Six years as a sub-examiner of both literature and written work made me aware of a personal dissatisfaction with the system of examining. This research examines in detail the use of the contextual question in examining Shakespeare's plays. The main concern has been to try to deduce what constitutes a good set of contextual questions. This area appears to have attracted little detailed research. However, there is much general writing on the teaching of literature. There is no major conclusion in the dissertation but rather a series of conclusions related to the concept of the contextual question. These are summarised towards the end of chapter three. Some general recommendations appear at the end of chapter three as a sub-heading. The findings of this investigation indicate a need for further research into the system of examining literature in the Cape. It is hoped that teachers and examiners reading this dissertation will be able to use the findings to provide a possible framework for the setting of sound contextual questions

This thesis is focused on scenographical treatment and conception of Shakespeare's play Titus Andronicus. Beside the historical and theoretical outline of the time of the play's creation, the thesis analyzes selected Czech and foreign productions of this play, with regard to its conceptional and graphic aspect. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on a complex analysis of the scenographic concept itself, and the graphic procedure as well. Thesis also marginally examines the central characters and the treatment of costumes.
The goal of this thesis is to approximate the graphic treatment of a specific play and to describe processes of searching for own and personal graphic procedure used. This thesis is not only a historical analysis; it is also a subjective view of the issue given, that is supposed to approximate the specific scenographic adaptation of the play to the reader.

Previous issue date: 2016-04-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Qualquer leitor que se proponha analisar os textos do mais famoso dramaturgo inglês, certamente notará que William Shakespeare foi grande observador da história. É curioso perceber que sua obra ultrapassou séculos, e mantém-se fielmente ovacionada na contemporaneidade. Visto a notória universalidade de seus trabalhos, revisitados em diversos gêneros e áreas das artes, e ricos ainda de possibilidades de interpretação, podemos notar sua intertextualidade ao longo dos anos perpetuando-se em significativa ampliação da arte do Bardo Inglês. Neste sentido, este estudo propõe uma análise comparativa, levantando pressupostos à luz da introdução dos estudos comparados da “intertextualidade” de Julia Kristeva (1974) e das Teorias da Adaptação de Linda Hutcheon (2011) sobre a tragédia lírica mais adaptada dos últimos tempos: Romeu e Julieta, e sua releitura pelas lentes do diretor italiano Franco Zeffirelli, de 1968, relacionando as teorias do cinema de Robert Stam (2003).A proposta deste trabalho é, portanto, relacionar as produções pontuando o olhar interrompido na obra renascentista e a sua retomada através dos recursos midiáticos modernos. / Any reader, who intends to analyze the productions of the most famous British play writer in the world, will certainly notice that William Shakespeare was a big history’s observer. It’s curious to perceive that his work go forward the centuries, and keep faithfully acclaimed nowadays. It’s remarkable the universality of his works, revisited sort and areas of the arts, still rich in interpretation possibilities, we can see the intertextuality along the years, profusely growing the art of the English Bard. In this sense, this study intend to make a comparative analyze, considering the introduction of the comparative studies of intertextuality from Julia Kristeva (1974) and the Adaptation Theories from Linda Hutcheon (2011) about the lyric – tragedymore adapted from the last times: Romeo and Juliet, and the rereading through the Italian director Zeffirelli’s lenses, in 1968, making a relation in the Cinema Theories from Robert Stam (2003). The purpose of this research is, therefore, to relate the productions, emphasizing the Interrupted View in the Renaissance work and its recapture by the media resources.

A presente pesquisa explora uma adaptação amadora em contexto escolar de Romeu e Julieta para as redes sociais desenvolvida em comunidades em risco na cidade de Bagé, Rio Grande do Sul, na região de fronteira entre Brasil e Uruguai. O objeto de estudo é a adaptação multiplataforma Romeus & Julietas, uma reinterpretação da história dos jovens amantes em ambiente digital. Cada ato da peça é mostrado ou contado em uma plataforma diferente (através de textos, imagens e sons) e o leitor navega a adaptação preenchendo lacunas e reconhecendo as referências aos personagens arquetípicos e, assim, tecendo a história. A hipótese dessa pesquisa é que a adaptação pode ser uma ferramenta para aproximar a obra de Shakespeare do público e que as mídias digitais podem ser usadas como instrumentos para possibilitar a criação de adaptações amadoras. O objetivo dessa pesquisa é descrever como a adaptação multiplataforma Romeus & Julietas é apresentada e interpretar e explicar as escolhas adaptativas focando nas questões provocadas pela própria adaptação. O objeto de estudo exigiu uma abordagem metodológica multidisciplinar, que foi ajustada conforme o propósito desse trabalho. A pesquisa iniciou através de uma perspectiva descritiva para que fossem geradas ideias e, depois disso, a abordagem formal e cultural foram integradas. Por fim, a adaptação multiplataforma Romeus & Julietas apresenta um comentário crítico contextualizado e aborda a história dos amantes arquetípicos criativamente. / The present research explores a student amateur adaptation of Romeo & Juliet to social networks developed by at risk communities in Bagé, a city in the border region of Brazil and Uruguay. The object of study is the multiplatform adaptation Romeus & Julietas, which is a reinterpretation of the young lovers’ story in a digital environment. Each act of the play is shown or told in a different platform (through texts, images and sounds) and the reader needs to navigate through the adaptation filling in the gaps, recognizing references to the archetypical characters, and connecting the dots between the parts of the story. This dissertation raises the hypothesis that adaptation might be a tool to make Shakespeare’s work more accessible to people and that digital media can be used as an instrument to make an amateur adaptation happen. The objective of this dissertation is to describe how the multiplatform adaptation Romeus & Julietas is presented and to interpret and explain the adaptational choices by focusing on issues raised and provoked by the adaptation itself. The object of study required multi-disciplinary methodological approaches, which were adapted to the purpose of this research. The research started from a descriptive perspective in order to generate ideas and integrate formal and cultural approaches. In conclusion, the multiplatform adaptation Romeus & Julietas provides a contextualized critical commentary and accesses the star-crossed lovers’ archetype creatively.
