Marcas da cultura local em tradução do conto "No baile acadiano", de Kate Chopin

A autora norte-americana Kate Chopin (1850-1904) é conhecida por sua vasta produção de contos ambientados no estado de Louisiana, os quais exibem uma representação das peculiaridades locais. Em vários dos contos, Chopin focaliza a cultura Cajun e propõe uma representação ficcional da língua daquela comunidade (língua crioula Cajun) através da fala dos personagens, como ocorre em "No baile acadiano". Dividida em três capítulos, a presente dissertação almeja investigar se a questão da regionalidade, representada por marcas da cultura local e de identidade cultural dos personagens, influencia na permanência de expressões em língua francesa e língua Cajun no processo tradutório do conto At the ‘Cadian Ball para a língua portuguesa: "No baile acadiano". A pesquisa permitiu constatar que houve influência das questões culturais e de regionalidades na tradução do conto, uma vez que o uso da língua transmite informação social, aspecto exemplificado durante a alternância de códigos entre os personagens dependendo do interlocutor. The research showed that there was influence of cultural issues and regionalities on the translation of the story because the use of language conveys social information, aspect that was exemplified during the code-switching process among characters, depending on the interlocutor. So, it is noticeable that the translator's attitude (Denise Mariné) can be considered as respectful in relation to the author and to linguistic aspects that would be lost if such sentences and/or expressions/phraseologisms were translated into Portuguese.

Este trabalho tem como objeto de estudo dois romances – O Reino deste Mundo e O Recurso do Método, do escritor cubano Alejo Carpentier, precursor do real maravilhoso, sob uma perspectiva comparatista a partir das teorias e noções que são de interesse da literatura comparada, como o processo de transculturação na América Latina, a intertextualidade, a descolonização cultural, a carnavalização do seu discurso, a desterritorialização, o hibridismo cultural e literário, a busca da identidade cultural e da consciência latino-americana no contexto sócio-político, histórico e cultural no qual essas obras se inserem. Fundamenta-se esse estudo nas contribuições de dois teóricos latino-americanos, o etnólogo cubano Fernando Ortíz, pioneiro do conceito de transculturação, e o crítico literário uruguaio Ángel Rama, teórico da transculturação narrativa na América Latina. Destaca-se, ainda, a relevância que o ato tradutório, em geral, e a tradução literária, em particular, têm como mediadores interculturais, apontando-se algumas questões de tradução cultural nas traduções das obras para o português e o importante papel do tradutor em obras dessa natureza.

The central figure in The Awakening, Edna Pontellier, is shown in this thesis to pursue a narcissistic flight from existential reality. Following a review of contemporary criticism, Edna Pontellier's narcissism is discussed in connection with her sexuality and suicide. Sources cited range from biographies of Kate Chopin to scholarly articles to the works of modern psychologists. The emphasis throughout the thesis is on the wealth of interpretations that currently exist on The Awakening as well as the potential for further -study and interpretation in the future. Rather than viewing The Awakening as a purely feministic novel, it is stressed that The Awakening can transcend such categorization and be appreciated on many levels.

Análisis musical de tres piezas para piano del compositor Carlos Sánchez Málaga (Arequipa 1904-Lima 1995)

Esta tesis se propone realizar el análisis musical de la obra pianística más significativa del compositor arequipeño Carlos Sánchez Málaga (1904-1995), incorporando en este proceso un enfoque auto-etnográfico, complementado con mi experiencia como ejecutante de sus obras. Es en esta línea en que presentaré mis recuerdos más saltantes de mis sesiones pianísticas con Carlos Sánchez Málaga, en las cuales se intercalaban sugerencias técnicas con observaciones sobre el sentido y significado simbólico de las piezas a ejecutarse. Estas evocaciones serán sometidas a una verificación sistemática a través del análisis musical y me servirán para explicar, en base a mi propia experiencia como parte del proceso de enseñanza del compositor bajo estudio, el alcance y carácter de las obras presentadas. El análisis musical distinguirá entre cuatro aspectos: formales, modales, motívicos-temáticos y simbólicos. He seleccionado tres de las obras pianísticas más relevantes de Don Carlos: Acuarelas Infantiles, Cayma y Yanahuara, compuestas durante la década del veinte, coincidente con los años en los que el indigenismo, influencia las artes, la política y la intelectualidad en general de manera intensa. Representantes de un abordaje composicional diferente: Acuarelas Infantiles, suite cargada de imágenes impresionistas; Cayma, representación del paisaje sonoro de ese andino distrito arequipeño con reminiscencias andinas y Yanahuara, obra de programa, que se condice con el subtítulo Día de Difuntos, describiéndolo magistralmente a partir de los efectos sonoros que logra. También se revela que la obra de Sánchez Málaga está cruzada por la influencia de la armonía impresionista; de la politonalidad y la polirritmia, sin dejar de incluir la música tradicional arequipeña. / This thesis proposes to carry out the musical analysis of the most significant piano work of the Arequipa composer Carlos Sánchez Málaga (1904-1995), incorporating in this process an auto-ethnographic approach, complemented with my experience as a performer of his works. It is in this line that I will present my most striking memories of my piano sessions with Carlos Sánchez Málaga, in which technical suggestions were interspersed with observations on the meaning and symbolic meaning of the pieces to be played. These evocations will be subjected to systematic verification through musical analysis and will help me to explain, based on my own experience as part of the teaching process of the composer under study, the scope and character of the works presented. The musical analysis will distinguish between four aspects: formal, modal, motivic-thematic and symbolic. I have selected three of the most relevant piano works by Don Carlos: Acuarelas Infantiles, Cayma and Yanahuara, composed during the 1920s, coinciding with the years in which indigenismo intensely influenced the arts, politics and the intelligentsia in general. Representatives of a different compositional approach: Acuarelas Infantiles, a suite loaded with impressionist images; Cayma, representation of the soundscape of that Andean district of Arequipa with Andean reminiscences; and Yanahuara, a program work, which is consistent with the subtitle Day of the Dead, masterfully describing it from the sound effects it achieves. It is also revealed that the work of Sánchez Málaga is crossed by the influence of impressionist harmony; of polytonality and polyrhythm, while still including Arequipa’s traditional music.

Analyse d'une méthode de création [2]. 2nde partie : La solitude des mots [3] : Recherche-création autour de la problématique de l'authenticité dans le jeu de l'acteur. A partir de la composition d'un monologue, prenant sa source dans les paroles des personnages féminins des pièces de Tchekhov, et de sa mise en espace, nous avons amorcé une réflexion sur l'authenticité du jeu de l'acteur. Nous avons décomposé cette notion pour découvrir les outils nécessaires à la création d'une partition actorale : les actions physiques, la parole-action et l'organicité. A l'aide d'une matrice de production intitulée la méthode de création en dix étapes, processus actif de la révélation consciente d'une perception intuitive, proposé par Luis Thenon, nous avons travaillé sur la mise à jour des quatre lignes d'action et de leurs composantes, permettant de constituer la vie scénique du personnage. L'objet de notre recherche-création s'établit autour d'une jeune femme. Elle attend l'homme qu'elle aime pour lui déclarer son amour. Cette attente va lui permettre de faire le point sur son existence présente mais surtout passée et future. Au travers de tout cela, c'est un monologue avec et contre elle-même qu'elle engage d'où il ne ressortira qu'une profonde solitude. A partir des thèmes de l'amour, du travail et du temps, nous avons installé une exploration de l'écriture tchekhovienne et de sa logique si précise pour faire émerger un trajet cohérent de la vie scénique du personnage. John Forbes White and George Reid : artists and patrons in north-east Scotland 1860-1920

John Forbes White's contribution to the history of Art in Scotland was, for the first seventy years after his death, mentioned only in passing by the main writers on Scottish art of the day. However, two of his daughters, Ina Mary Harrower and Dorothea Fyfe, both wrote articles on aspects of their father's collecting: Ina publishing "Private Picture Galleries, The Collection of John Forbes White" in Goodwords in 1896 (pp 813-819), John Forbes White (Edinburgh) in 1918 and in 1927, "Jozef lsraels and his Aberdeen Friend" for the Aberdeen University Review (pp 108-122). A noted art historian, Ina reflected her father's taste and collecting interests in her own writings, as with, for example, "Studies of Fruit by Courbet" Apollo (Vol. L No 296 1949 pp 95-98). Dorothea, with her co-author C.S. Minto, published John Forbes White, Miller, Collector, Photographer 1831-1904 (Edinburgh 1970). The only other writers who have examined White's contribution to art in any detail were Charles Carter, who as curator of Aberdeen Art Gallery, covered art and patronage in the North-East of Scotland in numerous articles and outlined White's contribution in "Art Patronage in Scotland: John Forbes White" published in the Scottish Art Review,(Vol VI, no 2, 1957, pp. 27-30). Frances Fowle, on completion of her PhD on Alexander Reid, also discussed White's tastes in "The Hague School and the Scots, A Taste for Dutch Pictures" (Apollo August 1991 pp 108-111). George Reid was still less favoured by critics after his death. With J.L. Caw championing James Guthrie and William MacTaggart, the innovative and influential aspects of Reid's art were obscured, reduced and even sometimes credited to others. W.D. McKay in The Scottish School of Painting (London 1906) had played down Reid's part in the introduction of Realism into Scotland and Agnes McKay in her monograph on Arthur Melville (Lee on Sea, 1951) went furthest of all in portraying Reid as the enemy of a younger, more innovative group of artists, who included the subject of her book. It was to be another thirty years before Dun can Macmillan would examine Reid, in Scottish Art 1460-1990 (Mainstream, 1990) as an important landscape painter, rather than, as had been the case before, as a reactionary president of the Royal Scottish Academy and an extremely dull, if talented, portrait painter. One year later John Morrison, having completed his PhD Rural Nostalgia: Painting in XIX Scotland c.1860-1880 (St Andrews 1989) wrote of Reid's important European contacts and of the vital relationship between White and Reid in "Sir George Reid in Holland, his work with G.A. Mollinger and Jozef Israels" (Jong Holland 1991 No 4 pp 10-19). Both the assets and the faults of Alexander Macdonald's collecting were examined by Charles Carter in "Alexander Macdonald 1837-1884 - Aberdeen Art Collector" (Scottish Art Review, Vol V, no 3, 1955, pp. 23-28) and again by Francina Irwin in an exhibition catalogue entitled Alexander Macdonald: From Mason to Maecenas in 1985. My main source of material has come from the uncatalogued archive of correspondence between George Reid, John Forbes White, Jozef Israels, George Paul Chalmers, David Artz, Gerrit Mollinger, Samuel Smiles and others, most of which is housed in Aberdeen Art Gallery. Reid's unpublished autobiography, transcribed by his wife Mia, (in the same archive) was also of great use, as was an unpublished but almost complete catalogue raisonne of Reid's work, compiled, probably by Percy Bate or Harry Townend c.1912. I have also made extensive use of the papers of James Pittendrigh Macgillivray which are held by The National Library of Scotland. The descendants of John Forbes White made the works and letters in their possession freely available to me. These included the correspondence between John Forbes White and William Stott of Oldham which is cited in Chapter 6. Elements of this thesis, and particularly sections 2,3, & 4 of Chapter 4, appeared in a revised form in "Art and Patronage in Aberdeen 1860-1920", a paper that I delivered at the Scottish Society of Art History's conference on Patronage, and which was published in The Journal of the Scottish Society for Art Historians (Volume 3 1998 pp 16-24). The sixth section of Chapter 5 appeared in a revised form, in An Album of Photographs compiled by Sir John Everett Millais PRA published in Studies in Photography (Edinburgh, 1997). The discussion of the influence of Ancient Greece and Classicism in the eighth section of Chapter 7 was included in a paper entitled John Forbes White, The Classical Tradition and Ideals In Art given at the conference on "The Role of Collections In The Scottish Cultural Tradition", which was held at Aberdeen University in 1998. The third section of Chapter 7 appeared in a revised form in Robert Brough (Aberdeen Art Gallery, 1995). Appendix A contains relevant excerpts from letters and text, on which much of my research was based whilst Appendix B lists the works of art owned by John Forbes White.
