The four Mephisto waltzes of Franz Liszt

Barrington, Barrie M. 05 1900 (has links)
The four Mephisto Waltzes of Franz Liszt constitute the focus of the present paper. Aside from the fascination they hold as individual works, they form an intriguing group related by title and heritage yet made distinct by important structural differences. Also, the separation of more than 20 years between the completion of the first and the last means that as a group they illustrate well the changes of style and concerns in Liszt’s composing. In this paper, the four works are discussed in a manner that reflects a shift in their dramatic source. The first two waltzes are closely tied to the poem Faust by Nikolaus Lenau and derive most of their drama from that extra musical link. The latter two pieces, however, exhibit fewer connections to the poem but contain compelling tonal and structural features. The first two chapters discuss the First and Second Mephisto Waltzes respectively with an emphasis on those aspects that are most closely associated with Lenau's Faust. In addition, certain passages that are not necessarily tied to the poem but are interesting in themselves are discussed. An example of this is the coda of the Second Mephisto Waltz and its effect on the piece's overall tonality. The third chapter discusses those few elements of the Third and Fourth Mephisto Waltzes that can be seen as stemming from Lenau's poem, while the final two chapters are made up of tonal and structural analyses of these latter two waltzes. The Third Mephisto Waltz, in particular, is treated to a more intense analysis since it is the most problematic of the group. In this piece, the overall tonic is unclear as two different, yet related, keys struggle to dominate, with neither coming to a clear and decisive victory. F-sharp major and D-sharp minor are supported in turn throughout the work and can be seen to coexist at times when the piece is viewed in its background. The Fourth Mephisto Waltz, although tonally more clear, contains a dramatic game of frustrated expectations and then unexpected fulfillment as the tonic, F-sharp, is strongly implied twice and only later is attained with little preparation. In order to come to terms with some of the problems posed by these works, I have used a modified form of Schenkerian analysis. Departures from, or additions to standard techniques are mentioned within the appropriate chapters. Since the four Mephisto Waltzes (especially the latter two) have not been exhaustively analysed, it is hoped that this study makes some contribution to the field of Liszt research.

Opacity in transparency : from drawings and photographs of the modern domestic spaces by Mies van der Rohe

Wu, Xin, 1970- January 2000 (has links)
Building with glass, Mies van der Rohe expressed his singular vision of glass---almost nothing. Among the few things that remain in his minimalist domestic space, the body of a female sculpture holds conspicuous opacity. To seek the signification of this opacity in the transparency of Mies's architecture, this thesis analyzes his design drawings and the photographs of his buildings through a phenomenological reading. The juxtaposition and a parallel development between the presence of the opaque body and the view of glass throughout the evolution of his glass house are discovered. The discovery brings to light the finding that the opaque body is an irreducible substance in fulfilling Mies's ideal of modern house. This opacity in transparency reveals the maternal materiality that is the essence of human dwelling. Three chapters constitute this thesis, Chapter 1 introduces Mies's vision of glass and its representations; chapter 2 examines various views of the architect's glass house designs in drawings and photographs; chapter 3 explores the significance of the inherent opacity in Mies's design philosophy of modern house.

The fantaisist poets, a renewal of early twentieth century French poetry?

Piantoni, Antoine 11 December 2015 (has links)
Among the answers given to the language crisis triggered by Mallarmé, what consideration can we show to the one promoted by the fantaisist poets of early 20th century? This thesis proposes a new reflection on the aesthetical input from a group nothing short of heterogeneous in its composition amid the emergence of literary avant-gardes. First of all, we will recount the steps of the constitution of a short-lived collective entity, as the group’s trajectory is much alike a comet lost in the cataclysm of the Great War. A sociological approach based on seldom browsed archives informs us both about the prolegomena of a collective experience and the ramifications of nostalgic memories long after the group had ceased to exist in its primitive form. We shall then examine the notional content of fantaisie as the primary element of polymorphous poetics which combine respect for the French literary tradition with the rejection of any dogmatism or theory. We observe that fantaisie works as a vacant slate set to welcome speculations from critics who try and compensate the lack of definition claimed by the group, whose production is branded by the hesitation between elegiac melancholy and humoristic dissonance. Do fantaisist poets offer propose a rebuttal to the threat of obsolescence surrounding the very notion of fantaisie or are they only the echo of a centuries-old phenomenon whose last incarnation melts with the appetence for pastiche and forgery?

The role of secular discourse in theological anthropology and the doctrine of sin : a comparative study of Alistair McFadyen and Karl Barth

Russell, Edward J. N. January 2003 (has links)
Contemporary theology increasingly is concerned with 'inter-disciplinary dialogue'. There has, however, been little work done on the under-girding structures of such a dialogue. The central concern of this thesis is to explore the methodological foundations for the relation between 'theology' and 'secular discourse'. Although there are many possibilities for testing the relation between theology and secular discourse, theological anthropology and the doctrine of sin are used as the primary testing grounds because they are central to the concerns of much contemporary systematic theology as well as being areas to which the secular world has much to contribute. Alistair McFadyen's and Karl Barth's work in these areas is adopted as the particular focus of the thesis. Together their work offers a rich environment for analysing the methodological issues at stake in the relationship between theology and secular discourse. The primary aim of the thesis is to offer an approach to interdisciplinary dialogue which maintains 'the priority of God' in theological method whilst recognising that engagement with secular discourse enables theology 'to do its job better'. Drawing from McFadyen's and Barth's work in theological anthropology and the doctrine of sin, some methodological foundations for structuring the relation between theology and secular discourse are laid out and stated in a more widely applicable form.

Three foundations of ethics in Maritain, Stace, and Ramsey

Rothwell, Mel-Thomas January 1956 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The problem of this dissertation is two-fold: (1) A study of the ethical theories of Jacques Maritain, Walter Terence Stace, and Paul Ramsey, and (2) an attempt to classify moral theories in the light of three basic types of relation between man, moral standards, and reality. The analysis, comparison, and critical study of the three representative moral theorists are correlated with a view to illustrating the kinds of issues involved in the reduction of the moral standards to three foci, as a novel and useful classification. Hence, the field of moral theory has been divided into three foci designated as Imposed Ethics, represented by Maritain, Immanent Ethics, represented by Stace, and Imparted Ethics, represented by Ramsey. It is believed that when properly defined most, if not all, ethical ideals will fall within one of these three classifications or a combination of them. [TRUNCATED]

González Loyola, Rodrigo Alejandro January 2009 (has links)
