The Undergraduate Teaching of Archetypal Patterns in the Writings of Alice Walker

Linn, Linda S. (Linda Salmon) 05 1900 (has links)
Significant passages in Alice Walker's writings give evidence of archetypal patterns from Carl Jung and feminine archetypal patterns from Annis Pratt. Since a knowledge of archetypal patterns can influence the total understanding of aspects of Walker's writings, a study of these patterns in the undergraduate classroom benefits the student and opens up another system of analyzing writings, particularly writings by African-American women.

The Finnish Cause is Ours : A Case Study of the Evacuation to the Torne River Valley in 1944

Huppunen, Hanna January 2020 (has links)
Research has been done on refugees in general and on Finns during the Second World War specifically. However, there is a lack of research concerning the evacuation of Finns to the Torne River Valley in Sweden in 1944, especially when it comes to experiences of the reception. Previous research on Finns mainly concerns the war children and therefore research lacks the perspective of children who were evacuated along with their families to the Torne River Valley in Sweden. This study therefore aims to map and analyze the experiences among Finns of the reception in the Torne River Valley. The theoretical framework is based on Kohli’s findings regarding the search for safety, the growth of belonging and the will to succeed for children who search for protection in a new country. By conducting eight interviews and analyzing these interviews with the theoretical framework of Kohli, the two research questions were answered. This study shows that the reception was experienced as positive among the Finns that were evacuated. Hence, with the theoretical framework with factors of safety, belonging and success by Kohli, the reception was not understood as fully successful. This study contributes to the literature with new findings and a more clarified understanding of the reception in the Torne River Valley.

Kombinerade vapen i urban miljö

Söderqvist, Joel January 2023 (has links)
The increased probability that future battles will take place in cities can leave military organizations unprepared for future conflicts. Urban warfare requires a different tactical approach than battles in other terrain due to its unique complexity. Previous research on urban warfare tends to agree that combined arms contribute to urban tactical success but lacks on explanations for how it carries into effect inside cities.   This study will examine how combined arms can lead to tactical victory, in a theory-testing approach, by analyzing the U.S assaults on Aachen in 1944 and Fallujah in 2004 during Operation Phantom Fury. Since the Swedish Armed Forces can be considered tactically influenced by Robert Leonhards theory on combined arms, the purpose of this study is to examine the theory’s ability to explain tactical success in urban terrain. The results show that an attacking combined arms force with superior firepower can put the defending enemy in a dilemma. However, the dilemma creates unfavorable conditions for the Alcyoneus principle of the theory to explain why the attacking forces succeeded.

Religion as a factor in the defeat of Alfred E. Smith in the election of 1928

Isetti, Ronald Eugene 01 January 1960 (has links) (PDF)
The growing patriotism of the Catholic population, the Church's vigorous support of the “Social Gospel,” and the accommodation of Catholics to American democratic institutions -- all of these factors helped to make the Church of Rome more acceptable to the majority of Americans. Nonetheless, there was still a considerable amount of latent anti-Catholic feeling in the country, especially in the South. Therefore, when Alfred E. Smith, a Catholic, became the Democratic presidential candidate in 1928, animosity towards the Catholic Church, which hitherto had been submerged, came to the surface during the campaign. Some people, especially Catholics, went so far as to maintain that it was religious prejudice that cost Smith the election. The purpose of this essay will be to determine the veracity or falsity of this interpretation of the cause of Smith’s defeat in the election of 1928, in the hope that a careful representation of the past will enable us to understand the living present and to predict the uncertain future.
