This thesis starts with the analysis of three different photo collections considered as documentary sets linked by thematic connections.
O suporte teórico para realização deste trabalho procede da Genética Textual, da Lingüística, bem como da Teoria Literária / Abstract: In this thesis I study the genesis ai the poems fiam " A Herança" by Zila Mamede, attempting to understand how the writing process is built through addings, suppressions and substitutions detected in manuscrips. In so doing I tried to perceive how the poetic text is reivented, revealing itself as a paradigm that is being built until it finally fits into a stable form, as a definite text given to the public. Besides the signs of the interior discourse, I attempted to find links between hero and author and the creative process of language. The theorethical basis I use comes from Textual Genetic, Linguistics and Literary Theory / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística

Transformative or abortive? : a "de-voluntaristic" analysis of the Nationalist Revolution in modern Chinese historyLanyan, Chen 11 1900 (has links)
Interpretations of the Nationalist Revolution in modern
Chinese history, especially the so-called “Nanjing decade”
(1927-1937) are dominated by theoretical notions which see
the state as autonomous in its relationship to society.
This autonomous state model, the dissertation argues, finds
its roots in the voluntaristic ideas of Talcott Parsons.
Arguments based on Parsons’s ideas view the Nationalist
Revolution as abortive.
The dissertation rejects these views and develops an
alternative perspective based on the construction of a
quasi-market model of social relations. The theoretical
underpinnings, in contrast to Parsons’s ideas, are termed
“de-voluntaristic.” These arguments suggest that
individuals participate in, and have influence on, the
operation of the state.
The application of a quasi-market model suggests that
there was a major transformation in Chinese society during
the Nationalist period. The dissertation argues that the
Nationalist Government after 1927 did not continue to
achieve the initial objectives of the Nationalist Revolution
which, it is suggested, aimed to build a quasi-market
society. The revolution, however, was not abortive. It
transformed the political system.
In the Imperial tradition of government, local elites
protected local communities against state encroachment
through their involvement in property management. After
1927, the Nanjing Government adopted a “free market”
approach to political affairs, and centralized the use of
military and legal power to protect property against labour
and the peasants.
Peasant demands for rights to the land they tilled, a
key element in Sun Yat-sen’s programme for the revolution,
questioned the brokerage market economy, in which local
elites acted as the intermediaries of contractual partners.
Workers, in the context of industrialization, and with
support from Communist organizers, attempted to improve
working conditions. Peasants and workers contested the
power of active elites that grew in the new political order
established by. the Nationalist Government. The Nationalist
State abandoned the traditional role of the Chinese state to
protect the well-being of society. Deeply influenced by new
elites, it protected capital accumulation and safeguarded
the sanctity of contracts.
The Nationalist Revolution ultimately failed as it was
unable to resist the invasions of the Japanese, or the
alternative social formulations of the Communist movement. / Arts, Faculty of / Anthropology, Department of / Graduate

The Treatment of Nature in Thomas Hardy's Six Major NovelsSpann, Marjorie Williams 01 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine Thomas Hardy's treatment of nature in his major works. His interpretation of nature was sharply divergent from the traditional viewpoint regarding the natural world, and it was the direct antithesis of those interpretations of nature made by the writers who had preceded him.

Ronald Stevenson's Passacaglia on DSCH: Understanding the Composer's Unique Approach to Large-Scaled Structure, a Lecture Recital, together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of L.V. Beethoven, J. Brahms, F. Liszt, F. Mendelssohn, B. Bartók and OthersBeckman, Bradley 08 1900 (has links)
This paper investigates Ronald Stevenson's unique treatment of large-scaled structure in his Passacaglia on D S C H. This piece's unusual eighty-minute length, use of traditional forms and unusual piano techniques, musical references to other cultures and a massive triple-fugue over a ground bass will be examined as they relate to its overall form. The elements of rhythm, melody/mode, harmony, counterpoint, piano techniques, and tonality are also used as means of highlighting many unifying elements of the piece which contribute to its overall cohesiveness. Tributes to other composers, among them Dimitry Shostakovich to whom the piece is dedicated, are discussed in addition to many references to world cultures and events which support Stevenson's views on what he terms world music. Rarely is a piece written that encompasses such a wide range of musical elements that possess the ability to engage an audience for an uninterrupted length of eighty-minutes. As of yet, an in-depth scholarly investigation of Stevenson's treatment of formal unity in this landmark piano work has not been done. This analysis reveals Stevenson's approach to composing in such a large form, as well as illustrating his mastery of variation, counterpoint and unending ingenuity for innovative piano techniques. The composer's background and philosophies are discussed as well as the major impact made on his compositional style by both Percy Grainger and Ferruccio Busoni.
