juhfa and the relationship it had with other Islamic sites in the Middle East. / Graduate / 2019-06-26

Estudo do comportamento geomecânico de rochas efusivas da formação serra geral e sua aplicação na modelagem numérica de túneis / The geomechanical behaviour of efusive rocks from Serra Geral Formation and its application to tunnel numerical analisys

Silveira, Felipe Gobbi January 2011 (has links)
In the present society the underground occupation has become increasingly relevant. In Southern Brazil it is possible to observe the use of underground excavation applied to tunneling for hydro electric power plants, as carried out in the Serra Geral Formation (FSG) effusive rocks. Some of these tunnels showed high stresses in the rock mass, which resulted in time and money wasted as it was not expected in the project development and also because there was not a suitable solution found when empirical correlations were applied. Considering these difficulties during the project development, this thesis studies the FSG effusive rocks behavior and the utilization of tunnel data for numerical simulations. About 650m of tunnel excavation has been monitored at the UHE Castro Alves. Geology data, instrumentation results and rock samples have been obtained. To determine the shear stress versus strain behavior, laboratory tests were carried out. The correlation between some parameters was obtained and test parameters of the intact rock were extrapolated to the rock mass. A SIG platform has been used with the field data and the geomechanical parameters; it appears to be a useful tool with great potential for this kind of work. Since the geomechanical parameters have been determined, a FEM 3D analysis was carried out; field displacements back-analysis from the 3D analysis made possible the estimation of a K0 value approximately equal to 1,3. Parametrical analyses were also carried out to study the relevance of considering the correct rock strata and the effects of high horizontal stresses on the numerical simulation results, which showed the need for this kind of analysis in tunnels excavated under these conditions.

Análise numérica tridimensional de túneis considerando não linearidade do suporte de concreto projetado reforçado com aço / Three-dimensional numerical analysis of tunnels considering nonlinear properties of steel reinforced shotcrete support

Fernando Galvanin Jamal 27 September 2013 (has links)
Research and projects involving the intricate interaction between rock mass and tunnel support structures constantly evolve. The adoption of sophisticated numerical models allied to the development of computers with an increasing processing capacity allows mechanical representations of complex processes. For geotechnical analysis, considerations on rock mass strength, deformability and hydraulic conductivity are found in computational codes with representations close to those found in vanguard experimental research of this subject. However, these same codes often attribute simplistic representations to reinforced concrete behavior, frequently based on elasticity theory. Economic and uncertainty implications in safety evaluation result from this sort of representation. This research aims to contribute to analysis of interaction between rock mass and support of an underground excavation. Thus, numerical simulations were elaborated considering established techniques of mechanical evaluation of excavations, allied to a reinforced concrete representation taking into account the prominent effect of cracking. Focused on the concrete behavior, there were developed numerical simulations of distinct reinforced concrete structures selected in literature and that rely on fair instrumentation and adequate mechanical characterization of the involved materials. The results indicate the possibility of concomitant evaluation of the rock mass complex character and the reinforced concrete. This fact contributes to safety evaluation of an underground excavation with potential repercussions on project cost.

The retaining structures, usually of wood, steel or concrete, can be constituted by sheet pile wall, piles with lagging, ¿in cast¿ pile walls and diaphragm walls among others and need to be designed, so that they reach the requirements about functionality, execution, safety and economy an appropriate way. It is possible divide the design methods in three great groups. The Empirical Methods that has been based on results of experimental measures, the Semi-Empirical Methods that admit as loading a diagram of earth pressures for both sides of the wall, in each excavation phase, presupposing the displacements and considering the struts and anchorage as fixed supports and, finally, the Analytical Methods that take into account the characteristics of strength and stiffness of the structure and soil and they make possible the evolutionary calculation of internal efforts (strut forces, bending moments and shear forces) as well as the displacements, so the previous phases are taken indeed into account in the calculations of the following phases. Initially a wide bibliographical revision on the methods of calculation of retaining structures is presented. After that, this work adopts as focus the Winkler¿s Model, through One-Dimensional Analytical Method that bases the development of the CEDEVE program (Evolutionary Calculation of Displacements and Efforts in Braced Trenches). This program assimilates the wall as a beam of unitary width, being the soil modeled as springs with linear perfectly elastic-plastic behavior including histeresis. Struts and anchorages, of elastic behavior, with or without initials forces, can be introduced in the structure. The actions on the structure occur by the soil pressures, water pressures and eventually overloads in the soil surface. The calculations are performed in agreement with the excavation phases, leaving the actions (soil pressures) and springs corresponding to the dug soil as well as introducing the struts/anchorages, so that the efforts and displacements happened in the previous phases are properly considered in the calculations of the following phases. The process of cover the trench with earth, when it exists, is also considered. A important differential of the CEDEVE program regarding other similar ones is the possibility of the inclusion of the temperature effects in the calculations of the displacements and efforts, and such thermal effects can be considered on the struts, what promotes the tendency of its stretch, that being impeded partially, generates consequent compression and also in the own retaining wall through gradients that induce bending and, therefore, also influencing on the loads on the struts system. A practical and numerical study is done with the intention of validate and verify the CEDEVE program, firstly testing their results with the program SAP 2000 and, after that, comparing the results generated with several other available programs (SPW2003, DEEP and ESTWIN). The effect of the temperature on the struts, calculated by CEDEVE, is compared with some results of available instrumentations in the consulted bibliography. Besides this, a comparative study with some Empirical and Semi-Empirical Methods was done. In general, it is possible to conclude that the Winkler¿s Model used in the modeling of the problem generates satisfactory results and its relationship cost benefit is quite attractive in the analysis of retaining structures / Doutorado / Estruturas / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

The Geotechnical Engineering is considered an essential tool, in great workmanships (hydroelectric power plants, subways, tunnels, etc.) supplying technical support for design and construction. In this context, the underground excavations in rock have increased too much. This work presents a study of the behavior of the closer of an underground excavation in rock, where it was considered as case study, Simplício hydroelectric power plant, located in the Paranaíba do Sul river, in frontiers of the States of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. By means of laboratory tests with samples of intact rock and survey mapping of discontinuities, was characterizes the rock mass. Establishing the principal geomechanic parameters and estimating the in-situ stress state of the rock mass, then was chose the geomechanical model and made a numerical simulation of the excavation process tunnel help downstream of tunnel 3. For the tunnel study was conducted a numerical axial analysis symmetry of the relaxation of the excavated mass on the distance from the face of excavation, to determine the moment of installation and simulate a support of the tunnel closer. For the carried out simulation, the rock mass behaved only in the elastic range, finding closer the results of the simulation, the results on the field by monitoring the tunnel. It was observed that for the degree of alteration of the studied mass, the rupture could occur for the rock as well for the discontinuities, depending on the wedges formed for the discontinuities families and the support type applied in the rock mass / Atualmente, a crescente demanda por grandes obras no Brasil, tem se tornado um gargalo para o desenvolvimento.

Review of waste management in the UK construction industry

Adjei, Solomon D. January 2016 (has links)
The construction industry is considered the world over as a major contributor to the high rates of waste generation in developed countries. The negative influence of waste generation on the environment, natural resources, and the profitability of firms puts increasing pressure on the industry to reduce the waste it generates. The pressures to reduce waste are heightened by current trends demanding sustainable management of waste for the purposes of economic, social, and environmental gains. Literature on factors influencing waste management (WM) suggests government legislation is the most critical success factor for ensuring waste is sustainably managed. A review of the literature however indicated that researches holistically investigating the practices of construction firms and the extent to which these practices meet the intended outcomes of government legislation on waste are not present. Thus this research was undertaken to holistically investigate WM practices in the UK construction industry, to identify best practices and the extent to which they meet the intended outcomes of government WM legislation ad policy. The study adopted a multiple case study design to examine WM approaches, strategies and practices at both the corporate and project level within construction companies. Four construction companies who had won awards for their sustainability and environmental performance were purposefully selected to investigate best practice WM. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, passive observations, and documentary analysis. Analysis of the data revealed that the drivers for WM in the construction industry are: economic considerations; company sustainability agenda; company image; client requirements; environmental concerns; government legislation; moral and social demands; industrial benchmarking; environmental concerns; and the requirements of standards. Regarding the influence of legislation, the results revealed that government legislation plays a secondary role in influencing WM as clients are interested in using only compliant firms. Best practices targeting design to reduce waste through standardisation and prefabrication; on-site segregation through multi-skip provision; supply take back schemes; intensified site education; and the use of incentives were identified to lead to improved WM. The results also indicated that company sustainability agenda is the most influential driver for achieving sustainable construction, demolition and excavation (CD&E) WM. The findings highlighted the importance of having a clear vision and structure for WM at the corporate level alongside strategies to be implemented on projects to ensure sustainable WM is achieved. To help construction firms in achieving sustainable WM, which is the ultimate goal of government legislation, a best practice framework has been developed based on the findings from the study and evaluated using semi-structured interviews with selected target participants. The framework presents a coherent and systematic approach for achieving sustainable WM in construction companies by providing a roadmap for instituting measures at both corporate and project levels, taking into account factors that are likely to promote or inhibit the achievement of sustainable WM.

Aksoum (Ethiopia) : an inquiry into the state of documentation and preservation of the archaeological and heritage sites and monuments / Aksoum (Éthiopie) : enquête documentaire et de préservation des sites et monuments archéologiques et patrimoniaux

Woldeyohannes, Hiluf Berhe 07 December 2015 (has links)
Aksum is the capital of ancient Aksumite Kingdom and one of the most important archaeological site in Ethiopia. It has been registered on World Heritage List in 1980. Its archaeological and cultural heritage continues to be a victim of urbanization, development, erosion and deposition. Despite increased awareness and issues within the field of archaeology, the destruction of archaeological and cultural heritage sites of Aksum has been staggering. Although considered as an outstanding universal heritage site, very little focused cultural heritage management has been undertaken in Aksum. All archaeological excavations conducted thus far in Aksum focused on unearthing elite tombs and palaces. Both acts of destruction are relevant to current research on the cultural heritage management aspect in Aksum in general. This research provides an analysis of the destruction of the archaeological and heritage sites and monuments in Aksum based on ancient documents, archaeological excavations and field observation. It examines the extent the sites have been excavated, documented and preserved. Three sites have been selected for case study for the present research. The research revealed that the archaeological and heritage sites in Aksum have been deeply affected by urbanization in general. Evidently, the absence of integrated development planning by the municipality, lack of professionals in the field of archaeology and lack of public education have contributed significantly to the loss of the archaeological record. This thesis attempts to evaluate the current state of documentation and preservation of the cultural heritage resource in Aksum.

The project is centered around the cutter wheel in the mechanical rock excavator Mobile Miner 40V.  This cutter wheel is equipped with cutter discs that grind rock into debris as the wheel rotates and thrusts forward. The internal system consisting of a bearing constellation and the components in its vicinity has experienced a certain degree of wear in the form of scuffing and this was detected on the surfaces of some of the components in the system. The reasons for this occurrence are unknown and per the request of the thesis provider, this was to be determined. The thesis provider also requested a new Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model of the system along with feasible load cases that can be applied to said model. The project was deemed extensive and was therefore decided to be conducted by two students. This thesis covers the determination of the load cases as well as the optimization of the current design of the system inside the cutter wheel. During the pre-study, relevant background data was obtained for the cutter wheel and the internal system. Methods and models considered to potentially be useful were also gathered. The system in question was divided into two separate models; one consisted of a tribo-system with two components in sliding contact and the other consisted of the bearing constellation along with the outer-most section of the cutter wheel. The purpose of the first model was to use it to determine the contact pressure between the tribo-surfaces and by doing so, be able to determine the expected lubrication regime for the oil in the tribo-system. A material selection process was also conducted on the tribo-surface that had experienced the most severe surface damage. Additionally, minor reconstructions were made with the purpose of optimizing the system. The purpose of the second model was to apply the calculated load cases to the cutter disc attachments located on the outer-most section of the cutter wheel and then determine the contact pressures that develop on the bearing roller elements. The results of the thesis work consist of five potential material options, two reconstructions and 60 different load cases for the FEA model. With the load cases, the largest contact pressures on the bearing roller elements was determined. In addition, the cause of the severe surface damage that had occurred in the system is believed to have been identified. Further work on the project work is believed to be required. Future work of interest are determining load cases that incorporate multiple cutter discs simultaneously in contact with the rock, reconstruction solutions for the oil inlet and outlet pipes, a more thorough materials selection process and a criterion for the expected lubrication regime in the tribo-system based on tests performed with materials that are more identical to the ones in this project.
