This thesis primarily analyses critically Kung's early ecclesiology with the intention of identifying important paradigmatic examples to be related to a contemporary South African Church Community. It argues that Kung's ecclesiology takes the hermeneutics of faith as its overriding theological rationale and as a result of this comes out with a particular understanding of the community of redemption. Subsequent to this primary focus in the nature of this thesis, the work further spells out clearly certain paradigmatic themes in Kung's theology and seeks to show how they can inform the ecclesiology of the CPSA. / Thesis (M.Th.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2003.

The purpose of this thesis was to describe, analyze, and evaluate the rhetorical strategies utilized by Senator Birch Bayh in his campaign for the 1974 Indiana Senatorial General Election. The analysis focused on four rhetorical transactions within the campaign:1) The Lawrence Lions Club Address, 4arion County, July 8, 1974.2) "Debate ‘74," statewide broadcast out of Indianapolis, September 1, 1974.3) The American Postal Workers' Union Address, Muncie, Indiana, October 20, 1974.4) A Democratic Rally Address, Gary, Indiana, October 31, 1974.After analyzing the audience, the man, and the rhetorical problems he faced, the study showed that Bayh faced a three-pronged motive situation of reaffirmation, subversion, and purification. By analyzing and evaluating the rhetorical strategies apparent within his rhetoric, the study attempted to determine the probable effect of Bayh's rhetorical choices. From conclusions drawn in the study, it would seem that Bayh's campaign rhetoric did have a significant influence on the outcome of the election.

National Identity, Ethnic Identity, Minoritiness...These are all categories which appear to have existed always already, categories which seem to be normative by nature. They are determinative, for they position human beings on different levels of the social ladder and organize strategically human interrelations. Yet, while these same apparently transcendental categories appropriate a position of universality, they also claim to be particular to a specific place, a specific people, a specific race etc. The disjunction inherent in these categories can be realized within this ideological contradiction. It is therefore this very disjunction that calls upon the rethinking of identity in relation to nation, ethnicity and minority. In this thesis I offer a translation of nine separate excerpts from Kobayashi Aya's account on Burakumin experience in Japan. The author's contemplation on Japaneseness and Minoritiness, her questioning of national identity as a category and of this category as predetermined become the focus of my work. While outlining the structure of Kobayashi's writing and the methods she chooses to employ, I analyze the concepts of performativity, repetition and disruption as potential options for rethinking Japaneseness and Minoritiness as categories of identity.

Este trabalho consiste em um estudo comparativo entre a Sonata n. 1 para piano e sua transcrição intitulada Divertimento para cordas de Edino Krieger. Estas obras integram o segundo período de criação do compositor, marcado pela tendência neoclássica e utilização de temas de caráter brasileiro. Ao comparar os esquemas formais das duas obras e investigar as adaptações idiomáticas ocorridas no processo de transcrição, são traçados paralelos entre a escrita pianística do compositor e elementos idiomáticos dos instrumentos de cordas.

Ao contrário da concepção linear do pensamento ocidental, o tempo mexicano, situado na tradição pré-hispânica, indica uma multiplicidade de tempos, possibilitando que variadas e distantes épocas sejam realidades presentes. Nesse enfoque, diferentes tempos da história mexicana incorporam a narrativa de Carlos Fuentes, onde é comum passado, presente e futuro estarem imbricados em circularidades que resgatam com a imaginação e a linguagem uma memória encoberta pelo discurso totalizador. Na sua obra, Carlos Fuentes percorre mitos, tempos e espaços através de uma escritura que traduz uma cultura mestiça construída por vertentes americanas e européias. No entrelaçamento da pluralidade dos mundos, descobre os acontecimentos do passado, introduzindo significações aos silêncios relegados à margem da história. Através das análises de “Las dos orillas” – conto do livro El naranjo; do romance La muerte de Artemio Cruz e de personagens que transitam nos contos de La frontera de cristal, são investigados três momentos da história mexicana: Conquista espanhola, Revolução mexicana e migrações da atualidade na fronteira. This thesis addresses two principal operas by composer, Leoš Janáček. These are Jenůfa (1903) and The Cunning Little Vixen (1923). The author’s inspiration sources and the method of processing the selected subject are introduced herein. In both operas, L. Janáček is also the author of the libretto, which forms a link between these pieces. The information is drawn from ample Janáček literature and, of course, from music papers. The direction’s point of view is based upon the gained information regarding the pieces and upon the examination of some performance interpretations. With this thesis, I have verified that a thorough familiarity with the work is an absolute necessity for one’s own direction intention. It leads to realize the fact that one can create various interpretations of one piece when having a deep and stable understanding of it.

Esta dissertação visa iniciar um processo de reconhecimento e aprofundamento sobre a arquitetura paulista, ou escola paulista, ou arquitetura brutalista paulista, com ênfase no período 1955-1975. Seu objetivo é colaborar no sentido de uma adequada qualificação dessa tendência arquitetônica autônoma, peculiar, de alta qualidade e valor indiscutível; que, pertencendo ao âmbito da arquitetura moderna brasileira, não pode ou deve ser confundida com a arquitetura da vertente carioca, da qual vai se destacar conceitualmente e nos resultados formais. A dissertação consta de duas partes, distintas e não imediatamente complementares. Na primeira parte são realizados ensaios de cunho bibliográfico, e de abordagem crítica. Inicialmente, revisando as referências esparsas e desconexas sobre essa arquitetura paulista e sobre seu qualificativo ‘brutalista’. Seguem-se estudos sobre seus possíveis precedentes notáveis, cujo reconhecimento poderá auxiliar a compreender melhor as características estéticas e éticas dessa arquitetura; sendo reexaminadas as obras dos mestres Le Corbusier e Mies Van der Rohe, destacando e nelas todo e qualquer ponto de aproximação com a arquitetura paulista brutalista; bem como reavalianda a contribuição do Novo Brutalismo inglês, de maneira a verificar se há questões estéticas e éticas comuns. Segue-se uma breve resenha dos debates contemporâneos acerca dos conceitos de tipo, modelo e estrutura formal, que ou estão presentes nos debates da escola paulista, ou serão empregados a seguir. A segunda parte da dissertação prossegue na investigação das características da escola paulista brutalista através da análise da obra residencial do arquiteto Paulo Mendes da Rocha. O recorte de análise, restrito às residências projetadas pelo arquiteto, permite um estudo aprofundado, de marco formal-arquitetônico, partindo da certeza de comparecem nessa obra alguns dos temas caros à escola paulista, quais sejam a idéia de casaapartamento, a identidade entre estrutura e volumetria edificada, a idéia de ‘caixa’ estrutural habitável, entre outros. As análises vão buscar levantar temas de debate, mais do que chegar a conclusões acabadas, sequer possíveis na obra de um criador em pleno exercício de sua capacidade profissional. A dissertação se encerra com conclusões breves e experimentais. / This dissertation aim is to begin a deepening process of recognition of São Paulo’s architecture, or Paulista School, or Brutalist Paulista School, mainly on 1955- 1975’s period. Its object is to contribute to a proper qualification of this autonomous architectural tendency, appreciated as a peculiar, high quality and valuable one. Also, to elucidate that, although belonging to the realm of Modern Brazilian Architecture, it can not or should not be confounded with the Carioca School; inasmuch as its concepts and formal results greatly differ. This dissertation includes two different and not immediately complementary sections. The first section aims to supply some bibliographical surveys, with a critical approach. First, gathering as much as possible the scattered and disconnected references about Paulista architecture and about its qualification as “Brutalist. Follows some studies on notable precedents, whose recognition can help comprehending the aesthetic and ethic characteristics of Brutalist Paulista architecture; mainly, the works of masters as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, underscoring and detaching every and each points of proximity with Brutalist Paulista architecture. Then, briefly reviewing Britain’s New Brutalism contribution, only to verify if there are any common ethic/aesthetic issues between both tendencies. Follows an overview on recent debates on the concepts of type, model and formal structure, that are either present on local Paulista debates, or are to be used on this work’s sequence. The second section wishes to examine sistematically the characteristics of the Brutalist Paulista school, through the probing of the residential work of architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha; so as, circumscribing the clipping to the houses, there can be afforded more deepen studies, oriented on a formal and architectonic focus. The selection of Mendes da Rocha half a century houses also helps to understand some widespread Brutalist Paulista architecture characteristics - like the detached apartment-house type, the close identity between structure and built volume and the preference on structural “box” idea, etc. These investigations long for arousing some initial arguments, rather than arriving to finished conclusions, quite not possible as much as it deals with the work of a living creator, still in his professional labor apex. The dissertation ends with some experimental and brief conclusions.
