The Eight Preludes for Piano of Frank Martin, a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of J.S. Bach, L.v. Beethoven, J. Brahms, F. Chopin, I. Albéniz, R. Schumann, A. Scriabin, F. Liszt, and K. SzymanowskiCollins, Geraldine T. 05 1900 (has links)
Frank Martin, while assimilating many of the features of serial technique, found other of its features incompatible to his temperament. The Eight Preludes for Piano mark a point of decision regarding these features. While rejecting the twelve-tone row, he extracted prime cells from the octatonic scale and subjected them to the serial approach. One of these cells, G-flat - F - A - A-flat, evokes the B-A-C-H motive. In view of Martin's admiration for Bach, this similarity is probably not accidental. In any event, this four-note motive permeates the preludes and binds them into a coherent and unified set. Along with some evidence of partial form in the preludes, the concept of continuous variation is the compelling force molding the overall form. Martin disdained atonality on personal and artistic premises. Despite their contemporary textural qualities, the listener perceives c-sharp as a tonal center for the set. Tempo, rhythm, and texture contrasts and complementation between the preludes reveal an obviously preplanned format for the fulfillment of set unity. The consummate knowledge of pianism demonstrated in the preludes places them as a major contribution to twentieth-century piano literature.

Three-dimensional finite-element analysis including elastic-plastic material responseHatt, Fritz January 1974 (has links)
The development of a linear finite-element program using an isoparametric 60-DOF hexahedron is presented. As a special feature dictated by programming considerations, the enforcement of boundary conditions and the modification of the stiffness matrix due to a rotated coordinate system for selected nodal points is carried out on the element level. Numerical integration is performed with the aid of a 14-point integration rule.
The nonlinear program is capable of modelling elastic-plastic material behavior. It is based on the constant stiffness iteration employing the initial stress concept.
The iterative procedure is accelerated by a new scheme termed uniform acceleration.
Three practical applications are presented. The thick-walled cylinder under internal pressure and the transversely loaded thin plate on simple supports are analyzed under the assumption of ideal plasticity. Comparisons with existing solutions are also made. For the third example, an aluminum-epoxy fiber composite is subjected to a uniform temperature difference. Both materials are characterized by strain hardening. The effect of a free surface perpendicular to the fiber direction is shown. / Doctor of Philosophy

Rockbridge Alum Springs: a history of the spa: 1790-1974Atkins, Charlotte Lou January 1974 (has links)
This history of the Rockbridge Alum Springs near Lexington, Virginia, covers the entire development of the spa from 1790 through its rapid growth and popularity in the nineteenth century, its final death in 1919, its restoration in the 1940's, and its present state in the 1970's.
The Cult of the Spa was an important social element in the South during the nineteenth century, and the Springs of Virginia served the nation with their various health-giving waters and their social opportunities. Rockbridge Alum Springs developed from a small, one-hotel enterprise, into a sprawling establishment with two major hotels, several smaller hotels and numerous cabins, serving at its height almost 1,000 people. In the 1850's, and again in the 1880's, it was second in popularity only to the White Sulphur Springs, however, its fame has generally long been forgotten. The effects of the Civil War, the death of the Age of Belledom and the coming of the automobile so changed southern society that, along with ninety percent of the spas, the Rockbridge Alum Springs met its death after the turn of the century. The Alum, however, was partially restored in 1940 as the owners hoped to turn it into a wild life refuge and a retreat for scientists. Although its nature had changed, the Alum has been fortunate enough to survive, while many other watering places have long since been absorbed into the earth. / Master of Arts

Anglo-Spanish relations during the early years of Elizabeth I, 1558-1574Hunt, Walter Kevin 10 June 2012 (has links)
By 1574 trade had been restored between England and Spain and normal diplomatic relations reinstituted. But the political relationship between the two countries was not the same in 1574 as it had been at Elizabeth's accession. In fifteen years a transition in English foreign policy had occurred. English rather than Spanish interests were dominant in the aims and objectives of Elizabeth's policies. By 1574 she was firmly established in England and clearly capable of handling foreign affairs In regard to Spain, she fully understood the implications of Philip's hesitancy to take any action against her. By overestimating the potential threat from France, Philip failed to recognize the change in Elizabeth and her foreign policy. Much to his later regret, all the Spanish ambassadors to England, with the exception of de Silva, sent so much false information to him that it was almost impossible to comprehend the political atmosphere in England. One area of Anglo- Spanish relations that was continually exaggerated were the affairs of the English Catholics. The resident ambassadors were deeply involved in Catholic intrigues and gave falsified reports of discontent towards Elizabeth. (See document for rest of conclusion.) / Master of Arts

Vigilance and skin conductance characteristics in a population of reading disabled childrenMitchell, Zita Annette January 1974 (has links)
Dyslexic children are probably not a homogeneous group in terms of important characteristics assumed to be involved in reading; disability since underlying causes may vary widely. Such characteristics as arousal and performance on a vigilance task would differ not only from a control group, but also within the RD sample. It was hypothesized that HBD symptoms would be associated with lowered arousal and poorer vigilance performance whereas children experiencing reading difficulties presumably because of specific language dysfunction would resemble controls in arousal and performance. The results supported vigilance predictions for omissions, but not commissions. Poorer performance was associated with HBD symptoms. Age, however, proved to have an even greater effect on vigilance performance. Arousal results, for the most part, were not in the predicted direction. Arousal, measured by skin conductance, increased over time for children in this sample, rather than decreased as we expected from adult data. This indicated that vigilance and arousal cannot be equated in the same sense that has been suggested for adults. / Master of Science

A statistical analysis of a Haitian Mothercraft CenterCengel, Karla VanMeter January 1974 (has links)
Mothercraft, or Nutritional Rehabilitation, Centers have been instituted throughout the Third World, in order to alleviate malnutrition in preschool populations. Analysis of Centers, however, is complicated by problems with evaluative methods. There is controversy over the best measure of a child's nutritional status, while confusion has also arisen from the use of static methods for dynamic data. And this author noted that maintenance of any certain Percent Standard Weight (PSW) is often wrongly interpreted as a 100 Percent Standard Weight Gain.
From 1964 through 1969, when the Center in Fond Parisien was operating, agricultural improvement programs were also being conducted there. Improvements seen in the nutritional survey could not, therefore, be credited to any single program. The community child health survey indicated that the health of the preschool children who never attended the Center worsened during this period. But both surveys were subject to sampling bias, and no clear conclusions could be drawn.
Fond Parisien Center data indicated initial age and PSW as statistically significant influences on the percentage points a child gained in his PSW (percent gain). Regression equations based on these two variables were found to predict the percent gain after three and four months in the Center. Indications from this data are that most children do not profit in their percent gain from a fourth month in the Center. Follow-up data was inconclusive. Comparisons between non-Center and Center children indicated no long-term benefits of the Center. Detailed long-range study of a few Centers is needed. / Master of Science
