Fiber Birefringence Modeling for Polarization Mode Dispersion

Huang, Weihong January 2007 (has links)
This thesis concerns polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in optical fiber communications. Specifically, we study fiber birefringence, PMD stochastic properties, PMD mitigation and the interaction of fiber birefringence and fiber nonlinearity. Fiber birefringence is the physical origin of polarization mode dispersion. Current models of birefringence in optical fibers assume that the birefringence vector varies randomly either in orientation with a fixed magnitude or simultaneously in both magnitude and direction. These models are applicable only to certain birefringence profiles. For a broader range of birefringence profiles, we propose and investigate four general models in which the stochastically varying amplitude is restricted to a limited range. In addition, mathematical algorithms are introduced for the numerical implementation of these models. To investigate polarization mode dispersion, we first apply these models to single mode fibers. In particular, two existing models and our four more general models are employed for the evolution of optical fiber birefringence with longitudinal distance to analyze, both theoretically and numerically, the behavior of the polarization mode dispersion. We find that while the probability distribution function of the differential group delay (DGD) varies along the fiber length as in existing models, the dependence of the mean DGD on fiber length differs noticeably from earlier predictions. Fiber spinning reduces polarization mode dispersion effects in optical fibers. Since relatively few studies have been performed of the dependence of the reduction factor on the strength of random background birefringence fluctuations, we here apply a general birefringence model to sinusoidal spun fibers. We find that while, as expected, the phase matching condition is not affected by random perturbations, the degree of PMD reduction as well as the probability distribution function of the DGD are both influenced by the random components of the birefringence. Together with other researchers, I have also examined a series of experimentally realizable procedures to compensate for PMD in optical fiber systems. This work demonstrates that a symmetric ordering of compensator elements combined with Taylor and Chebyshev approximations to the transfer matrix for the light polarization in optical fibers can significantly widen the compensation bandwidth. In the last part of the thesis, we applied the Manakov-PMD equation and a general model of fiber birefringence to investigate pulse distortion induced by the interaction of fiber birefringence and fiber nonlinearity. We find that the effect of nonlinearity on the pulse distortion differs markedly with the birefringence profile.

First on-sky closed loop measurement and correction of atmospheric dispersion

Pathak, Prashant, Guyon, Olivier, Jovanovic, Nemanja, Lozi, Julien, Martinache, F., Minowa, Y., Kudo, T., Takami, H., Hayano, Y., Narita, N. 27 July 2016 (has links)
In the field of exoplanetary sciences, high contrast imaging is crucial for the direct detection of, and answering questions about habitability of exoplanets. For the direct imaging of habitable exoplanets, it is important to employ low inner working angle (IWA) coronagraphs, which can image exoplanets close to the PSF. To achieve the full performance of such coronagraphs, it is crucial to correct for atmospheric dispersion to the highest degree, as any leakage will limit the contrast. To achieve the highest contrast with the state-of-the-art coronagraphs in the SCExAO instrument, the spread in the point-spread function due to residual atmospheric dispersion should not be more than 1 mas in the science band. In a traditional approach, atmospheric dispersion is compensated by an atmospheric dispersion compensator (ADC), which is simply based on model which only takes into account the elevation of telescope and hence results in imperfect correction of dispersion. In this paper we present the first on-sky closed-loop measurement and correction of residual atmospheric dispersion. Exploiting the elongated nature of chromatic speckles, we can precisely measure the presence of atmospheric dispersion and by driving the ADC, we can do real-time correction. With the above approach, in broadband operation (y-H band) we achieved a residual of 4.2 mas from an initial 18.8 mas and as low as 1.4 mas in H-band only after correction, which is close to our science requirement. This work will be valuable in the field of high contrast imaging of habitable exoplanets in the era of the ELTs.

Sur la conception d'une cellule de suivi des performances d'éco-efficacité énergétique des machines électriques tournantes à courants alternatifs / Conception of a cell to monitor the eco-efficiency of AC electrical rotating machines

Zidat, Farid 09 January 2012 (has links)
The energetic performance increase of industrial processes using AC electrical rotating machines is nowadays of great concern. The developments presented in this thesis are situated in this context and are about the design of an energy monitoring tool (cell). The main scientific barrier to lift is the estimation of the electromagnetic torque of AC machines without dismounting their terminal box or measuring their shaft speed. Non invasive methods have been developed; they are based on the measurement of the phase current and/or the external flux in the immediate vicinity of the machine. Analyses of the external flux distribution around the external housing were made : the magnetic flux is attenuated and phase shifted because of the eddy current effect. Then, the analysis has made it possible to distinguish the contribution of the wires placed in the slots from the effect of the end-windings in the external flux emission. The work explains how to determine an image of the external flux, as well as the way to measure it. That leads to the definition of protocols for determining the electromagnetic torque, which, for some of them use current measurements or its estimation from the external flux. The proposed methods have been applied to induction machines with rated powers between 3 to 200 kW. The cell structure is described, in particular the wireless transmission of the measured information. The autonomy of the cell is a factor taken into account troughout the study, leading to the development of little-intensive computing algorithms. It is also shown that the external flux can be used as an additional energy source.

Cateau, Eugénie 01 April 2016 (has links) (PDF)

Very singular solutions of odd-order PDEs, with linear and nonlinear dispersion

Fernandes, Ray Stephen January 2008 (has links)
Asymptotic properties of solutions of the linear dispersion equation ut = uxxx in R × R+, and its (2k + 1)th-order generalisations are studied. General Hermitian spectral theory and asymptotic behaviour of its kernel, for the rescaled operator B = D3 + 1 3 yDy + 1 3 I, is developed, where a complete set of bi-orthonormal pair of eigenfunctions, {ψβ}, {ψ∗β }, are found. The results apply to the construction of VSS (very singular solutions) of the semilinear equation with absorption ut = uxxx − |u|p−1u in R × R+, where p > 1, which serves as a basic model for various applications, including the classic KdV area. Finally, the nonlinear dispersion equations such as ut = (|u|nu)xxx in R × R+, and ut = (|u|nu)xxx − |u|p−1u in R × R+, where n > 0, are studied and their “nonlinear eigenfunctions” are constructed. The basic tools include numerical methods and “homotopy-deformation” approaches, where the limits n → 0 and n → +∞ turn out to be fruitful. Local existence and uniqueness is proved and some bounds on the highly oscillatory tail are found. These odd-order models were not treated in existing mathematical literature, from the proposed point of view.

Evaluation of the Classical Reaction Engineering models in terms of mass transport and reaction rate distribution for low tube-to-particle diameter ratio beds.

Allain, Florent 27 April 2011 (has links)
Packed bed reactors are widely used in the chemicals industry and have been studied carefully in the last century. Several reaction engineering models have been developed in order to predict the behavior of such reactors under specified conditions, in order to assist in the sizing during an industrial process conception. These reactors can be categorized using different parameters, and the bed-to- particle diameter ratio - N - is one of them. It has been shown that this parameter influences greatly the transfer phenomena that occur in the bed, and that for ratios under 10, particular attention is needed when considering the wall effects. An impor- tant point that has to be evaluated is the accuracy of the actual chemical reaction engineering models when simulating such beds as it is valid to question the hypoth- esis of a pseudo-continuum model when considering a low bed-to-particle diameter ratio bed. Through high precision Computational Fluid Dynamics calculations, several beds of particles are modeled and studied in term of mass dispersion and reaction rate distribution. Two reaction engineering models - a simple pseudo-continuum model with effectiveness factor, and a model we refer to as "Single pellet" model - and several correlations regarding Peclet numbers are then evaluated under the same conditions in order to determine their accuracy and reliability for that particular kind of bed. Two beds of N = 5.96 and N = 7.99 are studied for dispersion phenomena, and the bed of N = 5.96 is studied for reaction rate distribution. It is shown that the pseudo- continuum model of dispersion stands valid for the higher N, but that none of the correlations we used were able to correctly predict the behavior of the N = 5.96 bed at any of the Reynolds number we considered, only giving close behaviors. We were confronted with some difficulties regarding the reaction simulation under Fluent, but some comparisons were successfully made regarding species and reaction rate distribution in the bed.

Desenvolvimento e caracterização de micropartículas lipídicas sólidas carregadas com hidrolisado proteico obtidas por spray chilling / Production and characterization of solid lipid microcapsules loaded with protein hydrolysate obtained by spray chilling

Oliveira, Mariana Salvim de 17 July 2014 (has links)
Protein hydrolysates possess therapeutic properties and absorption easier than to proteins; however its application in food is limited due to its bitter taste, hygroscopic and reactivity. Encapsulation byspray chilling could be an alternative to minimize these limitations. This method consists in the atomization of a mixture formed by the dispersion or emulsion of the active material with the molten carrier, into an environment with temperature below the melting point of the carrier, under these conditions it solidifies to form spherical microparticles. The aim of this work was to develop microparticles loaded with hydrolyzed soy protein using the method of spray chilling and vegetable fat (PF 51°C) as carrier. Tests were conducted to obtain microparticles evaluating the feed by emulsion and dispersion and different formulations by varying the proportions active materials:carrier (1:5 and 1:10), homogenization speed by Ultra-Turrax (6000 and 8000 rpm) and temperature (60, 70 and 80°C ), totaling eighteen treatments. The mixtures were subjected to rheological analysis for determination of viscosity and after being atomized at spray chiller obtained microparticles were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, particle size distribution and mean diameter measured using a laser light diffraction instrument and morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal microscopy. Solid lipid microparticles obtained were spherical and agglomerated the average size between 53.06 ± 2.17 µm and 68.03 ± 14.07 µm, there was no significant difference between formulations. Particles obtained by atomization of emulsion had presence of pores, but exhibited a higher loading capacity of the hydrolyzed, about 96%, while that obtained by dispersion had 54%. Changes during the preparation of the emulsion no provided changes at morphology and particle size of the microparticles, despite having influence on the rheological properties of the system. The analysis of X-ray diffraction showed that the microparticles after 90 days of storage had β polymorphic form. The infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that there was no interaction between the ingredients regardless of the mode of preparation of the microparticles. These results demonstrate that the technique spray chilling is efficient in microencapsulation of soy protein hydrolyzate, allowing future use in foods.
