Ferland, Pierre-Paul 17 April 2018 (has links)

The function of simile in Remarque's "Im Westen nichts Neues"

De Leeuw, Howard January 1989 (has links)
Erich Maria Remarque's use of simile in Im Westen nichts Neues contributes greatly to the depth of the narrative and dispels the notion that this anti-war novel is nothing more than a simple soldier's account of the First World War. Definitions of simile and metaphor have existed since Aristotle. This study, however, treats simile as the literary equal of metaphor. Simile can be an even more powerful literary device than metaphor when cleverly and properly used. Remarque purposefully chose his more than 150 similes, many containing animal or nature images. Nearly all are used to show vividly and honestly war's reality while at the same time dismissing war's glory as a lie. Remarque also employs simile for antithesis. Seen through the perspective of the author, Remarque, and the narrator, Paul Baumer, the many similes represent the development Baumer undergoes up until the story's tragic end.

Government intervention in the Malaysian economy, 1970-1990: lessons for South Africa.

Simpson, Ralph Arthur January 2005 (has links)
This study examined the role the Malaysian government played in developing the Malaysian economy as a means to eliminating poverty and inequality and explored the lessons South Africa can learn from Malaysia's development experience. Under British colonial rule Malaysia developed a divided multi-ethnic society characterised by gross inequality and high levels of poverty. Jolted by the 1969 race riots and in a major departure from the laissez-faire economic policy, the government embarked on the New Economic Policy in 1970. This ambitious twenty-year social engineering plan ushered in greater state intervention in the economy. It greatly reduced poverty among indigenous Malays and made substantial progress towards achieving inter-ethnic economic parity.

'All That Man Has and Is' : a Study of the Historiographical Concerns Guiding the Work of Christopher Dawson

Greydanus, Richard 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis presents the historiographical concerns guiding the work of Christopher Dawson, Roman Catholic historian, sociologist, and philosopher of history, in terms of a science of human being, which is adequate to conceptualize human activity in time. The author attempts to show that Dawson rejects the modern, empirical paradigm, both for its secularity and its reconceptualization of the relation between time and human activity in history. A conceptual continuity Dawson sees between the work of modern empirical thinkers G.W.F. Hegel, Karl Marx, and Friedrich Nietzsche, and its consequences for understanding history as a teleological process, or the progress of Reason, consciousness, Spirit, self-overcoming, etc., is treated in the first section. Dawson's account of the natural conditions of human knowing, and its relation to his theory of culture, is treated in the second section. And in the final section, Dawson's understanding of the relation between religion and culture is presented.

Låginkomsttagaren : Skärningspunkter expertis, politik, representation omkring 1970

Smedberg, Carl-Filip January 2016 (has links)
Klassifikationen användes första gången under tidigt 1960-tal.

Sandberg, Camilla January 2016 (has links)
The 1960s was the stage for a global changes and the uprising of social movements. The world changed it´s form when the older generation was approach was set against the younger generation. The memories of the 1960s and 1970s are still present like a shadow in the Swedish society and in our culture. This period had the whole world on it´s toes and it took years before the political and civil unrest settled. This study is an examination of the tv-serie Upp till Kamp (2007) and the film Tillsammans (2000), where the principal purpose is to examine and compare their representation of the use of history. The first part is looking at how both of the mediums are reconstructing the Swedish national narrative of the 1970s. And the second part is trying to put the films into a context by illustrating the contradicting attributes of how their societies are portrayed in these two films. These contradictions are based on four themes that is found in both of the movies; gender, generation, class and social movements. The conclusion of the study shows that the two films are creating two different pictures of the 1970s Swedish society. Upp till Kamp are reconstructing the most common perspective in Swedish history; the male perspective. Where as Tillsammans illustrate the women’s everyday life and the social struggle, and it even shows the children’s perspective. The comparison between how the two films use the four different themes was helpful in highlighting what type of narrative the two filmmakers chose for their view of the 1970s in Sweden, and what they chose to leave out. Which leads to a discussion about how film as a medium is a great tool for mediating history, but also due to the constant reproduction of the same type of narratives. And this shows why films that reconstruct history needs to be questioned, because other important narratives might be left out.

The Treatment of the Heroines in Representative Novels of François Mauriac

Hendry, Linda Ruth 05 1900 (has links)
This study analyzes specific scenes in the novels dealt with in order to determine the type of women characters Mauriac has created. This study covers Mauriac's early, middle, and late periods as a novelist. The heroines are nearly all examined in relation to each other chronologically. The study shows that Mauriac first portrays a religious and simple heroine. The heroines become agnostic, if not atheistic in several of the subsequent novels. Through Therese, they become progressively more psychologically complex. They then become less complicated and, except for the last heroine, are religious. The last heroine is psychologically portrayed but is the least original of the heroines. The examination of Mauriac's women characters seems to show that the author is deeply sympathetic with the majority of them.
