Peter Schat's Tone Clock: The Steering Function and Pitch-Class Set Transformation in Genen

Fernandez Ibarz, Erik January 2015 (has links)
Dutch composer Peter Schat’s (1935-2003) pursuit of a compositional system that could generate and preserve intervallic relationships, while allowing the composer as much flexibility as possible to manipulate musical material, led him to develop the tone-clock system. Fundamentally comprised of the twelve possible trichords, the tone clock permits each to generate a complete twelve-tone series through the “steering” principle, a concept traced to Boulez’s technique of pitch-class set multiplication. This study serves as an overview of Schat’s tone-clock system and focuses primarily on the effects of the steering function in “Genen” (2000). Furthermore, I expand on the tone-clock system by combining transformational theory with Julian Hook’s uniform triadic transformations and my proposed STEER and STEERS functions, which express the procedures of the steering principle as a mathematical formula. Using a series of transformational networks, I illustrate the unifying effect steering has on different structural levels in “Genen,” a post-tonal composition.

Managing a real-time massively-parallel neural architecture

Patterson, James Cameron January 2012 (has links)
A human brain has billions of processing elements operating simultaneously; the only practical way to model this computationally is with a massively-parallel computer. A computer on such a significant scale requires hundreds of thousands of interconnected processing elements, a complex environment which requires many levels of monitoring, management and control. Management begins from the moment power is applied and continues whilst the application software loads, executes, and the results are downloaded. This is the story of the research and development of a framework of scalable management tools that support SpiNNaker, a novel computing architecture designed to model spiking neural networks of biologically-significant sizes. This management framework provides solutions from the most fundamental set of power-on self-tests, through to complex, real-time monitoring of the health of the hardware and the software during simulation. The framework devised uses standard tools where appropriate, covering hardware up / down events and capacity information, through to bespoke software developed to provide real-time insight to neural network software operation across multiple levels of abstraction. With this layered management approach, users (or automated agents) have access to results dynamically and are able to make informed decisions on required actions in real-time.

helvis III - Desenvolvimento e caracterização da plataforma robótica / helvis III - Development and characterization of a robotic plataform

Andres Eduardo Baquero Velasquez 24 February 2015 (has links)
The main objective of this work is the development and characterization of a robotic vehicle ℏelvis III in order to use it in the development of researches focused on the fields of mobile robotics control and navigation. Initially the propulsion system was characterized in order to determine the real velocity of vehicle in real conditions (four different kinds of grounds were used). In addition to this, the steering system was also characterized by applying the well-known bicycle kinematic model. During these experimental tests we could find the relation between the position of the servo-motor and the value of steering angle of the bicycle model. The real values of CEP (Circular Error Probability) and SEP (Spherical Error Probability) errors of the vehicle embedded GPS (Global Positioning System) were determined based on two experiments: the first one was carried out in São Carlos – SP (Brazil) and the second one in Villavicencio – Meta (Colombia). During the GPS experiments we could also characterize the vehicle embedded IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). Then we could observe and measure the effect of solar light on the LIDAR sensor (Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging) performance. Finally, the forward vehicle dynamics is described, with the determination of the center of mass of the vehicle and the observation of the normal forces behavior in the vehicle wheels when it is stopped or moved on an inclined floor.

Skanser, Cecilia, Rabia, Adla January 2020 (has links)
The Swedish public employment service is under an extensive process of digitalization as well as a big organizational change called ”förnyelseresan”, which purpose is to modernize the authority. Previous research has found different factors affecting the implementation process and also illustrates the special features of public administration employees.  The main theory of this study is based upon implementation steering and three employee characteristics, which a Swedish professor of political science, Lennart Lundquist, highlights: understand, will and can. They are said to determine whether or not the implementation will lead to desired outcome. The purpose of this study is to reach an understanding of how the employees at the Swedish public employment service experience the implementation process regarding the ongoing organizational change, and how these changes are handled, with a main focus on digitalization. Qualitative interviews with the employees have been constructed in order to reach an understanding of their experiences. The study shows extensive problems with technology and many of the employees also experience a great lack of resources, such as time and staff. But still their motivation seems to be high and they seem to have a positive attitude regarding changes in general. The received information from management has been clear and sufficient but the confidence towards management, and perceived understanding from them, varies greatly. The study also shows that the employees seem to have their clients best interests in mind.  The conclusion is that the employees understand and are willing to implement the changes but that they not quite can, due to technical problems and lack of resources.
