Technique and Meaning in Katherine Anne Porter's Short FictionStewart, Sally Ann 05 1900 (has links)
This investigation attempts to uncover a unity of both meaning and technique as reflected in eight of Katherine Anne Porter's best known and most characteristic stories-- "Old Mortality," "Noon Wine," "Pale Horse, Pale Rider," "Flowering Judas," "A Day's Work," "The Cracked Looking-Glass," "He," and "Holiday." An analysis of each story reveals that the core of Katherine Anne Porter's work is a "delicate balancing of rival considerations" specifically and deliberately designed to reveal to the reader the complexity and ambiguity of any situation or human relationship. The ambiguity within her stories is therefore deliberate.
The final chapter, "The Open End and the Acceptance of Paradox," asserts that Katherine Anne Porter's technique is determined not by her classical conception of literary form, but by her philosophy of life.

La presente tesis se centra en el resurgimiento de la minería en la sierra central del Perú desde
fines del siglo XIX hasta 1930. La actividad minera experimenta cambios sustanciales en la
composición del capital, sistemas de trabajo y masa laboral. La mediana minería es desplazada
por la empresa Cerro de Pasco la que opera como enclave sometiendo a las demás actividades
económicas. Las comunidades campesinas cercanas a los campamentos, poseedoras de recursos
propios, fuerzan a los empresarios a utilizar el enganche para proveerse de mano de obra pues la
que acude libremente sujeta su presencia, a sus obligaciones en el campo. La migración de los
comuneros jóvenes del valle Mantaro es habitual pero va aumentando conforme se acentúa la
presión demográfica sobre el control de recursos agrícolas profundizándose la diferenciación
entre y dentro de los pueblos. Nuestro interés está en las relaciones entre el capital minero y los
trabajadores migrantes temporales y en descubrir las posibles razones que motivan en los
operarios de Morococha el cuestionamiento al capital logrando una mayor madurez política. La
producción fotográfica de Sebastián Rodríguez en Morococha nos motiva a estudiar su pasado.
Junto a ella, empleo fuentes orales -entrevistas a antiguos mineros- y escritas -memorias,
archivos- y bibliografía para documentar el tema desde una perspectiva de historia social. El
encuentro y mutua utilización de un modo de producción capitalista y un sistema de vida
tradicional andino generan un proceso de adaptación y asimilación en este último, profundizando
su diferenciación interna la que no llega a destruir su identidad y aprovecha el capital obtenido
mediante el salario para ampliar sus recursos en el campo. / Tesis

Anders Nygren's Agape and Eros is a classical work in the history of Christian ideas of love. It has inspired the academic debate on the relationship between Agape and Eros, while the former is a core concept in Christian theology and ethics, the latter represents the ancient Greek humanistic ethos. Nygren points out that agape and eros encounter and mingle with each other at the theoretical level. However, he suggests that in the Christian idea of love and theology, the erotic ingredient, which invades in and weakens the pure original meaning of agape, should be eliminated. In achieving this, he attempts to deny the role of eros, which manifests the existential characteristics of human being, in the Christian ethical life. Thus Nygren not only makes agape and eros distinctive in their respective meanings, but also separates them in human existential situation. / In the history of Christian theology, we can find "Tradition of Separating" which tends to separate agape from eros like Nygren does. Meanwhile, there is "Tradition of Uniting" claiming to unite the two kinds of love and Tillich's idea of love is a typical example. Therefore, an investigation of Tillich's idea of love, especially its elaboration on the agape-eros relationship, is helpful and constructive not merely to a deeper understanding of Tillich's systematic theology, but also a comprehensive and balanced understanding of the two trends mentioned above in the history of Christian theology. / In this thesis, we examine Tillich's idea of love within the context of history of ideas and trace its historical roots, so that the tradition of uniting agape-eros in the history of ideas, mainly in that of Christian theology can be demonstrated. On the one hand, we try to retrieve the Courtly Love tradition in Medieval-Renaissance ages and Marcilio Ficino's Neo-Platonist understanding of eros in Renaissance as the historical sources to the particular meaning of Tillich's eros. On the other hand, our discussion makes particular reference to Gregory of Nyssa and John of the Cross, two representatives of the Christian spiritual theologians, whose spiritual writings on love will be considered as the historical roots of Tillich's agape-eros union within the Christian tradition. At last, the present study attempts to show that the modern application of Tillich's uniting agape with eros in Christian theology and ethics, along with related secular philosophy, revitalize this "Tradition of Uniting". / Paul Tillich handles the relationship of agape-eros in his systematic theology in a way radically different from the Nygrenian way. In dealing with the relationship between agape and eros, Tillich proposes a "quadric interactive structure of love" in which the four qualities of love namely libido, eros, philia and agape united and synergized in one love. Cuvier in context : literature and science in the long nineteenth centuryKeeling, Charles Paul January 2017 (has links)
This study investigates the role and significance of Cuvier's science, its knowledge and practice, in British science and literature in the first half of the nineteenth century. It asks what the current account of science or grand science narrative is, and how voicing Cuvier changes that account. The field of literature and science studies has seen healthy debate between literary critics and historians of science representing a combination of differing critical approaches. This study asks whether we can continue work to synthesise historicist and formalist approaches, and suggests using a third narrative based approach to achieve a full complement of methodological tools. This in turn should provide more nuanced critical readings. In certain novels it has allowed me to shift the focus on literature and science enquiry to different decades. This study looks for “science stories” from scientific discourses in The Last Man, The Mill on the Floss and Bleak House. I have demonstrated the centrality of Cuvier to British science in the first half of the nineteenth century and that science's role as a model for the natural and human world, as well as informing the unstable systems of narrative characteristic of the novel genre and form. Cuvier's Essay initiated a lasting period of scientific centrality and legitimacy in British science and representation in British novels. His law of correlations applied to geology made his science both an important narrative and analogous to the empirical truth-seeking mode of the novel. The paleontological process becomes both a model for organic unity in Victorian fiction and a mode of narrative production. Cuvier's science and its discourse both produce and are reproduced in nineteenth century novels.

La siguiente investigación reflexiona sobre la pertinencia de plantear al Mapa del Perú (1880-1890) de Antonio Raimondi como un producto artístico, analizando los procesos involucrados en su elaboración, así como los alcances y discursos políticos que genera como documento e imagen oficial. Así, la imagen cartográfica se configura en una dimensión simbólica que sobrepasaría su funcionalidad científica. Para ello, presentaremos el pensamiento y contexto de la época en la cual se desarrolló este proyecto cartográfico, contenido en la gran obra enciclopédica de Raimondi titulada El Perú. Este proyecto inaugura una era de especifidades y actualizaciones, producto de una necesidad de rigor científico para el desarrollo del programa progresista de las élites gobernantes de la joven república. En este contexto, veremos que la información visual sobre el territorio peruano inclinaba su producción hacia la esfera racional y científica, dejando paulatinamente de lado, las subjetividades históricas de la representación. En la primera parte de esta investigación revisaremos este escenario en el cual la figura de Raimondi surge como autoridad, así como el pensamiento que despliega en los años de trabajo en el Perú bajo un esquema positivista. En el segundo capítulo revisaremos los antecedentes y los referentes del autor, bajo los cuales su obra toma forma. Analizaremos las metodologías de trabajo que ejecuta en su proyecto y la manera en que los aspectos sensibles se encuentran presentes durante esos procesos. El tercer capítulo enfatiza el sustrato simbólico que contiene su proyecto cartográfico. De esta manera, la lectura del Mapa del Perú desde la historia del arte se hace pertinente, permitiendo rescatar una cualidad estética latente y velada por la etiqueta científica. Abrir 3 esta ventana a nuevas posibilidades de interpretación, nos permite pensar sobre la manera en que el Mapa del Perú de Antonio Raimondi resulta un testimonio de la conjunción de fines artísticos, científicos y políticos en una sola imagen total, es decir, una abstracción en la cual rescatamos un aspecto sensible fundamental en la mirada de su autor: El Paisaje. Así, el Mapa puede ser leído como un documento oficial que revela una resistencia artística en medio de un contexto racional y positivista –a escala global- y que obedece a un determinado proyecto de país regido por una concepción funcional y utilitaria del territorio y la naturaleza. / Tesis

Orientadora: Ana Clara Bortoleto Nery / Banca: Rosane Michelli de Castro / Banca: Elizabeth Figueiredo de Sá / Resumo: A presente dissertação tem como propósito apresentar resultados de pesquisa que teve como objetivo analisar as formas pelas quais os saberes pedagógicos se constituíram nas Escolas Normais paulistas. Tais saberes eram ensinados por meio das matérias pedagógicas do currículo escolar, da observação de práticas docentes em escolas primárias e por meio de livros e periódicos presentes na biblioteca escolar. Ao conjunto de saberes e práticas que apresentava elementos de como ensinar, ao futuro professor, compreendemos aqui como formação pedagógica, desde a organização da escola e da sala de aula até a aplicação de métodos de ensino. O ponto de partida da pesquisa foi a Reforma Caetano de Campos (1890) que determinou as cadeiras e matérias da Escola Normal da Capital, com a Escola Modelo como local de aplicação do método intuitivo. Dentro do recorte temporal, tivemos como locus de formação de professores no estado, além da Escola Normal da Capital, as Escolas Complementares (1893-1910) e as Escolas Normais Primárias e Secundárias (1911-1920). Em 1920, fechando o recorte com a Reforma Sampaio Doria, ocorreu a unificação das Escolas Normais, num único modelo. Como aporte teórico tomamos o conceito de cultura pedagógica que, segundo Marta Carvalho (2000) "são estilos distintos de organização do campo dos saberes representados como necessários à prática docente". Outra referência importante é o de modelo escolar paulista (CARVALHO, 2011), segundo o qual a autora denomina como "modelo p... (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The present dissertation aims to present research results that aimed to analyze the ways in which pedagogical knowledge was constituted in the Normal Schools of São Paulo. Such knowledge was taught through the teaching materials of the school curriculum, observation of teaching practices in primary schools and through books and periodicals present in the school library. To the set of knowledge and practices that presented elements of how to teach, to the future teacher, we understand here as a pedagogical formation, from the organization of the school and the classroom to the application of teaching methods. The starting point of the research whose results are presented is the Caetano de Campos Reform (1890) that determined the chairs and subjects of the Normal School of the Capital, with the Model School as the place of application of the intuitive method. Parallel to the Normal School, within the temporal cut, we will have in the state of São Paulo the Complementary Schools (1893-1910) and the Normal Primary and Secondary Schools (1911-1920). In 1920, with the Reforma Sampaio Doria, the unification of the Normal Schools took place, in a single model.
