Vocal parlor songs of the Civil War by George Frederick Root

Walters, John A. January 2002 (has links)
The United States Civil War continues to be an intriguing aspect of history to both scholar and layperson. In light of this broad interest, the relatively small amount of scholarly study of music created by American composers during these years is conspicuous. One of the war's significant composers, both in relationship to the composition and publication of songs in America, was George Frederick Root. Not only were Root's compositions numerous, several pieces assumed major positions in the ongoing sociopolitical musings of a nation seeking to process these turbulent years. This document explores Root's development and productivity as a Civil War era composer and publisher. It also considers his music as representative of the scores of popular compositions that reflected the spirit, artistry, politics, religion, and social processing by the people of the United States of America during one of the most defining periods of its relatively short existence.Chapter one serves as an introduction. It identifies the context, scope, methodology, and delimitation of the study.Chapter two provides a brief overview of the social and cultural climate of the country at the time of the Civil War. It identifies how various forms of artistic expression carried the war directly into private parlors and public squares. More specifically, it discusses the role of parlor songs not only as an important cultural expression for the nation, but also as a valuable commodity for composers and publishers of music such as George Frederick Root.Chapter three describes the developmental years of Root as a composer and businessman. From Willow Farm to the first Normal Music Institute, Root built a foundation of experience and skill that set the scene for a significant impact upon American culture. Influenced by musicians such as Lowell Mason, Louis Gottschalk, and Stephen Foster, his musical landscape was diverse and deeply rooted in the language of popular culture. George Root partnered with his brother Ebenezer Root and business associate Cauncey Cady at the Chicago-based publishing firm of Root and Cady to provide a production and delivery system for music that infiltrated all areas of the country.Chapter four is a collection of Root's thirty-six vocal Civil War parlor songs published by the Root and Cady Publishing Company. The songs are reproduced from the original sheet music. Each song is summarized and the entire collection is analyzed based upon musical and textual considerations.Chapter five provides a summary of this project as well as questions for further study. / School of Music

This paper deals with the novel O Filho do Pescador (1843), by Antônio Gonçalves Teixeira e Sousa, as well as with a bibliographical survey on his literary production that was dispersed from 1840 to 1860 in some publications in Rio de Janeiro. The objective is the rescue of his work because of its important role in the creation of the Brazilian novel, in the beginnings of the 19th century. The proposition is largely justified because with the work of Teixeira e Sousa the Brazilian narrative fiction begins and literary criticism never gave the due attention to it (despite its so many reprints) and, what's more, no attempt has been made to collect all his writings forgotten in so many magazines and papers of the 19th century, as well as the literary criticism of the time. Collecting all the literary reviews of Teixeira e Sousa's work up to the 20th century demonstrates that the opinions issued since the 19th century are very similar, what makes evident the lack of attention given to the author by brazilian researchers.

Goethe's theory of colours: Rudolf Steiner's foundation for an impulse in painting

Coetzee, Cyril Lawlor January 1984 (has links)
From Introduction: In his influential treatise, Concerning the Spiritual in Art, Wassily Kandinsky refers to Goethe's "prophetic remark" made in connection with the relationship between the arts in which Goethe had asserted that "painting must count this relationship her main foundation". Kandinsky went on to say that Painting in his day stood "at the first stage of a road by which she abstraction of composition". I will, according to her thought and arrive own possibilities, make art an finally at purely artistic What he seems to have been suggesting is that form, colour and sound are differentiated expressions of a unifying spiritual content, that this spiritual content lives also somehow in the human soul and that it is the new task of the artist to awaken original creativity from out of this spirit by working consciously in creative empathy with the laws implicit in form, colour and sound. The extent to which this view of creativity is indebted to Goethe is only fully realised when it is discovered how closely Kandinsky's writings on colour recapitulate his. In an unpublished essay: Goethe's Theory of Colours : Its relation to some aspects in . the history of Art, Michael Grimly argues that not only Kandinsky in Germany but also Chevreul, the colour-theoretician who was, in France, the leading light, in a technical sense, both of Delacroix and of the Impressionists simply repeats in his writings on Colour many of the ideas that Goethe had already formulated.

An Appeal to Reason: Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, and Whig Presidential Politics, 1836-1848

Teague, William Joseph, 1941- 12 1900 (has links)
American politics from 1832 to 1848 underwent a profound transformation. Whereas in the early years of the republic politics had been based on deference and elitism, by the early 1830's a definite change in the political arena had occurred. With the coming of the "Age of Jackson, " the political rules and styles of the older era began to change. The politics of deference began to give way to the politics of "availability." Because this study is a discussion, examination, and analysis of Webster's and Clay's "appeal to reason, " the sources most heavily consulted were the published and microfilmed correspondence, speeches, and papers of these two statesmen. Other personal papers, correspondence, memoirs, and biographies of other central personalities of the middle period, both protagonists and antagonists, were used in order to place Webster and Clay in proper historical perspective. This dissertation is organized chronologically, and it traces and analyzes the evolution of the candidacies of Webster and Clay for the presidency from the early 1830's through the four presidential elections from 1836 to 1848. Each chapter includes an examination of Clay's and Webster's attempts to secure the Whig nomination and gain the presidency through forceful appeals to the voters' sense of logic and reason. Each chapter also includes a discussion and analysis of why these two men always failed.

This paper investigates the pedagogical principles of Paulo Freire and Rudolf Steiner in how they approach the student reality, as influenced by electronic media - television, videogame and computer. The methodology is qualitative and data were collected in the pedagogic projects and semi-structured interviews. The management teams and three teachers from each school, one Waldorf and one Freire, both in the interior of São Paulo State, were interviewed. Data analysis used the evidentiary paradigm proposed by Carlo Ginzburg. It was concluded that the two pedagogies have in common not using handouts and encouragement of the teacher‟s autonomy. In addition, the Waldorf prioritizes the individual development of students towards the social, and Freire, the social context as a formative basis for the construction of the individual. In addressing the electronic media, it was identified care: the Waldorf pedagogy defends the artistic experience and an individual pace of driving of the contents, as impulse to meet the needs of students; Freire's pedagogy believes in the interdisciplinary content, practiced in the form of projects that change every year, attracting the interest of students. Steiner and Freire did not live with twenty-first century technology, but their contributions warn that electronic media are not the most important part in the school context; therefore, humanistic education, advocated by both, seeks to educate the individuals critically and independently, historically situated in the world. To be a teacher imply educate himself/herself permanently, and consider the student action from student‟s being and recognizing

Preludio do romance brasileiro : Teixeira e Sousa e as primeiras narrativas ficcionais / Prelude of Brazilian novel : Teixeira e Sousa and the first fiction narratives

O estudo da produção ficcional de Teixeira e Sousa permite conhecer parte das questões que estiveram em voga nos anos em que se deu a formação do romance brasileiro, bem como observar as dificuldades enfrentadas e as soluções encontradas pelos escritores brasileiros responsáveis pela produção das primeiras narrativas nacionais / Abstract: This thesis discusses part of the formation of Brazilian novel from the study of the works and trajectory of Antonio Gonçalves Teixeira e Sousa, considered, by many specialists, the first Brazilian novelist. In the twentieth-century literary historiography, this writer is usually referred as a secondary author whose published stories were lacking in aesthetic qualities. However, the number of editions and auspicious critics that his work obtained during the nineteenth century indicates that, despite the formal problems, Teixeira e Sousa's novels had a good reception by his contemporaries. The study of his texts helps us to verify that the author put the emphasis on the aspects greatly appreciated by the novel criticism of that period and by the first Brazilian writers: morality and local color. The analysis of Teixeira e Sousa's narratives allow us to know part of the issues in vogue during the period of the formation of Brazilian novel, as well as observe the difficulties faced by and the solutions found by the first Brazilian fiction writers in the first national narratives / Doutorado / Historia e Historiografia Literaria / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

The history of Theopolis Mission, 1814-1851

Currie, Marion Rose January 1983 (has links)
This thesis is an investigation of the part played by Theopolis Mission on the Frontier, in the community (both secular and religious)and in the context of race relations. The Journal itself provides the terse, sometimes angry core of commentary on the total situation, and an attempt has been made, by setting it in a broader context, to dispel some of the myths which persist about the role of the Christian missionary, about Khoi Missions (in sharp contast to Xhosa Missions) and about Dr John Phllip. A clear picture has emerged of a people whose life-style, antecedents and history have been inadequately researched in tne period subsequent to 1800.
