Inter-textual Indirection in Heartbreak House : disregarded roundabouts and failed provocations

Lepitre, Mark 18 April 2018 (has links)

Exploring Fear and Freud's The Uncanny

Grizzle, Eric 05 1900 (has links)
Fear is one of the oldest and most basic of human emotions. In this thesis, I will explore the topic of fear in relation to literature, both a staple of the horror genre as well as a device in literary works, as well as in my own writings. In addition, I will use Sigmund Freud's theory of the “uncanny” as a possible device to examine the complexities of fear and its effects both on the mind and body through the medium of literature, and, more specifically, where and how these notions are used within my own short stories. By exploring how and why certain fears are generated, we may be able to better examine our own reactions in this regard.

De Stirner desde Heidegger

Carmona Tabja, Miguel January 2013 (has links)

The psychological nature of conscience in Freudian theory

Maxfield, Otis A. January 1957 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / This dissertation attempts to investigate the psychological nature of the conscience in Freudian theory and evaluate it in the light of certain neo-Freudian and non-Freudian findings. Special attention is given to the original work of Sigmund Freud and particular emphasis is placed on his concept of the super-ego, In psychological literature conscience is generally referred to as the super-ego. For Freud, the super-ego comes into being through the psychic processes of repression, identification and introjection. Its central task is that of playing the role within the personality once occupied by the parental or other authorities. The super-ego tends to accent the harshness, severity and restrictiveness of the parents far more than their love and kindness. Other Freudians, notably Bergler, Flugel, Klein and Jones expand Freud's early theories of conscience as a stern and punitive tendency in personality. They see the ideal self-image as of little value and rooted in unrealistic expectations [TRUNCATED]

A ética na educação : uma perspectiva psicanalítica

Fürst, Rosane January 2003 (has links)

Banking and Finance in Cache Valley, 1856-1956

Hurren, Patricia Kaye 01 May 1956 (has links)
For one hundred years Cache Valley has been a growing segment of the American economy. Alternating periods of national financial stress and prosperity have been reflected in this Valley. In addition, Cache Valley has been confronted with certain distinct economic and financial problems and has produced her own solutions to these problems. Although her economy is based in large part on agriculture, the existence of the state agricultural college and a number of industries in her midst has induced economic growth and influenced economic development. Cache Valley provides fertile ground for study of a representative segment of the American economy. Likewise, it offers a fruitful case-study of Utah, Western, and Mountain economic development. Few of the men who lived during the making of Cache Valley's early history are living today to tell its story with their own lips. With the help of those who are today living a new Cache Valley financial story, the writer has completed a history of finance using both primary and secondary sources.

Raffaello Squarise (1856-1945) : the colonial career of an Italian maestro

Murray, David, n/a January 2005 (has links)
This work examines the life of Raffaello Squarise (1856-1945), an Italian maestro who was a leading musician in the city of Dunedin, New Zealand, from 1889 until his retirement in 1933. Squarise worked as a professional in a predominantly amateur musical environment, and this thesis demonstrates his widely-felt presence and discernible influence in Dunedins cultural life, through his activities as a violinist, teacher, conductor, and composer. Furthermore, it illustrates the nature of the active musical culture in Dunedin, through Squarises participation in established local practices and the contrast provided by the otherness of his Italian ethnicity. The thesis shows that a two-way adaptive process took place between Squarise and the Dunedin community, as each engaged with the unfamiliar culture of the other. The success of Squarises musical career in the antipodes, it is argued, was based upon his willingness to adapt to the cultural, intellectual, and musical environment of his adopted home. The method used in this study is that of interpretative biography: it conveys the experience of the individual while emphasizing context through the subjects interaction with his environment. The sources of the research are mainly archival, and include Squarises personal papers, newspapers, the archives of local music organizations, and music ephemera. These are augmented by interviews undertaken with some of the few people (nearly sixty years since his death) who knew Squarise. The thesis is a study of the public more than the private man, but the sources are extensive enough to provide a thorough representation of Squarises professional activities.

Battle of Big Bend

Applen, Jeffery A. 03 December 1997 (has links)
The Battle of Big Bend was the last significant battle of the Rogue River Indian Wars. The battle occurred 27-28 May 1856 in the Oregon Territory. The location of the battle was along the Rogue River at a place known as the Big Bend, approximately eight miles up river from the modern town of Agness, in Curry County, Oregon. The battle was fought between one reinforced Army company; Company "C", 1st Dragoons, and a large group of Indians from many different bands. Captain Andrew Jackson Smith was the commanding officer of Company "C" during the battle, and Chief John, a member of the Dakubetede Indian band, lead all the warriors. After the first few hours of fighting, the soldiers had suffered so many casualties that they could not break out of their surrounded position without abandoning their dead and wounded. But on the other hand, the soldiers had established their defensive position on a ridge line which provided them a strong tactical advantage which the Indians could not overcome in spite of their early battle success. After thirty hours of combat, Company "G", 1st Infantry, under the command of Captain Christopher C. Augur, came to the aid of the surrounded soldiers. When Company "G" entered the fight, the Indian warriors elected to quit fighting, and under moderate pressure moved off the field of battle into the surrounding mountains. The purpose of this research was to definitively identify the location of the defensive position used by Company "C", and perform data recovery for the Forest Service using archaeological field methods. The field strategy relied heavily on metal detectors to locate battle related artifacts over the battle area. Using data collected during fieldwork, and correlating it to primary reference sources and materials, the battle position of Company "C" was located for the United States Forest Service. / Graduation date: 1998
