Entre 1871 e 1888, na capital do Ceará, observamos uma série de mudanças econômicas e sociais que influenciaram no cotidiano de seus habitantes mais humildes. É notória a articulação entre o fim da escravidão e a constituição de novas práticas nas relações de trabalho que visavam manter a subordinação dos trabalhadores. Algumas das medidas de coerção tiveram como alvo o serviço doméstico na capital, onde se encontrava a maioria da população pobre, livres e egressos do cativeiro da Província do Ceará. A análise de fontes como as posturas para o serviço doméstico, os livros de registros de criados, termos de tutela e contratos de soldada permitiram visualizar os conflitos e as relações sociais e de trabalho estabelecidas entre escravos/empregados e senhores/patrões.

It has pointed the problems out of the writing of the History in the XIX century, the teaching in your relation with sphere of moral and religion, and the punishment of the school. / As letras da lei x a lei das letras: Exames de Capacidade Profissional e a Instrução Pública na Província do Ceará (1856-1888). Este trabalho investiga, a partir dos exames de Capacidade Profissional, diversas temáticas pertinentes ao ensino primário. Iniciando por compreender o próprio ensino primário, seus mestres bem como os meandros do processo de seleção do magistério público. Discutindo a construção dos conteúdos e as formas como os mestres se expressavam em seus exames. Ressaltando problemáticas da escrita da História no século XIX, o ensino em sua relação com as esferas da moral e religião, bem como os castigos no ambiente escolar.

À travers l’analyse du discours environnemental de l’auteur et conférencier Grey Owl (1888 – 1938), ce mémoire constitue une étude de la perception environnementale des cultures autochtones et occidentales au Canada au début du XXe siècle. L’objectif est d’identifier la perception environnementale dans sa dépendance de l’état de la Nature, de l’époque et de la culture de l’individu et de la société. Avant-gardiste, Grey Owl intégrait des éléments des concepts de mode de vie durable et d’écotourisme dans son discours. Il représentait également l’ambivalence des sociétés occidentales envers la Nature. Sans sa transformation en Autochtone, cet Anglais aux cheveux longs n’aurait pu faire connaître au grand public la nécessité de sauver la Wilderness et les cultures autochtones. Il a contribué à l’image romantique créée des Autochtones par des Occidentaux. Encore aujourd’hui, longtemps après la colonisation, les Autochtones, peuples chers à Grey Owl, ressentent une perte d’identité. / Through an analysis of the environmental discourse of the author and speaker Grey Owl (1888 – 1938), this thesis studies the environmental perception of Native and Western cultures in Canada in the early 20th century. The objective is to identify the environmental perception in its dependency of the state of Nature, the epoch and the culture of the individual and the society. Avant-gardist, Grey Owl integrated elements of a sustainable way of life and ecotourism in his discourse. He too represented the ambivalence of Western societies to the Nature. Without his transformation into a Native, this Englishman with his long hair could not have made known the necessity of saving the wilderness and the native cultures to a wide audience. He contributed to the romantic image created from the Natives by the Western societies. Still today, long after the colonization, the Natives, peoples dear to Grey Owl, feel a loss of identity.

During Matthew Arnold's lifetime England was in permanent transition: the emergence of a modern industrial society, the new science and liberalized Christianity, and the democratic and humanitarian movements. To be a writer during this time required a curious and precarious balances an alternation of steadfastness and change. Arnold's moving back and forth between the traditions of romanticism and rationalism does present a challenge to the contemporary reader; no single or systematic approach can be applied to his works. An examination of a selection of Arnold's poems, written predominantly between 1845 and 1857, shows the author's reassessment of man's place in the new cosmology as necessitated by the scientific and technological advances of the century. The poems selected also suggest movement away from the romantic concept of the greatness of the past and yesterday's larger-than-life hero toward an acceptance of the best life as represented by the present generation of men. Arnold's theory, that the best self or right reason manifests itself in heroic men, in leaders, and confirms ordinary men, is found throughout the poems studied.
