Uma análise freudiana da obesidade / A Freudian analysis of obesity

Raquel Berg 22 April 2008 (has links)
It is observed nowadays a significant increase in the amount of people suffering from obesity. Although have been highlighted the psychological factors involved in this disturbance food, the majority of the procedures of treatment is done only on the body and the modeling of behavior, without regard the psychological dynamics that operates in such cases. In this context, the present study aimed to examine, from the Freudian referential, as obesity is articulated to the search for an ideal body and linked to the symptoms of food diseases. Thus, it is expected to contribute to the study of metapsychology of obesity, in the field of contemporary psychopathologies related to the body, as well as obtaining subsidies for the psychoanalytic clinic in hospitals. So, when you put in evidence the link between the body, in the view of the Freudian reference, and the notion of the body as part of Medicine, the aims was to shape up tools that helped in the treatment of obese patients, obtaining data to investigate the appearance of new symptoms after more invasive treatments such as bariatric surgery, because the reduction in weight does not prevent their formation. To carry out this search, Freudian texts were examined and its commentators referred to the issue, and then was made a review of the literature.

O corpo capturado : a enlace da linguagem na constituição do corpo pulsional / The captured body: the enlacement of the language in the constituiton of the pulsional body

It is dicussed the passage performed by Sigmund Freud of the classical anatomy to the origins of the psychoanalytical thought, investigating their ruptures with the neurology. As well it is investigated the hypothesis that the neurological explanation of body in representation is one of the bridges for an explanation that involves associative conception with which Freud begins this refutation of the neurology. The most profound marks of this rupture, however, are found in Jackson's Influence on the founder of the psychoanalysis. That gives, more precisely, by the introduction of the operation of the language as a fundamental element for the appearance of the concept of psychic aid, which it involves an original articulation, properly by Freud, among body and language. Frau this point on, it is adopted as an object Freud's Study on aphasia and the failure of the anatomical model before the symptoms of the body in the hysteria. It is supposed there that Freud conceives for the first time the language not as a natural function, but as fundamental element in the elucidation of the psychic aid and in the constitution of the body, as well as their effects in the hysterical body. It is argued that the function of the imaginary proclaimed in the Lacan¿s theory of the apprenticeship of the mirror represents one of the theoretical pillars for an explanation of the domain of the body by the child as language effect. It is stressed the importance of the phonological oppositions in the joint process of the registration of the imaginary with the symbolic, in the investigation of Fort/Da's Game. Thus it is emphasised that the game of presence and absence as the matrix of significant opposition which enables the introduction of the subject in the language and in the domain of the body. It is considered an approach between Freud and Saussure through of the constitution of external and internal alterity to the language. Finally, it is concluded that some pathological consequences are related to the absence of the speech from Other primordial in the man's constitution as a being of language / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutor em Linguística

The Prism of war : Shaw's treatment of war in Arms and the man and Heartbreak house

Matsuba, Stephen N. January 1987 (has links)
Many critics examine Shaw's plays in terms of the subjects they deal with, but they often ignore what aspects of these subjects Shaw draws on or how he uses them. One subject that appears in many of his works is war. This thesis examines Shaw's treatment of war in Arms and the Man and Heartbreak House, and attempts to discover a common element between them that reveals something not only about the plays themselves, but also about Shaw's drama in general. The chapter on Arms and the Man notes how Shaw makes war a highly visible element of the play, but avoids dealing with issues directly related to war. Shaw does not draw on war itself, but on its image. The sources for Catherine's and Bluntschli's impressions of both war and Sergius—Lady Butler's paintings, the military melodrama and extravaganza, Tennyson's "Charge of the Light Brigade," and accounts of the Battle of Balaklava—indicate that the play's focus is not on war, but on how one perceives the world. This idea is further reinforced by Shaw's own views about idealism, romanticism, and realism. Unlike Arms and the Man, war is an integral part of Heartbreak House. Shaw uses elements from the British homefront during the First World War—the wasted lives of England's youth, the lies of the government and the press, and the potential for violence both on the front and at home during the conflict—to help create the play's deep sense of crisis and impending doom. But as with Arms and the Man, Heartbreak House is not a play about war. Whereas war is highly visible in the former, its presence is negligible in the latter: there are no military characters or any clear indication that a war is in progress until the end of the play. Moreover, Shaw does not draw on sources related only to the war. Thus while Heartbreak House was born largely out of the despair of the First World War, its themes go beyond that conflict to deal with questions about the individual, the family, and the fabric of society itself. This thesis concludes by briefly examining Saint Joan, and notes that it combines the two approaches to war found in Arms and the Man and Heartbreak House, but distances its intended audience—the English—by using a historical conflict where Englishmen are the enemy. In comparing the three plays' treatment of war, one can conclude that the common element in Shaw's treatment of war is his distancing of an audience from the subject itself. Moreover, one discovers that this distancing is related to the nature of the subjects that Shaw uses for his plays. Only subjects that he believed were complex were suitable for creating his dramatic works. Therefore, it is fruitless for critics to examine Shaw's plays for his opinions about a subject; they should concentrate on how Shaw uses these subjects in his plays instead. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate
