Eduardo Mendozas Ceferino series : spanish crime fiction and the carnivalesque

Trotman, Tiffany Gagliardi, n/a January 2007 (has links)
In the wake of Francisco Francos long dictatorship, various new forms of literature emerged in Spain. A new period of transformation, the so-called Spanish Transition, fostered an environment of experimentation and innovation free from the restrictive barriers of Francos regime. The Transition proved a period of great hopes and expectations as well as disillusionment and disappointment. This time, above all, provided an opportunity to reflect critically on the history and experience of the nation in the 20th century. Eduardo Mendoza is one among a generation of writers that experienced the early years of the Transition, the subsequent emergence of the Socialist Party and the reintroduction of Spain to Europe and, indeed, the rest of the world post 1975. This noted Catalan is one of several distinguished writers working within a new genre, the Spanish novela negra, or crime novel. In particular, he has written three novels El misterio de la cripta embrujada (1979), El laberinto de las aceitunas (1982) and La aventura del tocador de senoras (2001); each featuring an unlikely detective known as Ceferino. In this thesis, I examine Eduardo Mendozas three crime novels as a carnivalesque discourse. The work relies on the theory outlined by Mikhail Bakhtin in two of his foundational texts, Problems of Dostoevskys Poetics (1929) and Rabelais World (1940). In 1929, Bakhtin sketched out the idea of "carnivalization" as the transposition of the spirit of carnival into art. It was not until his thesis (now known as Rabelais World) was published in 1960 however that his vision of carnival was understood and the link between the carnivalized text and popular culture emerged. This research focuses on Bakhtins four 'categories of carnival': free and familiar contact, eccentricity, carnivalistic mesalliances, and profanation, in order to develop a critical framework by which a text may be defined as carnivalesque. Through a comprehensive examination of what each of these categories entails, Bakhtins paradigm is linked to Eduardo Mendozas crime trilogy and these texts are consequently defined as undeniably carnivalesque. The conclusion of the thesis suggests several possibilities as to why Eduardo Mendoza, as a contemporary Spanish crime fiction writer, employs a carnivalesque discourse to depict post-Franco culture. The Transition and the decade between 1982 and 1992 are defined as periods of rupture from the official order. These years are considered an ideal environment for the unleashing of a carnivalesque ambiance in Spain that inherently effected the aesthetic production of the period, and specifically the works of Eduardo Mendoza.

Medeiros, Rosângela Fachel de January 2002 (has links)
Making use of Itamar Even-Zohar’s theory of the literary polysystem, the psychoanalytical ideas expressed by Sigmund Freud and Erich Fromm, as well as point of view expressed by theorists such as Roland Barthes, Christian Metz, and Julia Kristeva, and the leaders of the Italian Futurist movement, among others, this thesis has as its basic aim to analyse two works: Crash, a novel by J. G. Ballard, and Crash, the film by David Cronenberg. The intention here is not to oppose them. On the contrary, in many cases they are to be considered as if they were parts of the same work, each one contributing to expand the other. Concerning the film, special attention is paid to the way Cronenberg takes hold of the authorship of Crash and how the movie breaks through the limits of the cinematographic polysystem. The focus of this thesis is centred upon the representation of automobile disasters as well related elements in Crash, novel and film, especially their reproduction, as well as the accident regarded as a means to commit suicide, and the consequences upon the human body caused by the violence of such events. In order to expand this analysis, the presence of the automobile accident in other forms of artistic expression is examined, a fact which will lead to a dialogue between each one of them and Crash.

Los Usos de la Memoria en “La Ciudad de los Prodigios” de Eduardo Mendoza y “La Hija del Caníbal” de Rosa Montero

González Moreno, Sarita January 2007 (has links)

Umění koloraturního sopránu / Art of coloratura Soprano

Dolejší, Anna January 2012 (has links)
The theme of " Art of coloratura soprano" I chose because it is closely related to program of my graduation concert, which included arias from the field altogether. In the first part of my work I try to clarify the meaning and usefulness of technical resources associared with coloratura technigue for lyric sopranos. Another part deals with the history and distribution of the roles within this fields. In the part I present elected representatives Edita Gruberova, Jana Jonášová and Maria Tauberova, which are very significant contributions on the field in the coloratura soprano, and clarify individual positive contribution of these singers to my person. I map the developmental stage of these three singers, I deal with theoretical studies of their repertoire at any given stage, and I evaluate it. I try to use audio recordings to master some technical means of expression of an individual performers, to embrace it and then to implement to my own interpretation of the arias ( Carolina - The Two Widows, Bedrich Smetana, Gilda - Rigoletto, Giuseppe Verdi, Lucia di Lammermoor, Gaetano Donizetti).

The present investigation presented the, from the analysis of the Magazine Sur, directed by Victoria Ocampo and regularly published in Buenos Aires from 1931 to 1970, an overview of the debates and tensions among the established literary elite, linked to liberal tradition, and the new social configuration that projects in Argentina since the 1940s with the emergence of Peronism. Through reflection on the publication, circulation and transmissions of texts published in Sur, one intends to measure the impact of the insertion of “mass-man” in Argentinian politics, and how the legitimate tradition of intellectuals associated with the group of Ocampo was confronted with the new imperatives of modernity, as it happened in Argentina. So, this way, we seek to identify, the historical linkages of posture Sur, from the institutionalization of a very influential elite group in shaping the political and cultural development. From a perspective that falls within the framework of political history, Sur will be analyzed in relation to this tradition. Thus, the magazine appears not only as a source but also in a broader sense, as a methodology for understanding the tensions and dynamics of Argentinian society in relation to the Peronism
