A psychoanalytic study of Buñuel’s cinema

Park, Mi Soo 05 1900 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to attempt a semiotic- psychoanalytic reading of the cinema of Bunuel. For this proposal we have selected three films of the director, An Andalusian dog, Land without bread and The obscure object of desire. The criteria that has led to this particular selection of films takes into account a wide range of variables to be contrasted to the psychoanalytical determinants that, we propose, play a decisive role in the form and content of the productions. The different variables present in these films are: genre (Surrealist, documentary and traditional narratives), thematics (surrealistic, erotic and socio-etnographic study), time of creativity (early adulthood, senility) and socio-cultural conditions of production (Spain, France). Our intended psychoanalytic study focuses on the creator's unconscious motivations that regulate, in a rather compulsive way, the poetics of love or life indistinctively present in all these cinematic creations. In order to reach to this interpretative stance, we will follow the different methodological steps of a semiotic reading of the texts that will discern their cinematographically denotative and connotative devises and contents. This way of illuminating art through psychoanalysis is reflected on the Freudian idea that creativity constitutes one of the mysterious human manifestations in which the instincts channel their conflicts in a socially disguised way, in order to pursue the desired gratification. / Arts, Faculty of / French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of / Graduate

The Stabat Mater of Herbert Howells: The Agony and the Ecstasy

Childs, Kim J. 08 1900 (has links)
Herbert Howells composed three large works for chorus and orchestra: a requiem (Hymnus Paradisi), Latin mass (Missa Sabrinensis) and finally a Stabat Mater. Writings, performances and recordings of the Stabat Mater, however, have been few. As the Stabat Mater is believed to be the culmination of his musical prowess, it is important to bring this major work to light. Chapter 1 begins with a brief introduction to Herbert Howells, then continues as a brief biographical sketch. Howells's life is discussed from birth, as organ scholar, student at the Royal College of Music, his teaching professorship at the same institution, and important compositions by decade until his death. Chapter 2 is an overview of the Hymnus Paradisi and Missa Sabrinensis. The chapter gives historical information on each work, including reasons for commission, dates of composition and performance, orchestration and choral composition, type of soloists, conductor and recordings. Chapter 3 is an in depth study of the Stabat Mater. The chapter includes reasons for the genesis of the work, current and past events that affected the composition, musical influences, and the death of his son Michael Kendrick Howells. A second section to this chapter addresses the text of the Stabat Mater, including the history of the poem, liturgical use from the 11th century to the present, the rhythmic scheme of the poem, and variant stanzas used in the Howells's setting. Chapter 4 is a thorough musical analysis of the Stabat Mater. After a short introduction explaining the architecture of the work as a whole, each of seven movements is examined, including the introduction, main themes, musical elements and use of Latin text. A concluding final chapter restates the importance of Herbert Howells as a composer in the British musical renaissance of the 20th century, in addition to a supposition that this final large orchestral/choral work be considered the culmination of his life's work.

Abstract: Not informed. / Doutorado / Doutor em Ciências

Experimental analysis of critical void ratio concept in artificially cemented sands

Reyes, Gilberto S. January 1983 (has links)
This report presents the results of analyzing the critical void ratio concept on weakly cemented sand. The study consists of drained triaxial compression tests performed on artificially cemented sands created to simulate the natural behavior. In order to carry out this study, loose samples were prepared and subjected to different confining pressures such that failure at volumetric contraction could be obtained. The triaxial test results showed that the samples exhibited similar response to drained loading as compared to previous investigations on the static behavior of naturally and artificially cemented sands. Following the empirical method of determining the critical void ratio by plotting volumetric strain at failure against void ratio after consolidation, interpolation of the data points yielded critical void ratios of 0.735, 0.722, 0.703 and 0.668 for confining pressures of 60, 70, 80 and 95, respectively. A comparative analysis was made by plotting instantaneous void ratio during the loading against axial strain and this yielded values of 0.745, 0.735, 0.715 and 0.685 for confining pressures of 60, 70, 80 and 95 respectively. However, this method depends on the test accuracies at strain levels beyond 20% where the specimen becomes severely distorted, thus, making this method unreliable to use. Utilizing the result from volumetric strain-void ratio curves, the relationship between volumetric strain at failure and confining pressure was plotted and yielded critical confining pressures of 125, 94, 78, 67 and 60 psi for void ratios after consolidation of 0.66, 0.68, 0.70, 0.72 and 0.74, respectively. From the above results, the critical state line, which shows the variation of the critical void ratio, ecrit with the magnitude of the cr1 critical confining pressure, σ₃crit, was defined for the artificially prepared samples with one percent cement. It would be interesting to compare this result with the critical state line of uncemented samples and of samples with higher amounts of cementation. The critical state concept is very important in evaluating the undrained strength of sands from drained tests data. The reader is referred to reference 7 since this is beyond the scope of this investigation. This concept is also an important study used in determining the liquefaction potential of sands. A paper by Castro [2] reported that liquefaction can only occur in sands that are looser than the critical state. The results of consolidated-undrained static tests will indicate whether the sand is looser or denser than the critical void ratio for the appropriate confining pressure, and thus whether the sand is susceptible to liquefaction. The reliability of the parameters obtained depends on a very limited number of data points. The author suggests that more tests on a wic!er range of relative density and confining pressure should be conducted to obtain more data points where a more accurate interpolation or extrapolation could be done. However, the results presented in this report are hoped to provide useful information for further studies to be made on the analysis of critical void ratio concept in cemented sands. / Master of Engineering

An examination of two algorithms for digital image registration

Cyran, Edward Joseph January 1983 (has links)
Two digital image registration algorithms are tested and evaluated on a personal computer system. The two algorithms, correlation and sequential similarity detection, are tested and evaluated for speed of execution, accuracy, and optimum parameter determination. The programs are written in BASIC and can be easily converted to FORTRAN or other high-level language. Three different polynomial functions are tested and evaluated to improve the resolution of the correlation determination. Based on the results of the tests, it was concluded that the testing of registration algorithms is feasible in small computer systems and that sequential similarity detection is faster. An optimum threshold setting can be determined for an individual image. Increasing the magnitude of the SSDA threshold parameter increases the execution time of the SSDA program. Also, the resolution of the correlation can be improved with a curve fitting technique. / Master of Engineering
