A Comparison of the Hindemith and Schenker Concepts of Tonality

Knod, Grace E., (Grace Edith) 01 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate and compare, through a representative historical sampling of music, the concepts of tonality evolved by Paul Hindemith in his Craft of Musical Composition, Vol. I; and Heinrich Schenker in his Tonwille, MusijNkeael ische Theorien Fantasien, Das jeisterwerk in der Musik, and Per Freie Satz.5 When feasible, these two concepts will be compared with the conventional concept.

A Study of the Fugal Writing of Paul Hindemith

Cody, Robert O. (Robert Oswald), 1928- 08 1900 (has links)
Paul Hindemith's compositions are, for the most part, contrapuntal; and since the construction of such a traditionally contrapuntal medium as the fugue was brought to such a high degree of musical expression in the fugal writing of J. S. Bach, it is the purpose of this thesis to compare Hindemith's fugal style with the standard set by J. S. Bach.

Nature and Human Experience in the Poetry of Robert Frost

Dixon, David C. 08 1900 (has links)
This study seeks to demonstrate that nature provided Frost an objective background against which he could measure the validity of human experience and gain a fuller understanding of it. The experiences examined with reference to the poetry include loneliness, anxiety, sorrow, and hope. Attention is given to the influence of Frost's philosophical skepticism upon his poetry. The study reveals that Frost discovered correspondences between nature and human experience which clarified his perspective of existence. The experiences of loneliness, anxiety, and sorrow were found to relate to Frost's feeling of separation from nature and from the source of existence. The experience of hope was found to relate to Frost's vision of the wholeness and unity of life, a vision which derives from humanity's common source with nature.

Stylistic Analysis of "Banalités" by Francis Poulenc

Allen, Joy Ann 01 1900 (has links)
Because of the nature of the poetry, the interpretation of Banalites in this study has involved certain subjective decisions. These deductions were, nevertheless, colored by statements of the poet, the composer, and authorities on each. This is not to imply, however, that this is the only interpretation. Both poet and composer have given evidence that their creation requires a subjective response on the part of the interpreter. This is perhaps the greatest challenge offered by the work.

A Study of Dissonance and Harmonic Tradition in the Fugues of the Ludus Tonalis by Paul Hindemith

Harvey, Otis Poe 08 1900 (has links)
This study considers only one aspect of music of the twentieth century--that of dissonance. Through an analysis of harmonic tension in the twelve fugues of the "Ludus Tonalis" by Paul Hindemith, a two-fold significance is notable. First, consideration of the broad tendencies of modernism is necessary. second, with Hindemith as a chosen representative of certain aspects of the twentieth century style, the study attempts to show more specifically certain characteristics of the composer himself in the use and treatment of dissonance, one of the more technical features of style in modern music.

Diniz, Carlos Alberto. January 2017 (has links)
C... (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The State of São Paulo had only three public secondary schools until 1930: the Downtown one, Campinas and Ribeirão Preto. From the 1930's onwards, a network expansion process of secondary schools began, which was extraordinarily accentuated after the end of the Vargas dictatorship, with the reestablishment of the Legislative Branch and, consequently, of the action of the state deputies who saw in secondary school a great political opportunity, which brought the increase of the educational establishments to 474 public gymnasiums in different locations of São Paulo between March 14, 1947 and January 31, 1963, in other words, in 04 governments: Adhemar Pereira de Barros; Lucas Nogueira Garcez; Jânio da Silva Quadros; and the Carlos Alberto Alves de Carvalho Pinto's government. From a quantitative point of view, this expansion process started in the 1930's was something impressive and unprecedented until then in the history of Brazilian education, especially by the incisive action of state deputies, once the system of school creation instituted at the end of the decade of 1940 passed by the promulgation of law approved in the Legislative Assembly of the State. In the context of the São Paulo's historiography education, we can affirm that there is a gap to be filled regarding the actions and strategies adopted by the State Executive and Legislative Branches around the network expansion of secondary schools that was established in that period. With the objective of carrying out a s... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Rosales Valencia, Blanca 22 August 2014 (has links)
Communication is a comprehensive process linking people. In the last decade, the Latin American governments have incorporated communication strategies which contribute to the achievement of political objectives related to governance and social inclusion issues. This document talks about the communication experience undertaken by the General Office of Social Communication of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, in the first two years of the Ollanta Humala administration, and the interaction mechanisms among the State, the media and the civil society based on the use of social inclusion concept in communications, considering the social dynamics and the information technologies. To that end, the document addresses the main problems presented in the State’s communication management, which will result in the proposal of a Communication Policy for Social Inclusion, as a first step to configure the strategic communication activities in the public management of democratic governments. The communication policy reveals a link between one concept of government management and one of communication management; a fact that enables the relevance of democratic values in the political exercise and contributes to civic development. / Tesis

"Each one of us goes through life inside a bottle" : a reading of Brave new world in the light of Zygmunt Bauman's theory

Casagrande, Eduardo Vignatti January 2016 (has links)
The present thesis proposes a reading of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932) in the light of Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of Liquid Modernity. The plot of the novel unfolds in the futuristic London of the 26th century, in the year 2540 of our Common Era, or – in the narrative – in the year 632 AF (After Ford). Underlying the dystopian scenario of technological advancement and highly developed organization, however, the themes discussed in the novel actually address the circumstances of the time and place of its own production, the beginning of the 1930’s, in a context of developing industrialization, political tension, and economic crises. In this research, I pursue the answer to the following question: “In what ways does Huxley’s fiction anticipate the kind of society its readers would be living in at our present time, three quarters of a century after its publication?” With the help of Professor Zygmunt Bauman’s theories, I build my interpretation of the metaphors found in the novel, that prognosticate the current conditions of free-market capitalism, consumerism, programmed obsolescence, that determine the ethics, the aesthetics and the ways of thinking of our present times. Bauman’s assumptions concern the liquidity of the contemporary world, where nothing is meant to last long. This premise generates a number of consequences such as overconsumption, frail human bonds, superficial critical thought, and supremacy of online over factual contacts among people. The thesis is devised in three chapters. In the first, I contextualize the concept of dystopia. In the second, I bring the necessary contextualization about the time, the work and the author. In the third, I introduce Bauman’s concepts of solid modernity and liquid modernity and connect them with the study of Brave New World. Finally. In Chapter IV, I present my reading of the novel. At the end of the research, I expect to find the answers to the posed question by establishing critical interrelations between the fictional aspects of the novel and the social features ongoing in our present time.

Oblitas Jordán, Raura Raquel 12 November 2018 (has links)
Tesis
