The design and construction of a subcritical nuclear reactor

Schuler, Thomas McKinley, Jr. 15 November 2013 (has links)
A subcritical heterogeneous nuclear reactor was designed and constructed for use in the nuclear engineering program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Natural uranium fuel and reactor grade graphite were used as building materials. Considering that no two samples of moderator have the same characteristics, the resulting parameters measured on this reactor are in good agreement with published data. The reactor performs the primary function as a versatile laboratory instrument that can measure as many reactor parameters as possible. / Master of Science

Flutter of rectangular simply supported panels at high supersonic speeds

Hedgepeth, John Mills 07 November 2012 (has links)
The panel flutter analysis presented herein has been restricted to the problem of an isolated simply supported plate of uniform thickness. The same type of analysis can be applied, however, to other panel configurations. Clamped panels, integrally stiffened panels, arrays of panels, end others should be amenable to treatment by the model approach based on the static aerodynamic approximation. / Master of Science

The shortening of the work week as a component of economic growth

Wolfe, Ernest P. 07 July 2010 (has links)
This thesis, as its title indicates, deals primarily with the economic aspects of shorter hours. The emphasis throughout the thesis is upon economic principles combined with explanatory factual material. With labor issues on the front pages of newspapers, the reader may acquire many miscellaneous scraps of information about labor, but he generally lacks an understanding of the underlying forces that explain the surface facts. If, however, a firm theoretical foundation is developed to which various factual material may be attached in a meaningful manner, not only is the reader less likely to forget the facts but he has a basis for interpreting new data and current affairs. He then is in a position to relate new facts to old ones and to evaluate existing labor policies. / Master of Science

An investigation on the removal of escherichia coli by ion exchange resins

Blair, Thomas Jackson 15 November 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of typical cation and anion exchange resins to remove Escherichia coli from water. The objective was to obtain a method of purifying slightly polluted, private well water supplies. The investigation consisted of passing water samples, inoculated with known concentrations of Escherichia coli, through resin columns of known volumes. The resins were subjected to varying Escherichia coli concentrations and cycles of regeneration. The results indicated the anion exchange resin, Amberlite IRA-400, possessed the highest potential for removing Escherichia coli. / Master of Science

Factors influencing the election of homemaking education in certain high schools of Virginia

Harmon, Vila Evelyn Mayberry 07 November 2012 (has links)
Through the teaching of homemaking education for the past four years the investigator became interested in reasons, especially these reasons given by the girls themselves, as to why some girls elect homemaking education in high school and why others do not. Apparently this question has been of interest to others es e number of studies have been made dealing with this subject. However, no such study has been made in this area of Virginia. The purposes of this study were to determine why girls elected homemaking education and why they did not, the effect of academic requirements on the election or non-election of the course and to determine recommendations which might result in a larger proportion of students electing homemaking courses. / Master of Science

A study to determine the optimum accomplishments for Virginia high school students on certain office machines

Greene, Richard Sherman 07 November 2012 (has links)
There appears to be little difference in student accomplishment on the operations of the different machines regardless of the number of hours of training. There was no significant increase in the number of correct problems from the lâ 5 hour training period to the 16-20 hour training period on many of the machine operations. / Master of Science
