Os esforços do presente estudo concentraram-se em compreender as transformações trazidas pelos Jogos Mundiais Universitários ocorridos no ano de 1963 - Universíade de 1963 -, ao associativismo esportivo da cidade de Porto Alegre. Espera-se, com esta pesquisa, trazer mais uma contribuição sobre a relevância dos Jogos Mundiais Universitários para Porto Alegre, elegendo para tal, como foco de análise, as modificações ocorridas na estrutura e no funcionamento dos clubes que sediaram as competições esportivas. Desse modo, aproximar-nos da realidade gerada por tais mudanças significou, nos limites deste estudo, uma incursão sobre as representações que daquelas ocuparam-se em sustentar, fontes impressas de diversas naturezas, a saber: Revista do Globo, Jornal Correio do Povo, livros comemorativos dos clubes esportivos, obras especializadas, boletins, monografias e dissertações. No mesmo passo, este trabalho mobilizou a utilização de um grande acervo de fontes iconográficas que, com seus contornos, operaram igualmente aos textos, como elementos criadores ou reforçadores de representações. Assim sendo, privilegiando a utilização de fontes de diversas naturezas, bem como tecendo essa movimentação no enfoque que transcorre do macro ao micro, ressaltando o segundo ao primeiro, assumimos características teórico-metodológicas que alocam nosso estudo nas dimensões da História Cultural. Evidenciou-se que após a realização da Universíade de 1963, há indícios que não houve continuidade em algumas ações desencadeadas em razão do evento. Esse quadro de abandonos se intensifica quando direcionamos o olhar à elaboração de políticas públicas para a difusão das práticas esportivas na cidade. / The efforts of the present study had been concentrated in understanding the transformations brought from University World-wide Games occurred on the 1963 year, the Universíade of 1963, for the sporting scene of Porto Alegre, city headquarters of the event. One expects, with this research, to bring plus contribution about University World-wide Games relevance to Porto Alegre, choosing for such, as focus of analysis, the occured modifications in the structure and the functioning of the main sporting clubs of the time. Representations of Satan in the Narnia chronicles by C.S. Lewis

M.A. / Although a serious Christian apologist and academic writer, Clive Staples Lewis was also well known (and loved) for his fictional works. Lewis was of the opinion that one's faith and chosen profession cannot be separated and he thus aligned the two in his own writing (Schultz and West 1998: 120). Therefore, his writings reflect his Christian faith (after his conversion in 1931) and, although his Ransom (Cosmic) Trilogy (1938, 1943 and 1945), mythological work Till We Have Faces (1956) and The Chronicles of Narnia (1950-1956) are not openly theological, they all deal with figurative representations of both Christ and the Biblical devil. Many studies have explored Lewis's portrayal of Biblical truths in his fictional writing. As Christopher Mitchell pointed out in his essay entitled "Bearing the Weight of Glory," a few months before his death, Lewis stated that he was writing in order to bring about an encounter between the reader and Christ (Mills 1998: 5). While on the surface these novels are not emphatically about the battle between heaven and hell, underlying the stories is a broader message of rivalry between good and evil. A student of Lewis's, Harry Blamires, remembers Lewis saying that he went about the task of writing The Chronicles of Narnia much as he did the writing of his serious theological work, Mere Christianity (Mills 1998: 15). Much research has thus been conducted to explore Lewis's portrayal of God in his fiction, yet there has been very little research on his metaphysical perspective on Satan. His fictional novels — most notably The Chronicles of Namia — are largely allegorical and often subtly allude to the devil through the characters. It is this subtle allusion to evil, and specifically characteristics of the Biblical Satan in The Chronicles, that I would like to explore in this dissertation.

Notre projet a pour but de mettre en lumière les sources documentaires de Dialogues des Carmélites, la deuxième œuvre lyrique de Francis Poulenc (1899-1963). Le parcours vers la version « ultime » de cette œuvre fut si compliqué que le compositeur a laissé de nombreux documents à examiner. De plus, Poulenc a effectué plusieurs fois la révision de la musique, surtout pour la création milanaise de janvier 1957, mais aussi pour la création parisienne en juin de la même année. Dialogues des Carmélites est une œuvre dont les « versions définitives » ont été souvent rejetées par le compositeur lui-même. Nos analyses sont organisées autour des deux grands axes suivants : l’un est les recherches et les analyses des sources documentaires, l’autre est l’analyse de la musique à travers des partitions manuscrites et imprimées. Dans le premier chapitre, nous abordons l’aspect chronologique documentaire du sujet en montrant les sources intéressantes touchant notre compositeur. De nombreuses sources et leurs particularités, notamment les partitions et les listes de remaniement que nous traitons dans cette étude nous ont permis de cerner la chronologie de la composition de cet opéra. Dans le deuxième chapitre, nous examinons l’écriture musicale du compositeur et sa progression dans l’œuvre. Le dernier chapitre concerne principalement la réception de l’œuvre. Les critiques de la presse nous montrent la réaction internationale et française aux créations de l’œuvre, qui est accueillie par de nombreux spectateurs aujourd’hui encore dans le monde entier. / Our project intends to bring to light the documentary sources for Dialogues des Carmélites, Francis Poulenc’s second opera. The road to the « definitive » version of this work was so complicated that the composer’s documents left to analyse are numerous. Furthermore, Poulenc himself often reviewed the music, particularly for the January 1957 Milanese creation, as well as for the June 1957 Parisian creation. Indeed, Dialogues des Carmélites is a work whose « definitive versions » have often been rejected by their composer. Our analyses are organised around two main axes: one pertains the researches and analyses of the documentary sources, the other concerns the study of the music through the handwritten and printed scores. In the first chapter, we tackle the chronological documentary aspect of the topic, showing the interesting sources concerning the composer. The abundance of these sources and their peculiarities, with particular reference to the scores and the reworking lists, will allow us to define the compositional chronology of this opera. In the second chapter, we examine the composer’s musical notation and its progression in Dialogues des Carmélites. Finally, the last chapter focuse mainly on the reception of the audiences. Press reviews will illustrate the international and French reactions to the various creations of the opera, a work still widely praised all over the world.

Colonial policies and the failure of Somali secessionism in the Northern frontier district of Kenya colony, c.1890-1968

This thesis examines the events that took plac,e. in the Northern Frontier District I North Eastern Province of Kenya hetween the late nineteenth century and 1968. After 1900 the imposition of colonial policies impacted on the socio-economic and political structures of the Somali people. This thesis also examines the nature of Somali resistance l\P- to the late 1920s when Somali society was finally pacified. It further examines colonial policies such as the creation of the Somali-Galla line in 1919, the separation of the J uhaland region from the Kenya Colony in 1926 and the Special District Ordinance of 1934. Between 1946 and 1948 the British Government through its Foreign Minister, Ernest Bevin, attempted to unify Somali territories in the Horn of Africa and this raised Somali hopes of uni fication. The Bevin Plan collapsed because of the opposition of the United States, the Soviet Union, the French and Ethiopian leaders. Similar hopes of NFD Somali unification were raised hetween 1958 and 1963 because of the unification of the former British Somali land and Italian Somaliland. Due to the imminent end of British colonial rule in Kenya, the NFD Somali leaders demanded secession from Kenya to join up with the nascent Somali republic. But the NFDSomali hopes of unification with the Somali Repuhlic were dashed by 1964 because of the same opposition provided by the United States, the French and the Ethiopians. The British Government were all along half-hearted towards Somali unification attempts even though the field administrators adopted a pro-Somali attitude to the issue. In the early 1960s, however, the NFD Somali leaders were faced with the additional opposition of the new KANU government in Kenya. In 1964 the failure of the NFD Somalis to secede from Kenya led to the guerrilla war, what the Kenyan government called the 'shifta movement', that engulfed the North Eastern Region until 1968 when the Arusha Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Kenyan and the Somali Governments. The signing of the Arusha Memorandum of Understanding by the Kenyan and Somali Governments did not satisfy· the NFD Somalis hopes of joining the Somali Republic. The main conclusion of this thesis is that the N FD Somalis, except for few collahorators, did at no time, whether in the colonial or post-colonial eras, accept heing in Kenya. By the late 1960s the prospects of NFD Somalis unifying with the Somali Republic were, in view of the forces arrayed against the Somali secessionist movement, slim; and they have remained slim since then.

Les œuvres d’Ook Chung mettent de l’avant pour la plupart un univers sombre, où l’humanité est dépeinte de manière grinçante. Son roman L’expérience interdite n’y fait pas exception, mais son regard se tourne ici plus particulièrement vers la littérature. Au sein d’une littérature contemporaine qui cherche sans cesse à se définir elle-même, il propose une mise en scène des tensions et des questionnements propres à cette littérature. Toutefois, si le roman offre à priori une métaphore cynique de l’industrie littéraire, ce mémoire entend montrer, par la mise au jour d’indices textuels, qu’une lecture ironique est également possible et qu’elle vient considérablement modifier la signification qu’il est possible de tirer de l’histoire racontée. L’étude a également pour objectif de montrer que l’ironie de L’expérience interdite, par l’ambivalence qui résulte de la révocabilité, lui permet d’exprimer simultanément des points de vue divergents et donc de formuler une réflexion à deux volets.

O ‘Livro da Professora’ foi elaborado numa época de intensos debates políticos e educacionais e expressa uma contradição entre o governador coronel Virgílio Távora, interessado em um plano de governo de modernização conservadora para o Estado do Ceará, e seus elaboradores do projeto educacional, influenciados por práticas de educação popular inspiradas na pedagogia freireana, em Piaget e no solidarismo cristão. O golpe de 1964 abortou o ‘Livro da Professora’ e seus elaboradores foram perseguidos, enquanto teve início a elaboração de um projeto educacional baseado na Ideologia da Segurança Nacional e do desenvolvimento. No Ceará, somente no governo de César Cals, foi elaborado um novo currículo sob a influência da Educação Moral e Cívica e dos Estudos Sociais impostos pela Lei 5692/71 e das festividades de comemoração do Sesquicentenário da Independência. Apesar das imposições curriculares e das festas e rituais cívicos realizados, dentro e fora das escolas, a cultura escolar constantemente conflitava com o imposto.
